Wenger winning Friends – don’t believe press hacks

At the moment much of the press has presented Arsene Wenger as a man besieged, with little support from fans after he attacked the "integrity" of the FA.

As part of the general press witch hunt against Wenger the Guardian launched a poll asking, "should Wenger be banned for calling a linesman a liar". The poll did not put up any facts, and the Guardian offered little from Wenger’s point of view after the fizzy cup debacle.

However the Guardian readership didn’t rise to the bait, a massive 68% supported Wenger. Blimey they can’t even kick a man when he is down properly.

On March 9th, on the day the Grauniad printed carried a front-page story on the resignation of Patrick Mercer from the Tory frontbench over his comments on race (Report, March 9), they printed the racist ramblings of a Michael Greenwood commenting that he was so pleased that Arsenal Football Club's "foreign chancers" playing on English "soil" had been dumped out of the CL.

Yet another chance to kick a man when he is down (the famous English fair play). However the letters editor was not counting on the reaction from Grauniad readers, and today the paper printed letters from all over Britain supporting Arsenal. Not many clubs become the centre of debate in the quality press.
