Busacca and Barcelona Saints Should be in Dock Not Wenger

Saint Eric

By Boris Mellor
March 10 2011

There’s a new cult of sainthood taken off and it was initiated by Massimo Busacca. The most pure in thought and deed team in the world didn’t get one yellow card at the Nou Camp, whilst nasty, dirty Arsenal got five of them.

Not only that but by issuing two of them to van Persie the ref ensured that Barcelona, who were a goal down could start their fight back with only 9 men to play against (I don’t count Fabregas as his brains had gone to mush at the thought of playing his heroes).

Now of course we are not allowed to raise any of this as Barcelona had had 16 shots or so, and Arsenal none at the time van Persie was sent off. Ironically by sending off RvP the ref ensured the shot was rubbed of the slate. I don’t care if he heard the whistle or not, I am not prepared to run through the Magruder film again and again to see what happened on the grassy knoll, players take lame shots at goal every week and don’t get sent off.

No rather than investigate that I am more puzzled by the fact that Barca didn’t get one yellow! How could that be?  I’ve studied the footage with that in mind and believe there are only two possible conclusions, 1) The referee thinks the sun shines out of their orifices. 2) They are saints.

Arsenals Robin Van Persie is grabbed by Barcelonas Eric Abidal (left, hidden) during the UEFA Champi

Saint Eric Laying of Hands

I am not convinced they are saints, and I don’t believe in Father Christmas therefore I believe Busacca has some explaining to do. But fear not the brave boys at UEFA HQ won’t leave a stone unturned to discover the truth. Hence they are charging Wenger and Nasri – they are utter charlatans and hypocrites.

Only one statistic counts

The statistics that the press are salivating on are possession and shots on goal, and wow Barca excelled at that, and it was lovely to watch. But before van Persie was sent off, and with only 30 minutes to go they were losing on aggregate.

In the first leg it was Arsenal that were strongest in the last 30 minutes, after Arsenal had weathered the storm. The fact that RvP was sent off after an audacious attacking move went wrong confirmed, to my mind anyhow, that Arsenal were beginning the assault. After all goals change games, but so do sendings off. Apparently Barca would have won even if Arsenal had eleven men. Maybe they would have, but it would have been good to see them have to try. After all they huffed and puffed in the first half but didn’t score until the 45 th Minute and Fabregas error, the needed a bit of help to get the first goal. Yes they played lots of lovely football, and it was a brilliant goal, but Arsenal had roped the dope.

True Arsenal hadn’t created anything, but that wasn’t what they were looking for. You don’t play Rosicky if you really want incisive attack, no it was five at the back and all hands to the pump. It was rope a dope. Football isn’t ice skating, it isn’t judged on how many pretty patterns have been weaved.

The plan might have worked but we will never know; pathetic Arsenal get 3 goals against Barca, magical Spurs get one goal against Milan and are now favourites. Pity they won’t be in it next year.

I say it again how could it be that Arsenal got 5 yellows and Barca none. With so many yellows dished out by 60 minutes it was only a matter of time before an Arsenal player went off. I don’t care how good Barca were, and they were very good, this was not a fair match. I hope Wenger sticks to his guns and publicises his assessment of the most pathetic refereeing I have ever had the misfortune to observe.

if we all get sucked in by how awesome barca played then we shouldn't consider the points you made..but looking at it over and over again without bias, i have come to the point that what you pointed out was probably wengers plan until the ref's decided to become the talking point.

the fact that they got no card after abidal grabbed rvp's throat is sickening..charging nasri & wenger is the most hypocritical thing i've ever heard and confirms what we all knew;THE SUN SHINES OUT OF BARCA BUTT FOR UEFA..THEY CERTAINLY DIDN'T WANT ANY TEAM TO SPOIL THEIR APPLE CART ESPECIALLY WHEN ARSENAL STUNNED THEN AT THE EMIRATES.

but we should have won our group to avoid this..

all your points are valid and i'm sure thats why wenger is incensed by that decision

Can We Now Trust The Process 🤔🤷🏿‍♀️ or Should We Still Remain Cautious 🙇🏿‍♀️

I agree with you Padre.

While there is no doubt that Barca were very impressive and played "better" than us, the fact is that the sending off changed the game and made our task impossible, just at the moment that the momentum had turned our way with an equaliser and our first breakaway attack.

We will never know if we would have won or not with 11 men, but we had a chance to do the same as in the first leg and "win ugly" despite the possession stats - what everyone keeps saying we need to do. Remember in the first half Barca had just two shots on target.

The referee was appalling throughout - actually he should have awarded Barca a penalty in the first half after Diaby's foul, in addition to failing to award any cards against Barca players for some of their cynical fouls.

Maybe, just maybe, if the psychological damage is not too severe, this will turn out to be a blessing in disguise as we face one not two games a week for the final 9 weeks of the campaign. But I fear it may demoralise the players and out season peter out again.

Bring back stepanovs!

spot on mate.it made me die how barcelona huffed and puffed for an hour only scoring once through a mistake by us and are lauded.yet when we do it at home 'we cant break the opposition down'

It will be interesting to see how the team respond during our remaining games. Even if it goes belly up in the FAC on Saturday, we will have a golden chance with only the PL remaining. For once I hope they get a grip, keep their heads up and grasp a fantastic opportunity. I appreciate that we are a confidence team, but AW now has the chance to earn his big wages and show everyone that he really can manage this team. Otherwise the pressure will be immense after he foolishly stated that we were going for all 4 trophies. Wish he would just keep quiet sometimes..

Erm, if we'd met them in the final we'd only have played 90 minutes against them - which as we've all seen, is winnable!!

"Just when the momentum was swinging our way" - what a patronizing comment. Everything arsenal did in that game was well-planned. We were in absolute control of the situation and was ahead most of the game. Momentum wasnt SWINGING our way, we made our own momentum - we were beginning to carryout our plan b before the redcard. The organization at the back in the first half was the best i've ever seen frm an arsenal team. I'm proud of our performance.

I disagree, the momentum did go our way a bit, who the f@ck wants to give Barca a lot of the ball. Even if the plan was to defend first it wasn't to soak up that much pressure.

still not worth a yellow as the World cup ref showed clearly.

We all know Howard Web's peformance in that game was awful! Howard Web was a bottler in that match! He bottled sending off De Jong for his karate kick! He bottled giving RVP his second yellow card for shooting after he clearly heard both whistles!

A stricter referee would have sent off De Jong and RVP. A stricter Ref DID send off a petulant RVP in Camp Nou!

Abidal should have been booked and could very well have been sent off! I'm not hiding from that fact! Besides we don't know what RVP said/did to wind him up so much that he grabbed him in the first place, and RVP was already on the referees last nerve for b!tch slapping alves in the face, which could easily have been a red and also deliberatley trying to injure Messi! Not to mention the time wasting that the referee had noticed was going on from Arsenal previous to the Red Card. I'm not hiding from the fact Abidal was lucky not to be booked! But you should also not hide from the facts that I have mentioned! Do they all fit into your Pro-Barcelona, anti-arsenal bias of the referee?

2 penalties not given to Barca in 1st leg, djouro/arshavin handballs

Messi legitimate goal was disallowed 1st leg

Alex Song should have been sent off and given his 2nd yellow twice in the first leg

Stonewall penalty not given in 2nd leg

Koscielny not given 2nd yellow

RVP not booked for disgustingly trying to injure Messi

Wilshere not booked for disgusting challenge with his studs up on Iniesta!

And also the fact that in the WC final, RVP has done the exact same thing after whistle was blown! Blown twice no less, and he was already on a yellow card! He did it thinking i'm already on a yellow, the ref won't dare give me a 2nd for such a thing. Especially after what De Jong got a way with under Howard Webbs watch!

Andy cole, since you have time to dig out RVP videos of kicking the ball away, why don't you dig out videos of Barca play acting, feigning injuries and those fouls they got away with.

everything else you've put, who gives a f&ck, they won, the game's over, let not go through every tackle.freekick, throw in, corner, header, Arsenal or Barca should have had, we just wanted to finish the game with 11 on the pitch for a reason better than a shot after the whistle at 60mins, they made a better account of themselves on a whole and deserved to win.You seem to think having RvP on would have guaranteed the win and it would've been an injustice if we finished with all our players
