In January, Arsenal were in a great position to make a run at the title, not to mention the other competitions. BUT, there was a glaring hole in the central defense with Koscielny inconsistent as he was learning on the job, with Vermaelen injured indefinitely, with Djourou playing ok (at the time), but still very inexperienced. With Squilacci having already proven himself to be essentially worthless - truly a player who made those around him play even worse. At that point in the season, we badly needed an experienced, physical presence in the middle of the defense to finish up the season strong. Our dismal record against set pieces was quite well known.
Wenger stood by
Instead, Wenger saw nothing wrong - he saw Nasri, Chamakh, Wilshire, and Szczesny improving the squad.
But defence
... what about defence? Wenger did
absolutely nothing to strengthen the squad.
The fact that Wenger did NOTHING in January sent a very loud and clear message
to our players that Wenger places personal pride or frugality ahead of WINNING
and proper roster management. At the very least, the players expect that the
manager will be astute enough to plug the leaks.
Wenger's failure to take action crushed our players' competitive spirit. Not
only did we drop points because of our weak defensive play, but Wenger lost the
locker room as well.Indifference
spread throughout the squad and it showed up on the pitch.
Down the
final run in, we gave every indication of a squad that QUIT on its manager. This
past season was lost because the players have lost faith in Wenger. Next season
is lost because the players have lost faith in Wenger.
If Wenger did not do it in January, he never will.Cesc
knows that now. So does Nasri. They are actively seeking a ticket out of here.
Even worse, any decent transfer target will see this as well. There is no hope of quality help being on the way. Sadly, this situation will not improve until Wenger is replaced.
He WILL NOT turn this around.
Other clubs will get the targets that we need as long as Wenger is the face of Arsenal football. Some might say that we lost Player X because of money; I say that we are losing current and potential stars because of Wenger.
Arsenal will no longer be a favoured destination as long as he remains here, unless it is for some young gun looking to play here as a station stop on the way to glory somewhere else or for an old warhorse looking for a golden parachute to retirement. Players in their prime will look to play for somebody else, someplace else.
Wenger's time has passed; it is now
simply a question of when a new leader is chosen. ... and waiting.
The drip, drip, drip of diminishing returns has begun.
Watch ...

losing ther CC final effected confidence, losing to barca also took its toll, more than any lack of signings in jan
also do you know for a fact wenger did not give the board a list of transfer targets in jan, and that they failed to cough up the cash, well do you.
Also on not signing defenders in Jan, well we had an outstanding defensive record for the months of Jan, Feb and March,7 clean sheets in 10 games, so did this lack of signing a defender in jan only come to the attention of the players in april,
we as much lacked a fit Cesc as any defensive signing, it has as much if not more of an effect on our results
I do agree with you on the point that it looks like the players have stopped listening to wenger, and as I said before on this there is only two options to put it right, one is change the manager and two is dump a fair chunk of the squad, give it a real shake up. Not sure either is anyway close to happening or even likely to happen

Karsene, Nasri is not rubbish but he stopped playing after January, I think he had made up his mind to go then

A more abuse from our friendly tiny totts troll thetruthis, you really need to seek some professional help, your obession with me is so sad,
As for your view that I lack knowledge of defence, really is laughable, especially when you have offered the view that your knowledge of HOCKEY Defence makes you some sort of expert, as I said before, we all know your are an idiot, you don't have to keep proving it
50 years and counting

Hilarious. At times Eduardo you come across as the most sensible member on here besides Padre who is the most balanced, as he should be, seeing he's in charge.
But you have this obsession with anyone who has extreme views and immediately declare them a Spud.
Thetruthis may well despise Wenger but that doesn't make him a Spud. I have no time for Wenger either. Lost any belief in him five years ago. No idea why this man is still Arsenal manager with all the nonsense he speaks and the utter dereliction of duty to the team. By this I mean a man who has continually ignored gk and defensive problems which have been apparent for several seasons now.
As I've said since 2006 we'll not win a trophy of any note again under this clown. He's been found out on the pitch and off it. Now does that make me a Spud?

Yes, his head is in the sand - deluded approach - but a 6m a year head in the sand.
We're going to have to suck it up until he is gone (one more season), then wait for the new manager and see what he can do.
Hopefully, Kronke will wake up and invest in the new the guy. Either ways we're going to have to wait for a long time before we see this club as a major force again.
I'm past getting upset with poor results as I've become well used to the idea that we're s,hit under WENGER, and as such expect little. However, I do feel terrible frustration at how WENGER carries on regardless, stuck in his ways.

its the board as much as wenger. limited ambition to say the least. for them I dont think they see any difference between finishing 4th and winnng the title. since Dein left its like that.

I too have avoided this thread, but am of the opinion that this summer is Wengers biggest ever,if he gets this wrong, and frankly its started off in the usual vein,he should be summarily sacked.
There thats the first time I have used the S word but its come to that, instead of working for French TV he should be getting rid of the dross, and there is plenty, and that includes the much vaunted youth sections dross and wont bes.
Jenkinson sums it up,and I hope the lad goes on to be a great player for us,he was loaned out by Charlton to a non league club last season, and by all accounts many of their fans do not rate him.Not what is needed right now, lets cut to the chase.we need proven EPL players, not potential or even for that matter the likes of these Gervinho or Hazard guys, illustration, Chamakh we cannot afford a years settling in.
