Be Honest What Did You Think of Today's Performance?

By Celine Dion
November 17 2012

I'm not interested in the opinions of the looney brigade, but those who really think about the game. What did you think about Arsenal's performance today? Maybe because I wasnt at the game, where I would undoubtedly got carried away by the drink/atmosphere, but I found the performance totally bewildering. If I was AVB, which I am not, I would get rid of Adebayor straight away, the blokes unhinged, and completely untrustworthy if they ever want to make anything of themselves in big games.

Prior to his sending off, they were absolutely walking around us. I have never seen two or three attacking players break through 2 or 3 in a group beyond our full back at the SAME TIME, like they did just before Adebayors goal. We were TERRIBLE! You have all took the p*ss out of Billy's post(See Forum),  but he wasnt far off, before the sending off.

So after the sending off, I thought we were still pretty bad, except for the 10 minutes where we got the goals. The only thing we had going for us, was that they were worse. Instead of digging in, they were all over the place. They seemed to think they could still attack us and win, even with 10 men. This is AVBs failing, and I dont think he will be there very long.

In the second half, I was expecting an onslaught, but how many attacks did we manage? Two or 3 really. It could have been one of the most memorable results in decades but in the end we won looking at our watches. In fact, after their goal, they could have scored again, through Lennon, which would have been absurd given our 1 man advantage.

So many of our players, disappear for 10 or 15 minutes at a time. Everybodys been raving about Cazorla, and he is very decent in one off situations, and I thought his run for Girouds goal, and then his own goal were superb individual moments. Hovever, does he impose himself on games for 90 minutes? He certainly does not. Podolski is completely absent from proceedings for 30 minutes at a time. I quite like Giroud, but he's a bit similar really, doesnt impose himself on the game, but is good for a goal suddenly like he was for our third, he certainly has a finishing instinct, I have to hand it to him. I dont exactly like him as a player, but he does suddenly land a goal.

Meanwhile our defence is all over the shop. So much for Steve Bould, they still dont hold a straight line, and still p*ss about and get all confused when people like Bale run at them.

Overall, I found our performance rather unconvincing, whatever anyone says and whatever the scoreline. But is it necessarily Wengers fault, or the clubs fault, when you look at the league overall, with WBA in 4th place. I do wonder whether the standard of the premier league is dropping. Since our game we have seen Chelsea get undone by WBA and United by Norwich. Maybe the days of Nasri Fabregas etc absolutely RUNNING the opposition RAGGED for 90 minutes were a one off and what we see now is more what we should have expected all along.

I'm not even really knocking the team, they did well individually, but it just isnt the type of football I am used to seeing. Still, better than losing.

i wld say neither team controlled the game but we finished off our chances well.... they were hampered by the sending off... and after the restart, we looked quite ragged and 5pud2 dominated for 25-30 mins even tho Santi scored during that time

my view on the game is that we were good when we had the ball but poor when we hadn't, always looked like we could score, but at same time looked like we could give up a goal at the other end, we had ample chances and positions to have hit them for 8,9 even 10 goals today, but wrong choice of passes, selfish play or downright sloppy passes meant we turned over the ball.

Our defence seems to be playing two seperate styles of defending at the same time, some playing offside and some marking, and in that regard we also have players, especially Per, just running out trying to play offside when the easier and right decision would be to deal with the damn ball and mark the damn opponent. Alot more work needed on the training pitch.
And on the same note we really lack speed in CM, they just don't get back quick enough to help out the defence in open play, the number of times too that Bale was allowed just run and run without our midfield putting in a challenge was just not good enough.

Our attack is good, but due to pod not really being a left wide player we have become a right sided team, which actually does not suit Giroud that much, except on high crosses, we need to have same options on left as Walcott and Sagna gives us on the right, maybe if Gibbs gets fit it will help alot

Spurs started abit better, but the game wasnt really settled when they scored. Arsenal immediately stepped into the game and was beginning to take it to them when ade felt the pressure and got the red. From then on it was always arsenal. There was no way a midfield of sandro and huddlestone was going to be a match for wilshere-cazorla-and arteta.
Giroud is the best leading striker in the league behind rvp in my opinion. His presence is felt and he's always a constant threat. Podolski seem to always know how to score or provide an assist while doing his defensive duties. Overall, the team needs time to play the type of football arsenal fans has been used to under arsene wenger. The players have quality and character, and there is a good depth in the squad. It was a comfortable win out there today, and it would appear desperately sad for any moaner to try to put a gloom to it.

We won and it's made my weekend for once.

Don't think we was convincing and Spurs were the better team until Buyouts dismissal.
How it would have finished with him still on we will never know.
Personally I think we would have struggled with being one goal down.

Even the Arsenal fans seem worried on TV when Bale got the 2nd.
Anyone who thinks everything is fine after this win is just kidding themselves.

We are just as likely to play the QPR's of the league and bloody loose next.

Work still in progress I'm afraid.

This.

The way we played when it was down to 10 men is how we used to play all the time. Something is not gelling and while I was ecstatic with the result today, I could just as easily see us falling back out of favor next week.

If this gives us new confidence, then I will gladly look back on this game with much more joy, but I still see some glaring issues that are going to have us struggling for 4th place at this rate.

"work in progress" is exactly the term to use.

Fulop helped us into 3rd spot.

Last season, 10 points behind and 0-2 down at half-time, our season transformed after that 5-2 win with Tiny Totts imploded.

Let's hope this is the catalyst that will transform our season with 6 or more consecutive wins on the trot.

Self-belief, self-confidence and with forward line scoring regularly, let's hope it is not a false dawn and the TEAM had crossed the Rubicon.

A convincing win against Montpellier will only reinforce the confidence flowing in the TEAM now.

This...

Our MIDFIELD is nowhere imposing and controlled any of the games played so far.

There are too much of over-playing and passes between DEFENCE and MIDFIELD that slowed down the game and allowed our opponent to regain their shape is the reason why we find it so hard to scored against 11-men team like Sunderland, Stoke and Norwich.

That breakaway goal scored by Cazorla with 5 passes from Szczesny to Walcott to Poldolski who squared the ball to Cazorla against an exhausted DEFENCE shown what was missing, and is still missing, from our game.

Arteta and Ramsey simply slowed down our attack with no vision and playmaking ability like Song and Fabregas. Poldolski is no Nasri or Arshavin that injected pace down left side.

That is what Wenger meant when he said he missed Diaby...and also Rosicky.

Both players are always driving froward and passing forward.

Let's hope Wenger will buy Felliani to repalce both Arteta and Diaby (plus Ramsey) as WIlshere-Cazorla-Felliani will give us balance in MIDFIELD, a blending of "Silk and Steel".

I cna only pray that both DIaby and Rosicky will be ready to start playing before X'mas Weekend Crunch.

You can't ask for anymore than to score five against them. According to the scoreline we demolished them and that's what'll stick out in the history books in years to come, not the performance.

I don't neccesarily buy into the idea that Adebayor cost them the game. I think his dismissal came far too early in the day to draw that conclusion but at the same time I'm quite pleased he emerged from the game looking like the unprofessional, repulsive c*nt we know him to be, and maybe Tottenham fans are thinking the same.

This 'artical' may have been put up "for discussion", but that doesn't change the fact that's it's a mean hearted piece of drival. We've been through a wobble and a half, we need to regroup, the team needs to consolidate it's confidance. There were certainly areas that need improvement but there were many positives, as other posters have pointed out

This game could have seriously put us in a real crisis. It didn't. Instead we won it 5.2. isn't that a result? Isn't that a real reason to be cheerful? but re-read Celine's 'artical'. Although Jack puts in his own obnoxious way, he is absolutly right.

And for a piece of drivel, loads of people underneath agree with me. All i am trying to point out, and not in any artcile or it would be a lot better written, is that for a 5-2 result, it was actually very disjointed, which is unusual in football, i think.

I didn't see the game. I was getting regular updates from PK and some Spurs mates.

PK felt we were dodgy at 4:2 and unable to control Bale. The Tottenham boys felt they were on top until the sending off. After seeing MOTD I would agree with that.

The scoreline reflects a trouncing but the flow of the match may not reflect that. Celine's questions are relevant.

And before anyone questions celine's joy at the result check his tweets. Why can't you be happy with the result and then discuss how we got there?

seanski
18/11/2012 08:29
It's no surprise that 'loads' of people agree with yer mate given the terminal misery that sometimes pervades this forum. But gotta tell yer, there were many gooners who felt pretty good last nite, doing the spuds has that effect. And quite a few who feel the pluses were the stuff of a feal shot in the arm for the team, which it dearly needed.

celine dion
18/11/2012 08:40
Well im obviously not going to disagree with you there. The team needed a boost and it got one. Check twitter as well though, there is a fairly wide consensus that all was not quite right in terms of the inner functionings of the team. It doesnt seem to have that driving force from midfield. Until Adebayor was sent off, we had only been in their box once or maybe twice. Does that not strike you as rather odd? For an Arsenal team at home?? One thing the team does seem to do though, is score when it gets its chances. Its become more EFFICIENT in this regard, it can no longer be accused of trying to walk the ball in. I also think it is very promising that we have started to use high crosses as part of our ordinary game. This brings us a dimension we have not seen for years. But is this a team going places? No, not unless the dynamic of the midfield is drasticsally altered towards the more athletic/physical.

Every word spot on. Said it before this Article was up saying it now.

This is a Sh*t Arsenal team, Rosicky and Diaby should walk straight into it if Wenger had any sense.

we were severely under pressure when they had 11 and they scored and looked like getting more, after the goal we still looked lost, Adebayor didn't need to make the challenge he made and will be an asset to them if AVB gets control like Mancini does with Ballotelli.

they still got back into the game with 10 and pressurized, ENJOY this victory, because it's not getting any better.

This is a new team celine and co. Giroud, podolski, arteta, cazorla, and wilshere had never played together in their enitire life untill the last couple of games. And every week they're up against teams that had been playing together for a very long time. Check the spurs front six yesterday, the newest person in there was adebayor who had been with them for over a year. Yet we demolished them completely in our own way.
Ofcourse we are not at the level we can be, and even when we get there, we would still be short of the type of performance expected from a titile winning team like manciteh because we are abit short in creative players. But even now, compared to the best teams in europe in terms of play, we're very close.
With the constant changes to wengers team, people forget how such changes wouldve affected us in terms of play were it not for the genius qualities of arsene wenger in making his team able to play and entertain. Most other managers wouldve been struggling in the relegation zone by now with the same number of changes to their teams.
I expect this arsenal team to improve with every game. Diaby and rosicky will make us play better, not because they are really better than the players available now, but because they possess the qualities neccesary to play the arsenal way, which in a way justifies our continous faith in them.

Keep dreaming De Times, what more gelling do you need? We got too many players passing to death out there no one that wants to travel with the ball, no one wants to get in the opponents box from midfield.

I wasn't Song's biggest fan but even I could see his direct ball over the top to a player. Not the routine wing ball.
Diaby is good at getting in both boxes and pressing.
Rosicky would travel with the ball to the wings and cross.

Our team now have probably completed the more passes than any previous team, because the football has become pass the parcel.

The saving grace was they defend as badly as us,we created more than we have been lately, players coing back are making a big difference if we can get Gibbs back that will help.
Im very happy to win any game but this is nice to savour.
That said I do not see this squad pulling up any trees and they are just as likely to lose to in the CL this week,no Im not fooled by one result however enjoyable.

I wasn't overly convinced with our display, but on the back of the last 2 games I expected us to be nervy.
In the early play Spuds dominated but after the goal we were definately coming back and I expected a see saw type game with lots of goals.
after the sending off I was glad to see for once we actually took the game to them and ignored the usual Wenger call for patient football.
The result was a show of how frail spuds have become under AVB, look at it logically they played 5 accross the middle which explains the early dominance, having lost a striker nothing should have changed save maybe less shots at our goal, 10 men and 1 up no need to change the formation they should have held out for an hour at least if not all game.
at 4-2 I could still see us blowing it, thats how far my confidence has become shot in recent games, lets hope this will turn a corner for us.
On present personnel the defence is good but need to have a proper left back. Midfield is some what weak, they dont link well with the defence, I think we need a decent sweeper a player who can provide a screen, drop behind when needed and know instinctively when to make the extra man in attack, these players are few and far between these days and our older players who should have been able to possibly graduate to sucha role (K.Toure, Flam maybe an older Cesc) all left the club, of those left Djorou lacks the concentration necessary and the reading of the game, I hope eventually Kos could do it, Because we sure as hell wouldn't be able to buy it in the way we do transfer deals.

In the end I watched the match on SKY in the evening, I started a thread just before the game in which I stated that I couldn't bare to watch and I didn't and so when I heard the result I assumed that my pessimism had undone me again, but not so.

We were getting played off of the park until Adebayor was deservedly sent off, I know many of you will claim that this incident didn't change the game but that is just being silly and if he hadn't have been sent off we wouldn't have scored five goals and they would have scored more than two.

We went through periods of controlling the game after the event but we didn't dominate them by any measure and for a team with only ten men they created far too many chances to score which thankfully they couldn't capitalise on, luckily.
In the end we deserved to win but a victory is only glorious when the opposition is at least matched, I am happy that we won but I can't be delighted because I saw nothing to suggest any improvement in the unit, we were shaky throughout the game and played most of it with an advantage and if I learnt anything from the game it was that even with ten men other teams can still pull our defense from pillar to post and that we really need to replace Song in January with M'vila.

We weren't looking too brilliant when it was 11 on 11 but on the whole I'm getting a bit tired of hearing "but oh we would've got battered if Adebayor hadn't been sent off".

We WERE getting battered last year, 0-2 down and going nowhere. On the whole our form was worse then compared to the last few weeks. We turned it around and blitzed them 5-2, they didn't go down to ten men.

You never know in football, they have bottled pretty much every big game over the past 2 decades, especially against us.

Having said that we did look a bit dodgy right after 4-2, and Bale should've made it 4-3. We won't win anything as long as we're so mentally weak that we feel under pressure against ten men despite being 2 goals up. Still massively flawed but Spurs are much more so, thankfully.

Even with ten men, we scored against manu. Even with ten men chelski won at barca. Teams do turn around games with even less than ten men. At the level of football we play, losing a man shouldnt be an excuse for conceeding five goals. Many other teams become harder to beat when they go a man down. So all you moaners, what exactly are you on about?

Utd controlled the entire game and it took a one off piece of magic from Cazorla in the last minute to make the score look respectable even if the performance wasn't, whereas Spurs always looked like they could score and we did not dominate them so that example is flawed. Chelsea beat Barca with 10 men but that will never happen again and they were lucky throughout the game and should have lost.

Spurs looked like they might make a game of it throughout the match even with 10 men, last year we beat them 11 vs 11 5-2 but this year we are so short on quality that we struggled against 10 men at home and that is the point.

The problem seanski is that we have been telling ourselves that for oh three or four years now, haven't we?

I too saw a number of the positives you saw, particularly going forward but given the negativges I saw defensively and particularly in the center of the park I cannot be as optimistic as you.

The way this club has been run since 2005 we have always been that player or two short and as much because of our willingness to sell our better players as our reluctance to invest more in signing better players.

I said years ago that this team would constantly be in perpetual transition where we were always close but never got any closer really and I think this team at best will prove that contention remains valid,
