Arsenal Make Best Signing Of The Summer

By Shane

Forget about Willian, and Gabriel, and whoever this Iceland goalkeeper is. Hell, even forget about Thomas Partey or Houssem Aouar. Forget about everyone. We've just made the best signing we could possibly make this summer.

Back in the day, we all used to give Wenger a bit of stick for blurting out the 'like a new signing' gem but I don't think even the harshest of Wenger critic would bat an eyelid if he said it about Aubameyang, because he is.

Arsenal's social media team even teased the announcement like it was a new signing.

There were egg timer emojis which, in this day and age, is as conclusive as it gets that big news is en route, and the club's Twitter admin even changed our bio to something like: "If you're reading this, switch on notifications."

Everybody knew we were announcing Aubameyang and I genuinely believe that had we unveiled Partey or Aouar, you would've found quite a lot of tweets asking about Aubameyang in the responses.

That right there tells you about who the priority is.

We all know how important this geezer is to Arsenal and that's why it's such a bigger deal than a new signing.

Competitively, he has 72 goals in 111 appearances - AND he hit the 50-goal mark quicker than - ahem - Thierry Henry.

Even when we lost 3-2 to Aston Villa a couple of weeks ago, he still scored both goals.

At 31, he's absolutely going to slow down. He will gradually lose some of the explosive pace that makes him so comparable to Henry, but it won't be detrimental to his game.

How many of his 72 Arsenal goals can you remember? Eight? Ten? Fifteen? The reality is that most of his goals aren't very memorable (Controversial Ed).

For every one he curls home from distance, there's a dozen more scored tapped, scuffed or headed in from within the six-yard box, the sort of unflattering, unmemorable goals that will persist even when speed desserts him.

Even without his speed, Aubameyang is going to eat, sleep and breathe goals and we just couldn't have signed a better player.

He's under a new contract, but it'll be the same Aubameyang for the next three years

That indeed is the key. He has been playing in a disjointed setup for most of his time here and he hasn't had the throughballs or one on one opportunities as much as a great midfield would supply, but he has still managed up score those unglamorous goals, several of them.

It is only towards the end of the last season and now that we are seeing some spectacular efforts, because we are able to get him isolated one on one with the defenders/keepers.

I feel the best of Aubameyang is yet to come and it will be seen in the coming season and half a season after.

Too bad fans aren't allowed in right now, but this season is going to yield some of the best goals we would have seen from an arsenal striker since RVP left.

I also don't think we'll see a repeat of the Ozil situation, big contract, not even bothered much on the pitch any more. Auba plays for Gabon and he will want to play for them for as long as he can, so his performances will be the best they can be, becasue he is a true professional. When Ozil retired from the German team, with a big contract, he had no need to impress anyone any more.

Interesting, I think he scores so many goals where he's in the right place at the right time because he is so fast and because of his ability to do lots and lots of sprints per game. If he loses some of that speed and stamina, the number of chances he will get will surely reduce.

Yes, Arteta has 3 years to rebuilt Arsenal around Aubameyang now.

"The idea is to be more unpredictable every year and be more difficult for the opponents to stop and nullify what we want to do. Thatโ€™s what we have now, especially at the back and in the midfield the options we have, to open up the spaces, we have many more options than we had last year.โ€ Mikel Arteta

I think he doesn't really year his pace as much and it's generally in cruise mode.
Also what Shane is referring to are some goals from corners, set pieces and random plays where he just gambles in defenders making the mistake and plods home.. There are several of those under emery.

Yeah basically he can hurt a lot of teams in a lot of different ways in my opinion. I don't think we'd have committed to paying him almost ยฃ40 million in wages over the next three years if anybody at the club thought losing a yard or two of pace would cripple him as a goalscorer.

I had a dream. Aubameyang scored a goal. Long diagonal from way out on the left touchline. Some other chap (not offside of course) knocked it back. Some other chap got a touch and JFC there was Aubameyang who'd been making his run before play had moved from the touchline... Henry-ing past a couple of defenders and... you know the rest.

Good Goal.
