Saka and Partey MotM Ratings v Villa

By Gunnersingh

A vital win that would have hurt the other top 4 contenders as they'd have expected us to drop points.  The celebrations at the end showed how big it was.     Next up Palace in  2 week's tomorrow, which will be another tough game.    Now we have to pray none of our players get injured in the interlull!

Leno 8 - Speaks volumes for his character that he done so well.  Was commanding and made a good save at the end.  Can't think of to many better number 2's.

Cedric 7 - Worried that his lack of pace might get exposed but he defended well and seems to link well with Saka.

White 8 - Good again.  One great header at the end to beat Mings in air showed he's improved in that area.

Gabriel 8 - Solid again.  Enjoys defending.

Tireney 7 - Better but still not the player he was.  Not offering anything going forward and leave opposition too much space.

Partey 9 - I thought he was superb.  Good passes.  strong and dominant.  Best player on the pitch for me. MOTM

Xhaka 8 - Made a few vital interceptions and helped us control the game.  His experience is very important.

Saka 9 - Had Young on toast.  A defenders nightmare as he can drift inside and also go in the outside.  Done well to keep his shot low for his goal.

Odegaard 7 - Not at his beat but still setup a few chances.  Worked hard as usual.

Smith Rowe 8 - Had a very good game and helped us control the game as he come inside a lot.  Should have done better with a chance in the first half.

Laca 6 - Disappointing.  Didn't hold the ball well and should have passed to Odegaard in the 2nd half.

SUBS
Pepe 3 - Dreadful and could have costed us at the end.

Nketiah 4- Poor as well.  Couldn't keep the ball.

Holding N/A

Good marks.

Thought Tierney did well.
Odegaard was pretty average again.
Lacazette Worked hard again and should have passed to Odegaard.

A good performance and vital 3 points going into the international break.
At least some will get a break.

Lacazette looked like an ageing striker who had played 3 games in 6 days.

I also thought Tierney was good but Partey was the star of the show. His fitness is pivotal to this teams success.

Agree with the subs, Pepe was awful and Nketiah didnโ€™t look like he was trying,

There's 4 or 5 players in that squad yesterday who will hopefully not be next season.
I'm including Lacazette in that 4 or 5.
OK with him stopping as squad player for less money.

Generally, agree with GS scores. I was screaming at Laca when he didn't pass to the open Odegaard. I think he was desperate to score as he has been criticised for that. Everyone has been saying his assists and contributions have been great but a striker is judged on the goals he scores. Still, he should not put himself over the team's needs.

Nketiah looked disinterested when he came on. Think he's gone.

In our case this season Lacazette the striker is not judged on the goals.
We no he isn't a top class striker and will need replacing.

His involvement in the team is what he is there for.
Experience etc.

^He's also had to adapt from being the no.9 fox in the box to having to hold the ball up to bring our creative players into the game. He's now playing a more Firminho false 9 and hasn't done badly in that regard as it's a sacrifice for the good of the team.

Whatever fans think of Laca one thing is certain, if he gets injured we are royally screwed unless we change tactic because Martinelli can't play that role and Nketiah is f.ucking terrible.

Absolutely agree Booty, if Lacca was younger he might have picked up a few more goals from his new position, but he is very important to the team overall. One problem, and he has always had it with us, is he cant last the full 90 because he has to put so much into what he is doing
