The weekend saw Arsenal draw twice against mediocre opposition. Of course the games were only friendlies, but some fans were so discontented that they booed the team off. Booing at the end of a friendly is almost unheard of. Personally I can't remember it happening in my 55 years of the supporting the club. But then I am a johnny come lately band wagon jumper, so what do I know? One regular contributor to Arsenal Times, Billy the Kid gives his opinion on the issue. Boris Mellor
Billy the Kid writes: It was a cup competition that Arsenal
set up to prepare the team for the upcoming season and to present to the fans
new signings with the promise of the season to come. But in the end it was a competition which
exposed not only the lack of quality in our team but the chasm and fractures in
the "special togetherness" and the lack of willingness by the
supporters to part with champagne money for beer footballers or to be fobbed
off with comments like "we don't care what the supporters think" as
PHW announced to a reporter with regard to the fans concerns over transfer
policy.
In the end it was a competition that ARSENAL PLC could have done without, but those
of us who are Arsenal FC needed to lift the veil of double speak and platitudes, emanating from
the ARSENAL PLC PR department which has worked so well until now. A veil that seems
to have hypnotised a very large section of Arsenal supporters to the point
where ARSENAL PLC have not only split the dressing room, it also has split the fans
right down the middle.
Although it has created a divide and conflict
amongst us, those of us that saw all of this coming have thankfully
refused to remain silent and acquiesce; even if that truth is a very
inconvenient truth as dodging bullets is an occupational hazard for all messengers.
The realisation of this truth occurred for some over the weekend and culminated
with questions from all corners of our fan base like this one, the most obvious
one posed by posters on this board (including Celine Dion). The question being “Anyone hear the noise at
the end of today’s game" ?
To boo or not to boo? It was warranted, we know now what we knew last season when the club did
not bring in quality and that is that the Wenger project has failed; and many of our best
players want out because the club has no desire, not because they are traitors
or selfish. What does Samir Nasri owe me or you?
They are footballers, they have a short shelf life and like us they want to
win, they want to be remembered for what they achieve on the pitch and they
will be one way or another, the cash they make is ridiculous but people played
pro footie when they were getting 350 quid a week, its not just the cash.
If Huddersfield offered Nasri a 200k a week contract do you think he would take
that over a 100k a week contract at Barcelona ?!
The club is showing no desire and it is my opinion that a rot has already set
in and it has been wholly unnecessary because if we had replaced Henry,
Bergkamp, Viera, Bobby P, Freddie, Edu, Keown, Adams with players worthy of
pulling on their shirts then the youth would complement experience and we would
have won the odd title and cup over the last 6 years.
Someone else pointed it out on another thread on this forum, and its been
highlighted many times before, that for every Vermaelen there is a Cygan a
Stepanovs, a Senderos, and a Squillachi
and that is a consistent trend running through the back 4 especially since
Adams left, but also throughout the team generally.
It does not suffice to have Adams leave and
replace him with a boy with "potential" or bargain basement mediocre
stop gaps. By all means train up the boy with talent but replace your key
players with key players. Repeat the process over when the boy is ready to
replace that key player and then you have a conveyor-belt, you bring in a
talented lad to replace the talented lad who became a key player and so on. In this way buying one key player for 20m to
replace an aging star can save you cash rather than waste 20m on three players
over 5 years who never cut the mustard.
We are in trouble, for all the talk of controlling the game today we did not
look as threatening as we should have going forward, it does not matter that NY
came to draw because 2/3 of the teams in the premiership will approach the game
in the same way all season long. Arsenal have to be able to break down 10 men
behind the ball consistently and need an out and out finisher who can beat a
player. Arsenal also need a LB and a CB,
and they must be quality players; otherwise forget any talk of titles or
success in cup competitions.
I said it at the beginning of the summer, this season will shape the next
decade at Arsenal (just watch this space ) !!!
would like to point out that both Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas owe the club TONS as do MOST of our current players..but don't let that get in the way of a rant
also lets act like we didn't build a bloody BRAND NEW stadium in this same time period shall we
lets forget all that was said by Gazides (because it was of course spin)
lets not bother face the reality that we have restrictions when it comes to transfers...even though it was told to us
lets pretend that Arsenal's sh,ttiest season isn't the envy of the other clubs below us every season
don't forget to point out that its our God given right to win trophies...because we've always won trophies every year
In those 6 trophyless seasons there has been many different factors for us not winning...but why bother analyze any of them..just put them in the same pot...makes total sense
I don't give a f.ck what the next decade looks like..nor if some always negative poster blabs on about how right they feel because we don't win a title...or how every year they predict us not to make even top 4
it won't make one bit of difference in my life...I will still support Arsenal and be happy when they win and sad when they lose..then go on with my day
end of the day..everyone at Arsenal is making their money and providing for their family, whilst people are on here with no business knowledge is acting like the world is going to end if a football club continues down this path
(and many of our best players want out because the club has no desire)
I think you missed the class where we were told the stadium move was needed so that we could compete at the top level for years to come.
If you were running the club, judging by the way you always seem to ignore this we'd be on a path to administration.
Your ambition = give me a trophy now at any cost
The clubs ambition = we want to be at the top long into the future and have chosen to go down that path knowing there could be a lean period. Along the way we'll do all we can to compete.
So tell me, who has more ambition, billy or Arsenal Football Club?
I must have missed the class where it was stated that sloppy defending would be the norm and nothing would be done to rectify it.
I must have missed the class where it was stated that underperforming players would get overperforming salaries.

Rockstaar so you're saying that we aren't active then...you realise that active and closing deals are two different things
don't think its fair to suggest we haven't been active in the market so far
oh come on, you can do better than that. When the board of a club says in an interview that they will be 'very active in the transfer market' I think it is logical to assume they want us to think that that means they will buy some players, ie succesfully enlist them to the clubs playing roster.
If they meant 'trying but failing to buy players' and expected us to recognise the statement as such, then I would suggest they would have not said it.
With people prepared to make such far fetched and feeble excuses for the board (and its not just you Rockstaar I see it every day on twitter) its hardly surprising people are at each others throats is it.

Celine...the only way Arsenal will lower seat prices is if no one is in them..which is why I always said if you think its too high don't go..simps and even then it won't be to the level that would make most people happy
its like the gas prices in the States..they raise them and everyone has a hissy fit..then they raise them even more and people get more crazy...then they lower them to the previously raised price and everyone gladly pays it...then they do it all over again and now we are paying prices we never thought possible
but the fact of the matter is paying the lower prices was always a negative thing and was more detrimental than anything else
Arsenal is the biggest club in London with the newest stadium...why on earth would they have the lower prices than their rivals
they're also trying to compete with people that have unlimited and unchecked funds...lowering ticket prices isn't a solution to that
and finally..we both know that even if it cost £10 to go the match and we weren't winning...it would be the same
oh come on, you can do better than that. When the board of a club says in an interview that they will be 'very active in the transfer market' I think it is logical to assume they want us to think that that means they will buy some players, ie succesfully enlist them to the clubs playing roster.
they are trying celine..thats the point..its not a excuse, just a fact that you're probably not willing to accept...they have different issues to deal with than the other clubs that are buying...another fact
I guess its better to pretend that players didn't change their minds and went elsewhere and things of that nature or dismiss things like we can't even get rid of the dead weight much less bring in new people onto the payroll...you being or have been a manager, you should be aware of issues like this
Well, as it happens, and if I do an article then it will be the basis of it, I completely agree with you. I see the problems of this summer very understandable and difficult to manage ones way out of. The Fabregas and Nasri situations have hamstrung the club, and made other business very difficult indeed, from what I can work out. Both from the point of view of cash in/out and by making the club look less attractive to potential purchases.
People say this is a crucial season, but in my view the crucial season was LAST season, and we are now in the aftermath. Last xmas Wenger, despite a few dodgy defeats in the first half, was in a great position to bolster the team with 2-3 big money buys, go out of the CL gracefully and take the league with the easiest run in of fixtures he was ever likely to get. Song was knackered, Nasri overplayed, and the defence clearly had the potential to leak goals at the drop of a hat. But these could all have been sorted and the entire project could now be vindicated and we could be league champions. It really was in our hands and that close. Yes we would have had to break a few principles, but no more so than when we suddenly had to go for Arshavin when lying 5th 2 years before.
It was Wengers great 'missed window' - he may never get another one, and with the Captain now on strike I dont think I am the only who thinks this.
One thing that was left out of the list at the top. That is the fact that the shareholders on the board presided over a lack of investment and subsequently saw club profits and their share values rise. Just look at who got what recently when SK came in. By spending some decent money, their shares would have decreased in value. The risk of promoting success was not worth the gamble, in their eyes. And did the club not announce that our spending would be curtailed for 5 years after moving into the new stadium? That time has passed. And by everyone renewing their season tickets before seeing what was going to happen, do not come on here moaning if the club do the same has they have done for the last 5 years. You have paid your money, now put up with it. Surely anyone with any sense would realise that the boos yesterday were aimed towards the set-up, as much has been promised with little sign of anything happening. Any new quality faces will only replace those that are going to leave anyway. The next few weeks should be interesting...
I agree that LAST season was massive for us..I thought we had enough about us to win...think Wenger didn't want to make the tough decisions and really lost the dressing room late into the season...for that reason, I don't know if he can take us forward
billy your a bit confused on one of the main points of your thread i.e.arsenal not replacing tony adams with a top player, have you forgotten that it was sol campbell who came in when tony retired.
now excuse me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the make up of the emirates cup crowd mostly non season ticket holders, some of you have claimed on here that any season ticket holder you know would not touch it with a barge pole, or would not go to it, from tv pictures there was a hell of alot of kids at it(so again not likely season tickets holders) and the point of this is - it can have nothing to do with season ticket prices.
Also if it is about lack of spending on signings, then why boo, why not the "spend some fecking money" chants,
for me booing is not acceptable, unless its clear a player is not trying,
the problem is with arsenal is we have no footballing ambition the board members just are taking the club for all the money they have by lieing to the fans and making false promises. rockstaar is not a real fan if you are you want your club to do well, and for a club like arsenal that was unbeaten and winning trophies year in year out and now we have to struggle to make top 4 i think as a fan is embarrassing. and last season like you all said was huge for us and was the final straw for some fans and players but wenger now has to take a look at the team and stop being so stubborn and either strengthen the team by bringing in at leat 3 - 4 players n investing in the team or risk loosing more than nasri and fabregas because others will go if the quillity is not there e.i van persi, wiltshire or maybe wenger should be sporting directer and leave the managing of the team to some one with a bit of balls and will take the team foward as we are going backwards very quickly atm.
regardless of my spelling arsenal are in a seriously bad state and we won't reach top 4 next season that's my point we are the only club not to strengthen our squad we need things to change or even tottenham will overtake us and that is truly unacceptable
Celine's post is key, Wenger has missed the boat. He has blown whatever resources we had on rubbish players like Eboue and Denilson, they werent free.
Meanwhile as Salisbury has said the board asset stripped the club and cashed in their shares

Its plain stupid to say the board have asset stripped, in fact in the last ten years the clubs assets has grown massively, oh I forgot, the moaners don't like to mention the stadium etc
I will not boo, but simply boycott the match and a half-filled Emriates is the best message to send to PHW & co "I don't care what the fans think.." mentality.
In labour force, it is called a "strike".
When will unhappy fans going on strike?
If 2011/12 season is again sell-out crowd for all the hoem games, then PHW & Co has every right to ignore fans' opinions as it is worthless baying and at the end of the day, the fans will just fill up Emirates with their tails between their legs to watch whatever rubbish being dished out on the pitch, drinking whatever overpriced snake-oil being sold on matchday.
The question should be not "to boo or not to boo" but "to boycott or not to boycott".
seanski Ot was pathetic and embarrassing. What the feck are they like? Booing the team cos they DRAW a warm up friendly?
And what may I ask do they think this is going to have on the morale of the team?
I know it wasn't all sections but, you know what, gooners used to have more class
So did the team, worst home record in 14 years. Are crowd booing team or the manager?

Booing. Isn't this hilarious? Are these men or mice? If someone can't take a bit of booing then perhaps they should run home to mummy and cry.
Or act like men and play with determination and tenacity to prove the booers wrong. What kind of weak sportsmen are affected by booing?
I imagine the crowd were booing the slow activity in the transfer market.
And isn't some crowd reaction better than none? Or does everyone want the crowd to clap politely and so give the board and manager the feeling that all is well with the club?
I think we should have a collection for the board after all their hard work and custodianship, leaving us safely in the hands of a Yank and Russki Billionaires

Nobody cares about the trophy, even when arsenal win it most people feck off home early.
No they saw it as a sign that nothing has changed, that the edefence is still poor, that the team cant concentrate or beat weak opposition.
Of course it was only a friendly, and they are hard to judge, but they also saw lack of transfers so far as failure to keep promises of change and activity

This thread shouldve ended after Rocky's first post.
Billy failed to factor in the fact that Chelski, citeh, manure, real and barca blew the market beyond what ordinary clubs could compete favourably in. So the prices and wages of players who we couldve bought to replace the invincibles became too high that it's almost impossible to buy them without going bankrupt. Liverpool is an example of a team who tried to compete financially and was bailed out from going into administration last season. Arsenal in the same period was paying for one of the very best football stadiums in europe but was still competing on all fronts without assistance from any sugar daddy. All they did was had to rely on the genius of arsene wenger in the transfer market and thats why we could get players of similar ability to the one leaving without having to pay over the odds. We replaced adams with campbell, campbell with gallas, and gallas with vermaelen. Nasri in for hleb, fabregas for vieira, rosicky for pires, et al. What prevented us from winning anything was we didnt have the resources to replace players all through the squad and so our main rivals had a much quality in depth to see out a season than us. Apart from quality in depth there is the horrendous injury list and rubbish officiating amongst other things. This leads to over-using of the same number of players which causes fatigue, poor result follows and players are demoralize so they fall completely like a pack of card in the end. So the bottomline is we don't have enough money, even though we didnt build a new stadium, we still couldnt have favourably competed financially with chelski, citeh, and manure. The board saw this and are looking for new ways to generate revenue in addition to what the stadium brings, they also decided to develope their own worldclass players which is lately beginning to bear fruit with the emergence of wilshere, gibbs, frimpong, bartley and szczesny. This is the most honourable thing to do instead of go borrow some more money or asking for help from a badly corrupt sugar daddy from arab. Any fan who isnt proud of that deserves another club.
As for the talk of paying too much money to poor players, i disagree completely. All our players more than deserved what they earned at the time they were given the contract, no one complained then. Also, while it is true that in business big wages is associated with high performance and that is why arsenal is known for punching above their weights, if you compare the wages of bendtner to players in similar position in the top four you see the fact is we're actually underpaying our players. Bendtner earns less than kalou, eboue less than ferreira and bosingwa, etc. We're the only club in the top four with a salary cap and our first teamers earns much lower than those of our rivals. I know these moaners always scrape around looking for things to criticize, but on the wage front we're one of the most disciplined in the world.
Lastly this quetion goes to padre and whoever wants to answer: in the last six years we've had so many players on our books, could you please name me five players who left the club for less than what we bought them? Plz don't add players such as flamini and gallas who was still good and had paid their dues but left on a free, the idea is to see how many players who asset-stripped us because we were paying too much for them and they lost value and became a liability. It happens all the time with our rivals so since we do that all the time it shouldnt be a problem for you to name these players.
"A club is a union between players, supporters and directors". - Wenger.
Arsene wenger has done an absolutely masterful job within the constraints he has... Every single year, he has outperformed our spending every single year he has been manager. It is extraordinary. -Gazides.
There is no genius of Wenger in the transfer market. If you think Silvestre, Cygan, Stepanovs, Luzhny, Squillaci and Bendtner equals transfer marketing genius you're a clown.
What players of similar ability? Since when have we replaced players of the calibre of Vieira, Henry, Campbell or Bergkamp?
Not sure we've even adequately replaced Adebayor! Fabregas and Vieira are different types of players. As for Rosicky replacing Pires, are you mental?
Like so many you're hoodwinked into believing we have no money. Of course we've got money, it's just unlike Manu, who also have "no money", we don't spend it on the players we need.
I am not worried about players who left for less than we bought them, though Reyes is an example, but of overpaid players that Arsenal cant get rid of because clubs dont want to play inflated wages. Hence no buyer for Denilson, and no rush for Nik or Almunia.
It has been obvious for a while, but not whole 6 years, that these palyers paid too much. I only became aware of the policy two years ago when Gazides admitted at Q and A, so can hardly be to blame for not raising it 6 years ago.
A bigger concern is that as players leave their replacements are inferior, thus Ashley, Clichy, Gibbs, or Vieira, Flamini, Song

Spot on. If Wenger had replaced the players like for like then we would have at least won 1 or 2 more titles, maybe an FA cup or CC, but since those players left we've never had a team/squad as good.
He's always skimped on defence, kept too many average players, and not balanced the team with some tougher characters - and we've paid for it with trophyless seasons.
Now, it's become difficult to plug the gaps, get rid of the deadwood, let alone replace the better players that want to leave.

You're the biggest moaner of the lot.
You really should be hiding yourself cos you're smeling all over the place. Now, go on fool, how do you replace the patrick vieira, henry, campbell, and bergkamp of this world? Wenger did his best while building a new stadium (better than all the trophies in the universe) by replacing bergkamp with rvp, campbell with gallas, henry with walcott, and vieira with fabregas with a combine fee lower than the price of henderson. Now, thats marketing genius. Next time don't post just because others are posting, try and think something constructive to contribute, you're very annoying like a tiny little @#$%& that won't go away.
Are you sure about that? Might be a forward in the future, but in the immediate I would say he's replaced Llungberg.
But if you're right, then there's a problem straight away - Walcott is light years away from Henry. Not as skilful, not as good a finisher, not as good an end product.
I don't have a problem with the players you mentioned, but the rubbish ones that Hippo mentioned have cost us over the years, when the club tried skimp & replace established experience with youth & vastly inferior players.
Padre Pio overpaid players that Arsenal cant get rid of because clubs dont want to play inflated wages. Hence no buyer for Denilson, and no rush for Nik or Almunia.
Provide any prove that we havn't sold denilson, almunia and Nik due to wages alone. Meanwhile the fact is most players who leave arsenal goes on to earn bigger wages elsewhere. Do you want to overlook the fact?
I'd say it was a combination of wages & the fact they are just not up to it.
I thought (and probably many others too) that these 3 weren't good enough at least 2 seasons ago - unfortunately wenger couldn't.
It would have been easier to sell them then as their wages would have been a lot less, and they would have had less time in which to show up their failings.
Now, they're paid too much for how good they are, and other teams know they're not up to it.
It says a lot that the only EPL team interested in Bendtner is STOKE, and I've yet to hear any EPL team interested in the other 2.

Arshavin replaced Ljungberg, walcott will be a forward and there's no problem about that. His finishing and pace is his strongest attributes, he doesn't need to be so skillful as henry who was one of a kind.

Football is a team sport, you can't lose a league and say it was caused by any one player. Silvestre was brought in basically for his experience not neccesarily for his footballing abilities. He was fourth or fifth choice centreback, his transfer fee speaks volume. It's the same thing with squillaci. Cygan was actually ok and he won trophies with us and even went to become a first choice for villareal when they were very successful. These players were good, but the problem was when they had to do the job they weren't brought in to do like asking silvestre to start in defence at the nou camp. Every footballer is good untill you give him a job bigger than him. Our fringe players often time have had to do so much work bigger than them. Bendtner has better stats than kalou, untill he's your main striker at the nou camp .
De Times Silvestre was brought in basically for his experience not neccesarily for his footballing abilities
Unfortunately it was his footballing abilities that let us down.
As for Walcott, seeing as you've admitted he will be a forward in the future, then at this moment in time Henry has effectively been replaced with fresh air.
Quote:
De Times Football is a team sport, you can't lose a league and say it was caused by any one player.
I'm not saying it is - we keep f.ucking up because we have several players in the team at any 1 time that are not up to the job.
Over the years, if Wenger had spent 20-25m on 1 really decent signing each year rather than 10m each on juniors, & makeweights like Stepanovs etc then we would have a better team now.
As it is, we need 3 or 4 in the 20-25m range to make us winners again & it's proving difficult because of their f.ucking intransigence on their 'sustainable model' policy.
And the longer it goes on the harder it will be to fix - just like the London Underground. You end up fixing bits here & there, but as 1 bit is replaced something else fails so it's never really in top condition....and so you end up 7 years without a trophy. There.
Pip you'd still go 6yrs without a trophy or even worse signing only one top player per season, and who says those top players wouldnt want to leave anyway? Besides if you put the amount we spend on potentials together, it isnt even up to what some top players cost in today's market. And those top players wouldve been aging by now leaving us asking for replacements already. Look at ribbery, he wouldnt even get into our starting eleven now and he was one of the most expensive players in the world a few years ago. The thing is signing big name players to replace another one is only done by clubs with lots of money to spend, and in today's market by clubs with sugar daddies, and not clubs paying the debt for a magnificient stadium. We're certainly not as big as some moaners think we are, and the financial status we have now was attained by running the club using our current model. What ever wisdom that has brought us to our current height is enough to convince me there's something greater in the near future.
