Arsenal's First Away Defeat This Season Three Wins Out Of 8
Off to Africa
By Boris Mellor
October 21 2012
Arsenal were very poor offensively – that’s not angry Arsenal fans speaking but Arsene Wenger. He refused to blame Mannone for the conceded goal, but he was prepared to blame his attack. I can find no mention of mental strength, or the handbrake, in his post-match comments, but he did admit Norwich were more up for it than Arsenal.
I have often said after Arsenal have played at home after the post international break that if the match had been away the Gunners would have lost. So really this should have come as no surprise, but Norwich have been so poor this season, languishing in the bottom three, I very foolishly predicted an Arsenal win.
But the signs were there from the very start as the Gunners played as if they had treacle in their boots (thanks to Ballistix for that one), they never upped the tempo until it was far too late.
Most players had an extremely poor game, only Arteta and Cazorla kept battling away, but any chances they created were wasted on the dullard forward line. Gervinho looked like a poor man’s Adebayor, Giroud tried to prove that Chamakh is not the most shot shy player at the club since Hleb, and Podolski, as for Podolski where was he? At least we can look forward to Gervinho going off to Africa soon.
Even Wenger refused to hide behind statistics, Arsenal had seven shots on target compared to the Canaries three, but stats mean little here, not one of the shots really tested the keeper.
There is no point in discussing the match any further, Norwich deserved their win, and could have won 2-0, Arsenal wouldn’t have scored even if given 30 minutes extra time. More important than the match, is what does the result tell us about Arsenal’s chances of winning anything this season?
Knee Jerk or Analysis
My view from the beginning of this season was that this team would not be good enough to reach great heights, that it would be a typical Wenger post invincible season. That means probably top-four and no silverware; it doesn’t mean relegation or doom, the straw argument often put forward by the more sycophantic Arsenal fan unaware the club existed before Monsieur Hulot arrived.
This defeat has prodcued screams of rage from quarters least expected; those claiming this was it at last have been pulled up short by the fact that Arsenal now have only three wins out of eight and are in 9th place. They are however 3 points better off than last season. It is better to judge after 10 games, but one thing Norwich did spotlight is the weakness of Wenger’s squad after a few injuries.
Wenger was reduced to putting Mertesacker up front as Arshavin and Gnabry were unable to provide the finishing touch, as his three most forward players struggled to make any impact.
We will have to wait and see if this is a blip or not, after all Arsenal were in a far worse position this time last year, but superhuman form saw the team rise to finish 3rd place.
However, that amazing feat depended on two players, one I am not allowed to mention, the other Arteta. Without Arteta the team only managed to win one game and that was thanks to a goal keeper, unfortunately not one of ours, who seem incapable of being the reason for winning any game. On the positive side a rapid Wilshere return could change things, but over dependence on him probably led to his last lengthy injury spell.
The other player, now departed, scored important goal after goal, on departure he was denounced as a one season player. The problem presented to Arsenal is can Podolski and Giroud make up for his loss? Could they have one great season? Because it will be needed. It’s a big question and a lot depends on the answer. The other question that will be answered this season is can you win anything without a world class keeper? Brian Clough thought not, on his arrival at Nottingham he bought Peter Shilton and went on to win two European Cups in a row.
Whenever Arsenal have won anything I would argue it was with a great keeper between the sticks. For the invincibles it was Lehmann, for Wenger’s two Doubles it was Seaman, for the first Double it was Wilson. Anyone who thinks that any of Arsenal’s present keepers are in that class are dreaming, but I am not here to take anyone’s dummy away. We will know the truth in May, if not somewhat earlier.
Szczesny is every bit as good as John Lukic ever was and will end up alot better.
Wenger fails to motivate his players for the lesser teams, another arsenal site showed stats today that in the last four years afc have lost 28 games to what can be called lesser teams, in contrast utd have lost 16, and we all know that if draws were added in we would have an even bigger contrast in points dropped compared to other top four sides
its as if these games v smaller clubs is beneath our players and our manager putting in the effort

You are missing the point, Ed, about the GKers, mate. It`s not about Szcznesy`s potential, it`s about now , mate.
Our keepers lack experience/ maturity and we all know that those assets are about the most important part of being a keeper.
Since the end of WW1, 1919, when the FA restarted its 4 tier football league, with Arsenal fc in the 1st div, thereโs only ever been one club to have never been relegated from Div 1/ EPL.
i'm not missing the point, that is why I said he is as good now as lukic ever was, szczesny is a very good keeper, but some of you act like very good goalies never make mistakes, joe hart is an outstanding keeper yet he still makes mistakes, as does cech, there has never been a goalie who does not make mistakes, peter shilton as pointed out in the article made a big difference to NF, but he made lots of mistakes, I seen the great pat jennings perform wonders for AFC, but he too let in some soft goals, as did Seaman(remember the ecwc final mistake) and lehmann(who cost us in the invincible season in the cl v chelsea), now I point out mistakes for DS and JL in seasons when they were at the peak of their form, and both vastly experienced at the times too, yet any little mistake by WS is jumped upon by many on here

Szcz had a bad last 10 games for Arsenal last season, he had a disastrous Euro, came back after injury made a bloomer that cost Arsenal its no goals concede record, and has been injured ever since.
He might improve in future, but he is potential not proven quality like Seaman or Jennings, which is my point we dont have a top class keeper

Arteta on his team's first away victory at a club above them in the Premiership since September 2015 at Leicester.
he played those last ten games last season injured, needed pain killing injections before each game, and its so funny to see this line about his disaster of a euros, he had one game, got sent off, not good I agree but this disastrous soundbite makes out like he played four or five games and fecked up in them all, one game, got beat to a cross for a goal and got sent off for giving away a penalty, something I'm not sure why he gets such stick about, it was the defence that had dissappeared and left a forward a free run on goal
by the way its bull to say its ok for seaman, big pat and jens to make mistakes cos they were proven, in fact it should be less excusable, after all they are proven, right, so have no excuse for cockups

No need to be so defensive Ed, let`s leave that to the keepers, eh?
I `ll ask you this. In the next game against Schalke 04, as a fan, honestly, who would you be more comfortable with in goal for us, Big Dave or the Big Cheeze and why?
Since the end of WW1, 1919, when the FA restarted its 4 tier football league, with Arsenal fc in the 1st div, thereโs only ever been one club to have never been relegated from Div 1/ EPL.
it depends which dave seaman you are talking about, the one at his prime or the one we had for his final few years, you see weedz I do not claim a dave seaman, or a pat jennings etc in their prime would not be an improvement on Szczesny, as they would be an improvement on any keeper in the league right now, all I'm saying is WS is a good enough keeper, and no matter who the keeper is will not make AW motivate the players better for the norwich's of this league, it won't make us get more players in the opposing area when we attack, it won't make our midfield and attackers shoot more, it won't make us put in a few high crosses for Giroud to attack, Wenger teams in all his 16 years here have had these problems, aw has a way to play and he sticks to it rigidly,
just a thought on the wenger way to play, in those 16 years we have had three players - Henry, Bergkamp and RVP - who have scored over 400 goals between them, how many of them were headers, ten, twenty maybe, that shows its not part of the wenger way to throw in high crosses, to get bodies in the box, and its one of the reasons why we have not won as much as we could have under wenger

I agree with nearly all you say. But isn`t, how you described, the way this club tries to play? Ball on the ground, on the foot and all that? Isn`t this the style that the football world applauds us and teams like Barca for playing? Isn`t this the attitude that has keep us in the top tear of Euro footy? Our results certainly haven`t.
And please don`t play the mediocrity card. If anything, it`s a reality card.
What I disagree with in your above comment is that WS is plenty good enough for the Norwich`s of this league.
I don`t think he`s old enough or good enough to be our #1 keeper, at present, Buddy.
I`m really pleased that he plays for us. I see his potential, Ed. But at 22yrs I don`t feel he`s experienced enough to be our #1.
For me it`s about the age, mate. That top 2 inches. That calm that comes with experience. I would be perfectly happy to have a 28 yr old WS , with exactly the same skills as he has now, being our #1.
There are less skilful keepers out there, who would be better #1s for us at present.
Since the end of WW1, 1919, when the FA restarted its 4 tier football league, with Arsenal fc in the 1st div, thereโs only ever been one club to have never been relegated from Div 1/ EPL.
so you would not have liked to have had joe hart in our team last season last season purely on age alone, iker cassiles(sp) was real madrid first choice from the age of 17,
as for our style of play, there is room for a little deviation in our play, I am in no way calling for us to totally alter it, just improve upon it, a little more variety in our play would surely make it alot harder for teams to play against us, or for them to set up to counter us, it has to be easier to defend a cross if you know its almost certain to be a low cross and of course if you know there will only be one or two attackers in the area, let alone going for the ball, now if we want to play barca football we need two things, 1. a messi type player 2. a much higher work rate from the entire team,

No I wouldn`t Ed. Like the players you`ve mentioned above, potential is the catch-phrase. Someone believed in their ability and were rewarded for that belief. But how many howlers, how many inexperienced decisions were conceded to make that belief justified?
Also I`d suggest that both Man City and Real Madrid are or were in better positions than Arsenal at present, to take the chances on their young keepers, that they took.
I agree with the rest of what you say, my friend. Arsenal are too reliant on Tiki-taki and get the ball to that`one-man`.
The Norwich game was a case in point. I hope that who-ever Arsene buys in Jan, and I do believe he will, they will be senior, experienced players. Watching the likes of Ox and the young German, last weekend shows what I`m saying in the clear light of day.
Since the end of WW1, 1919, when the FA restarted its 4 tier football league, with Arsenal fc in the 1st div, thereโs only ever been one club to have never been relegated from Div 1/ EPL.
I very much doubt we will sign anyone in jan, unless we sell or loan out the likes of squillci and chamakh, in fact what we may see is Henry loaned in again while Gervinho is at the ACN, of course to paraphrase wenger we might do a bigger deal if circumstances mean one of our targets comes on the market

Has Morocco qualified? That would get rid of Chammy for a time, anyway. And what about Frimmy? Is he off to the ANC with Ghana?

younghansolo We still finished in the CL. Wonder where we will be this year.
Yes of course, but nometheless the trajectory was still down.

Even in worse of time, Arsene Wenger's record is better than Mikel Arteta.
Only Unai Emery's 1st season can match up to Wenger's record.
Arsene Wenger had lost not more 4 games in his 8 games for every season since 1997/98.
He joined Arsenal FC on October 1996.
Even when Arsene Wenger lost 3 or 4 games in first 8 games of the season, he still managed to recover and lead the team to Top-4.
Should Arteta lose 5 games in first 8 games off the season, he will have the worse record of any Arsenal managers since 1996/97 season.
Let's see if Mikel Arteta has the potent recovery of Arsene Wenger to lead us to Top-4 this season; after spending 150-mil this season along - which is more than Arsene Wenger ever spent in a single season.

MickTheMan Trajectory was down and still is because of our owner.
3 in 8 will be a good start this year.
I am not a fan of Silent Stan and wish he would scurry back to the other side of the pond and sell Arsenal to someone who demands on field success for the club. But after approving a spend of about 150m pounds on players, the ball is now squarely with Edu and Arteta to deliver the results on the pitch. If they fail, it is entirely on Edu and Arteta. The one blame I will place on the absentee owner is to trust two newbies to turn the club around.
Thats the one to benchmark by for first 8 games. We will have to see how next 4 games go

Shame we didn't invest that kind of money since 10 or 15 years as other top teams. We can do that during a global recesion but couldn't during years of prosperity? The silent cnut was happy with Wenger working his way to the top4 year after year with as few investments as possible. Our team/staff deteriorated all over the club and we are a relegation candidate now. He is entirely to blame and should fukof. These two newbies we've got at the helm are another concequence of his lack of competence and football ambitions.

18 Sep - Burnley vs Arsenal
25 Sep - Arsenal vs Tiny Totts
02 Oct - Brighton vs Arsenal
16 Oct - Arsenal vs Crystal Palace
23 Oct - Arsenal vs Aston VIlla
Fun isn't it for the next 5 games where opponents are confident they can beat Arsenal?
Burnley and Brighton have experienced manager who knew exactly how to counter Arsenal slow-passing game without intensity during attacks; and still vulnerable to quick counter-attacks as shown up by Norwich.

Agree with this.
SS had to spend big, after the Super league disaster.
He said as much.
Arsenals standing in European footy is falling in merchandising, club value, European rankings and fan satisfaction. For the 1st time in 29yrs, Spurs will leap-frog us the euro rankings.
I wouldnโt call this spend too little, but it is too late, no doubt.
Running our club on a self sustainable model was/is a terrible concept in the highly competitive environment of Euro footy
I admit itโs the best way to run a club, from a โgreenโ perspective, but you canโt compete on the cheap.
Our ownership suggests they have ambitions. I canโt see it.
