Wenger's Thin Squad Chicken Comes Home to Roost

Not nicked it

That Wenger's Arsenal has remained unbeaten by its North London rival for 11 years is a remarkable achievement, and the loss of that record will not herald a shift of power in North London. All records have to end sometime, but the demise of this one was not a complete accident.

Wenger has pushed his luck with a squad that is too thin for several years, and that squad is inadequate in key places. For example just imagine if Spurs had played with a keeper of Almunia's standard. The main difference between the two teams, if you ignore Arsenals overwhelming possession, was between the keepers. Gomes saved three great shots by RvP, Almunia weakly punched out a corner kick that gifted Rose his goal.

Going in at 1-0 down was bad enough, but coming out after half time and conceding after only a minute made it mission impossible. This time it was the woefully inadequate Silvestre who chose to run the wrong way leaving Spurs an open goal.

Thin Squad

This brings us back full circle to the issue of the squad being too thin. Of course it is true that any club missing players the quality of Fabregas, Song, Ramsey, Arshavin, Gallas and Vermaelen and RvP might have problems. But it's the quality of the players who play on the day that count.

Started season with no real cover for CB

Wenger was prepared to start the season with only one recognised stand in for centre back, Silvestre, enough said. True he signed Campbell at Xmas, and Sol was brilliant last night, but a manager can't depend on 70 years of CBs to replace Gallas and Vermaelen. Just imagine if Gallas and Vermaelen had been injured in February.

The second area of weakness that Wenger failed to address, for whatever reason, was that the goals dried up after RvP's injury. At one stage pundits were talking about a 100 goal Arsenal, that ended with Robin's injury; since then Arsenal have increasingly struggled to score. It was clear by Xmas that Arsenal had a goal scoring problem, but Wenger insisted that Eduardo, Walcott and Bendtner would manage, unfortunately not.

It was only the fact that Fabregas became the leading goal scorer that kept the wagon rolling. With his injury Arsenal's championship hopes went out the window. Unfortunately Nasri is yet to understand the role that Fabregas plays, he holds the ball too long, and drifts wide when he shouldn't. Rosicky has also failed to impress himself on games.

One Bright Spot

Bendtner has done quite well, and the encouraging sign is that he and RvP can play together. However, Nik's return to form was too late to make the key difference. It is also unfair to expect him to score all the time. The team's shape is better with him, but he needs another goal scorer in the team, plus he is not immune to further injury. Thus the one bright spot is not just RvP's 20 minute cameo, and his ability to switch the game, but the fact that he and Nik played well together.

Wenger's Method

Wenger has often been proved right about players, Song and Diaby are far better than most fans thought, but he is wrong about Almunia, and wrong that Arsenal didn't need another striker at Xmas. He was also wrong that Arsenal were not inadequate in the CB department. He always insists on having a squad that is too thin. Maybe the board do not give him enough money, but whatever the reason the squad does not have enough depth and that has been the case for the last 5 years. The squad always runs out of steam before the prizes are awarded.

None of this mattered very much whilst RvP and Fabregas were playing, the cracks were papered over. It certainly didn't matter when Gallas and Vermaelen were fit, but weak replacements for quality players does matter when you visit the local "Europa cup would be's" down the road.

Not all doom and gloom

It's not true that Spurs outplayed Arsenal, they had to park the bus at home to grind out this result. They got away with it because as Wenger said Arsenal were inefficient in the last third of the field. Until RvP came on there was a lack of guile in front of goal. With RvP on the field for such a short time Arsenal created the majority of their chances, what would have happened had he played for 90 minutes? Wenger bemoaned the immaturity of the team; I assume he included Almunia and Silvestre in that.

It will only take the purchase of two or three players to strengthen the squad. It's not a larger squad that is required, but a squad with more quality in one or two key areas. Clearly the team need a quality keeper, Almunia will be an ok second choice. The centre backs will need cover, hopefully Djourou will return and Silvestre will go. If Gallas stays then one quality replacement will do. If Ramsey recovers then the midfield should be ok, but it is possible that Eduardo and Walcott will not make the grade so the arrival of a new striker will be welcome.

The league has gone now, Chelsea only need six points and it will be beyond Arsenal's reach, but the Gunners will be in the real European competition, unlike Spurs. That's something that the pundits, at the start of the season, told us would not happen.

I not only agree with virtually all the article but have posted most of the points over the season.
I would add two points, firstly who gives the pre match talk,I ask because we rarely come out looking motivated or "up for it" and are often slow to pick up the tempo.
Secondly, and this is an old chestnut,do we have a defensive coach and if so who and why has he not been sacked and replaced with someone who can actually organise the defence, its not that difficult.
On that note I have a further point do we have a GK coach because he needs the Spanish archer also.
We have far exceeded my expectatios this season and well done for that, but we could have won this title, and its a regret that was worth trying to avoid.

Boro and Pat are both defenders.
Ive wondered about that team talk - does Wenger really say "now I want you to @#$%& about for the first 15 minutes and give away a cheap goal". if he does they are following him to the letter

The squad is not thin, its injury ravaged. There is a very real difference.

Good read Padre pretty much somes up what happened last night and the reasons for it.

However I cant but feel a certain sense of deja vu, your article could have been written this time last year and still be relevent. whichs beg the question will these problems be addressed?

Iam remember a certain shareholders Q&A last year where Wenger had to face some uncomfortable questions about his policies and player selection most notably the "geriatric" Silvestre. It would be interesting to see whether or not the forum is open this year and what the responses would be.

Wenger said at the start of this season that his young team will finally be able to be judged for what they really are, so with our season practically over it think its fair now to ask the questions and have them reasonalbe answered.

Very well summarized Padre. Just wanted to add few observation:

See thin squad, not enough quality 2nd choice players are definitely major points any one should see but I would say the problem goes a bit further. We need to look into last two years team and judge some of these points:

Song was marely a 2nd choice player last season and Denilson was 1st choice, Song has improved on his performance Denilson is almost the same as last season. So 2nd choice improvement happend in this position.

Fabregas is much better player from last season and Nasri, Ramsey, Diaby all has improved so 2nd choice improved in this area too.
Almunia was 1st choice and Fabiansky 2nd, here clear detoriation of quality.
Gallas & Toure was two CBs and Djourou was available most of the last season and Silvestre was the cover. Vermaelen has adequately replaced Toure and interms of Gallas injury it's same both years so it's same, only difference Djourou is absent this year Sol has done more than enough what Djourou could do or did last year, so no difference this year interms of defensive strength.

RVP was fit last season with Adebayor, Bendtner and Arshavin after January last season. This season Adebayor was sold, more than half of the season RVP disappeared, Bendtner and Arshavin injured off and on, Eduardo and Vela simply didn't make it upto the mark. A clear cut weakness in strike power. So it shows in the goal drought.
This way we could see that why we might do a little bit better interms of overall points and positions compared to last season.
But what it clearly shows even by average rule of law even we had a lesser injury list wouldn't make us the title winner in any of these seasons.

This shows up a point, clearly lack of champion's quality.
We play passing, possession football so does Barca, it's easier to stop us scoring the goals by parking the bus it will require much tougher defensive ability even to park a bus to stop Barca from scoring. The point is we are not the best in business when we have a known style of football and can be stopped from our intended achievement.

We don't have a plan B in our style of football and can't park a bus even if we want to do so.

So if there is any real intention is there from Wenger or club to win any major trophies clear improvement in overall team quality needs to be addressed immidiately. This has to come from both ways as you said by strengthening the team by adding few quality players and strengthening the clearly visible weak areas with trainings and tactics.

I completely agree with this article, Padre. It seems five years of coming up short haven't thought Wenger anything. He still continues to maintain his belief that somehow a team lacking dept will win trophies. We have a decent first 11, but given the fact that injuries are inevitable, plus we have a history of being ravaged by injuries... Wenger should have sought to bring in proper backup players.

We can see that he has little confidence in Silvestre, especially in several games when we elected to play Song at CB, rather that bring on Silvestre. He knew Silvestre wasn't good enough... so why did continue to stick with him as a backup?

As for our midfield. I always thought we had sufficient players to cover there, but now I'm beginning to doubt that, as whenever Arshavin and Fabregas are injured, we struggle to create chances. I really thought Nasri could step-in with the absence of either of those two, but apparently not. He's not very consistent it seems.

As for additional signing for next season. We Definitely need a goal keeper. If we had a proper goal keeper, we could have had more points, or even leading the table today. Since Djourou is coming back, we should only need one backup cb. However, if Gallas leaves, we should sign two cbs.

We need a backup DM too. Denilson doesn't appear to be suited in that role. I noticed when he plays, the opposition primarily attack down the middle, as oppose to when Song plays. I don't even know what role is best suited for him TBH. All I know... he's not a natural DM.

Since it seems we are getting that French league striker, we probably won't need to sign a striker.

So it's possible we may need 3 or 4 new players. Most like 3, but 4 if Gallas decides to move on.

We may need three players and I think Wenger will sign three players, or more.

I agree with most comments, and they add to the general analysis. I think it highlights what I have argued that this weakness of squad has become a method, its not just a one off.
The method almost certainly flows from the boards wish to save money. Creating a policy of dogmatic attachment to youth prospects, rather than mixing it.

True Wenger's squad was ravaged by injuries this season, but Man U and Chelsea have also had substantial injuries. Its not the width of the squad we are questioning. Someone once said of the Eagles they were a mile wide, but only an inch deep. That would probably be unfair to say that of Arsene's squad but it does have some pertinence.

If the squad had avoided injuries to the spine of the team Fab, RvP and Gallas we might have won the league. But you would have to very lucky for that to happen. Therefore you must have top players to cover that spine. They dont exist in the squad. Add the fact we have two poor keepers it is probably the case that five players are required off season, and one or two weaker ones should go.

on your report Padre I only see one fault in it, how does Sagna not playing offside like the rest of the back four for Bale's goal turn out to be Silvestre's fault, and if anyone ran the wrong way it was Clichy who was the one marking Bale, and was only feet from Bale only seconds before the goal, but Campbell, Silvestre and Clichy all stepped up but for some reason Sagna ran the wrong way and played Bale onside,
I know Silvestre is no ones favourite but to falsely put the blame on him is not what I have come to expect in your normally excellent reports and as I said this report is otherwise well written and up to its usual high standard

Padre Pio
16/04/2010 00:26
Yes the offside was cocked up, but you have to cover for your team mates and you play to the Whistle. silvestre was closest to Bale, but turned too far away from him, if he had turned towards him he miht have got there on time

clichy was the one in the build up to the goal that was marking Bale and was right next to him before he stepped up to play offside, but its easier to blame Silvestre, just like in Barcelona, when he blocked a pass and it fell to Messi who then scored a stunner it was all Silvestre fault, but when Vermaelen blocks a pass and it falls to Messie to score the very next goal it was not his fault at all, only Silvestre can be blamed
