Rice or No Dice? Do we pass go

Another day, another round of feverishly refreshing the transfer ITK's Twitter accounts for morsels of information that will satiate one's hunger for this deal to be completed.
How did we get to this point where our whole transfer window experience is condensed into the Twitter accounts of two individuals, one of whom has a profile picture of them making a phone call, even though the phone is on locked screen.
It's not just eager supporters who are sucked into this demand for "updates", Sky Sports, who used to hold monopoly on this sort transfer news, now also rely on their own in-house Twitter ITK's, to be "first", if not entirely accurate in their reporting. They on the surface at least, used to uphold higher standards, of checking and verifying rumours before getting the yellow ticker out. However, the mocking criticism of now being Slow Sports News and surpassed in a race to the bottom by the ITK's has seen any real sense of journalistic integrity go out the window.
Which brings us back to Declan Rice, a man famously known for his loyalty to the badge and never wavering on his initial commitments. It gets a lost when the figures start flying how much we are willing to pay for this guy from West Ham. Rewind even a year ago and people would have been calling in the fraud squad for Edu and Garlick if they proposed paying close to 100m for a player we aren't entirely sure what Arteta's plans are for him.
Yet we have signposted this one for the best part of 6 months, apparently done everything bar build Declan a new house so he will stay in London, so the pressure after than January window to get this one over the line is immense.
West Ham for their part haven't being docile parties to this process either, going full Shaktar is in their media briefings over what fee it will take to pry Rice away from them. But like any deal, for a player or 3 bed semi-d the price is going to be what somebody is willing to pay, and only if there is competition for the product.
As predictable as Edu BBQ on a sunny June weekend, as soon as we started to slow roll our bids for Rice, Man City's interest suddenly arrived to the party, but without the memo to BYOB. The ITK's went on overdrive, talking of "expected" bids and "advanced" talks, but no bid materialized (as of typing). Maybe the falcon carrying the bid from Abu Dhabi got lost, or it decided to go and deliver cheques between Saudi and Stamford Bridge instead.
Either way the ITK's stuck their neck out on the information West Ham wanted in the public domain, but now kind of look like what we suspected they might be all along, convenient conduits for club propoganda. Feed them a juicy morsel, but the price comes with having to used as part of the negotiation process. Maybe they are happy to be used in such a way, so long as they are "first" and the clicks and interviews keep on a rolling.
But for supporters it reminds us that nothing is sacred on social media when it comes to being the one to break a big story. Whether you're trying to sign a 24 year old Irish footballer or march on Moscow, there will always be an angle to the information we desperately crave.
Three days have passed since City's "imminent" bid and we are already seeing a rolling back of West Ham's position. The third bid might be the one to seal it they say, so long as it matches their expectations. How many more stalking horses and rabbits out of a hat can West Ham pull until theyface the fact that we might be the only ones serious enough to put close to 100m down for this guy.
One suspects there will be a few twists and turns left in this one, how much more spinning and vocabulary gymnastics the ITK's will do before runs it course will now, unfortunately, be as interesting as the deal ltself.

The Arsenal board are being reported as having held an emergency meeting on Friday, where directors reported the possibility of an accelerated pursuit of West Ham United’s captain, Declan Rice.
According to Arsenal Informer website the meeting revolved around the Englishman’s potential as the new face of the Gunners, with key figures seeing him as a critical transfer window addition. Tim Lewis, Edu Gasper, and Vinai Venkatesham were among the personnel present during the discussion.
A key strategy explored during the meeting involved the payment structure of the £100 million fee demanded by West Ham for Rice. It was suggested that paying the substantial fee over a shorter time frame, in instalments over three years, could showcase Arsenal’s commitment and serious intent to meet West Ham’s requirements.
The urgency to increase the bid for the 24-year-old has been intensified by Manchester City’s interest in making a formal offer for Rice.
Despite the potential competition from the Premier League and Champions League holders, the London side remain confident of securing the services of the highly sought-after player.
The question has to be asked ….If Arsenal really want Declan, why don`t they just pay the asking price?

There is no going rate when you start to negotiate for players pushing the 100m mark. No club is rocking up with a cheque for 100m to be paid in one go.
Comparable records such as the Enzo deal payments are spread across the course of his contract, City agreed to break the Grealish deal into three 33m payments over 3 years.
We are trying to do the same for Rice, so its less about paying what the selling club demand overall, more about what form that payment takes, and crucially how it allows us to do other business as well.
If we want him that much it doesn't matter whatever formation.
We pay what they are basically asking or big boys will.
We either pay or walk.

Benfica wanted the Enzo release clause money paid up front, but Chelsea were only willing to pay it over the course of three years, in the end to break the impasse Chelsea offered to pay more for Enzo overall, as long as they could stretch the payments over the course of his contract.
I am sure Villa would have wanted more of the Grealish money upfront as well, but it was stretched out over three years instead.
That's how the "big" clubs are acting, and its what we are effectively trying to do as well. You dont just waltz in and dance to the selling clubs tune, no matter how much pressure or spin they try to throw your way.

And who do you think it’s leaking that information? It’s not Arsenal, is it?
You’re the biggest critic on here of the £72m Nicolas Pepe deal. It’s right to be circumspect with these enormous bids. Even United are negotiating for Mount instead of putting whatever money Chelsea want on the table. It’s not just the transfer fee, it’s the add ons and duration of the payments. We got the Havertz deal done but you’ve ignored that as you don’t want the player.
It was rumoured that West Han want £120m made in 2 payments. If we did that then those involved should be reprimanded.
Show a little patience. We appear to be the only club in the mix at the moment. Not sure where that City bid is you were all getting excited about the other day.

Pepe was ultimately not good enough, but the structure of the deal meant we put only 20m down at the time, and agreed to pay the remainder off over the course of the contract.
We also signed Saliba that summer as well, which was an eye watering fee at the time for an 18 year old CB.
Who knows, if we went for Zaha and Palace's demands for more cash down at the time, we mighnt have had the money to do the Saliba deal.
Point being, you can just look at one transfer in isolation and say pay the faawking money, its a balancing act between what you already owe on previous deals and what you want to do elsewhere in a window.

Great article and it's very obvious to see who is planting the rumours.
Either ways, club is right to negotiate and if it doesn't work, the are plenty of DMs in the market and plenty of time in the window. This is not January and we are anyway going to have to spend the next year consolidating our position in the top 5.

The Rice to Arsenal saga has now developed a huge twist with reports that the Gooners are looking elsewhere as the Hammers reject their various bids.
The Daily Mirror have reported that they are now looking at the French international Youssouf Fofana as an alternative to him.
Rice is Arsenal`s number one target for the summer transfer window after captaining the Hammers to the Europa Conference League victory but the Gooners won`t or can`t agree to the Irons valuation of our talismanic skipper
According to L’Equipe, the Gunners are now battling Newcastle and, in a strange twist of fate, West Ham for Fofan with the Irons have had a long-standing interest in the 24-year-old but Arsenal have now joined the race.
LÈquipe go on to state that if a “reasonable offer” comes in, he would be allowed to leave the club. Transfermarkt give the Frenchman a valuation of £25m
Monaco still have the option of extending his contract by a further year, so there is no pressure on the French side to sell. Also they have yet to receive an offer for him.
In the meantime with Rice unlikely to move north as is being proved by Man City he could yet remain at the Hammers should Arsenal go elsewhere.

Doubt we're clever enough to do this, but it could be a bit of a media leak ploy to steer West Ham into accepting our next offer.
They seem to be leading the chase for this chap, so by declaring our interest we're basically saying if we don't get Rice and he goes elsewhere, we'll steal your #1 replacement.

West Ham United star Declan Rice's "preferred destination remains" Arsenal and he's "settled in London", according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.
Will Arsenal still sign Declan Rice?
Since the beginning of this summer's domestic window, which officially opened last week, reports surrounding the future of Rice have been ever-present.
It was long thought that Arsenal were in pole position for the England international ahead of other previously linked suitors, like Chelsea, but Man City recently entered the fray in their bid to source an Ilkay Gundogan replacement.
Pep Guardiola's involvement slightly complicates matters for Arsenal, who no longer have a clear-run at signing Rice. Some media sources, like Sky's Gianluca Di Marzio, have even claimed that City's talks for Rice are fairly advanced.
News from The Athletic's David Ornstein came in this morning, detailing that the Premier League champions lodged a formal offer for Rice last night, but their £80 million bid (plus £10 million in add-ons) has been rejected.

Since the beginning of this summer's domestic window, which officially opened last week, reports surrounding the future of Rice have been ever-present.
It was long thought that Arsenal were in pole position for the England international ahead of other previously linked suitors, like Chelsea, but Man City recently entered the fray in their bid to source an Ilkay Gundogan replacement.
Pep Guardiola's involvement slightly complicates matters for Arsenal, who no longer have a clear-run at signing Rice. Some media sources, like Sky's Gianluca Di Marzio, have even claimed that City's talks for Rice are fairly advanced.
News from The Athletic's David Ornstein came in this morning, detailing that the Premier League champions lodged a formal offer for Rice last night, but their £80 million bid (plus £10 million in add-ons) has been rejected.

Manchester City don’t really want Declan Rice and have only bid £90million for the West Ham star as a favour to Arsenal, according to Eni Aluko.
Rice is at the centre of a bidding war between Arsenal and Man City, with the 24-year-old midfielder expected to leave West Ham this summer. The Hammers have turned down three offers so far – two from the Gunners and one from City – and are holding out for their valuation of £100m.
Mikel Arteta is determined to land Rice, who is his number one transfer target, and Arsenal plan to return with further offers after seeing their latest bid worth £90m – made up of £75m plus add-ons – rejected. City’s rejected offer was a deal of £80m plus £10m in add-ons – and it is this bid which former Lionesses forward Aluko has a theory about.
“There’s a lot of cat and mouse here and as a sporting director, I used to do this a lot,” Aluko said on talkSPORT. “I used to call up a club and say ‘right, can you put a bid in’ and that would get my owner to basically put a higher bid in. It’s a bit like an auction.
“I don’t think that Manchester City actually want to sign Declan Rice. I think what is going on here is that Arteta has picked up the phone to Pep [Guardiola] and said ‘Arsenal are going to do the incremental bid approach, if you put a bid in, then that will push my owner’. I think there’s a bit of that going on here.”
Aluko added: “I don’t know why Arsenal are doing this incremental approach but it says to me, Man City coming in later on, it feels like that it is going to help Arsenal.
“The fans are going to get on it now and say ‘hold on a second, if you let Declan Rice go to Man City when he was our number one target, then that says a lot about Arsenal. So I think there is a bit of that going on. I used to do it all the time and it used to work.”
Rice is understood to prefer a move to Arsenal, which would mean he doesn’t have to uproot his current life in London. Following an impressive 2022/23 season, Arteta has sold his vision to Rice, who is now waiting for the bidding war to play out.
West Ham are fully expecting Rice to leave in the summer transfer window, but are ready to play the long game. Manager David Moyes has made it clear the club want at least £100m for their star player, who helped them win the Europa Conference League last season.
Arsenal are expecting Granit Xhaka to leave for Bayer Leverkusen, while Thomas Partey is being courted by Juventus. Rice would become the focal point of the midfield, with Kai Havertz poised to join in a £65m move from Chelsea and Ajax defender Jurrien Timber another target.

The West Ham star will leave the east London outfit ahead of next season after almost a decade at the club.
Premier League champions Manchester City and runners-up Arsenal are both fighting for his signature this summer, with both sides so far seeing bids rejected.
A move to either club will see him take his game to the next level, with Champions League football on offer for the first time in his career.
Many players tend to switch from old numbers to new ones when they complete transfers.
However, Rice is keen to maintain his own personal tradition and stick with the no.41 shirt he was given as a youngster at his next club.
Gary Neville asked the England international on The Overlap about why he has played with such a number on his back, and he replied: "It was just a number I was given in the academy by the kitman Jamo.
"So when you're in the U23s, you've obviously got the first-team squad numbers and then it starts to get to the higher numbers when you're in the U23s.
"I was given 41, I remember when I went to Seattle on my first trip with the first-team, I just got given 41 and you know what, it's stayed with me since.
"To be honest with you, I've been having this conversation with my Dad, regardless of what happens in my career, I think I might stay with the 41."
When asked if he would change or not, he answered: "I don't know, I just think Rice 41 has a nice ring to it, obviously I've grown up playing in it.
"I'm a bit superstitious with things like that, I don't know if I change to a new number it would hamper my performances, I don't know I just think sometimes about a couple things like that."
Both City and Arsenal currently have no one with the number 41 shirts, so Rice is set to fit in wherever he goes.
Even though his next move is yet to be revealed, the 24-year-old is likely to continue to shine on the big stage.

Having tabled their third offer, comprising of £100m in guaranteed cash plus a further £5m in bonuses, officials from both clubs were locked in advanced talks on Wednesday with a view to ironing out the finer details of the deal's structure.
Mail Sport understands that Arsenal's offer proposed the guaranteed portion of the fee be paid over the course of four years.
West Ham ideally want the cash paid in two instalments by the start of 2025.
But the issue has been described as minor and not a point that will see the deal collapse, with both clubs now working towards reaching an agreement rather than haggling over the price.

Another significant development on Wednesday morning arrived when West Ham received information that Rice wanted them to accept Arsenal's £105million offer.
Formally agreeing personal terms will not be an issue, with Rice to sign a long term contract worth at least £250,000-per-week.

Such a hefty fee for a midfielder is bound to draw criticism, and it necessitates taking a closer look at the reasoning behind Arsenal making such a transfer. As we saw with their success last season in pushing Manchester City for the Premier League title, this squad was not built haphazardly, nor have Mikel Arteta and Maurice Edu made unnecessary gambles on the transfer market.
So let’s explain why the 100 million pound up-front transfer fee for Declan Rice is a worthy investment by Arsenal as they look to return to the summit of European football in 2023 and beyond.
A necessary skill set
Firstly, it is vital to discuss the construction of the Arsenal squad. Every decision Mikel Arteta and Maurice Edu have made on the market has been in line with the vision of what the manager wants. There is still a belief held by the average fan that only forwards should cost this kind of money, but the reality is that midfielders are becoming just as important in the modern game. And in fact, players who can affect all phases of the game significantly like Bellingham, Tchouaméni, and, of course, Rice are even more valuable than forwards because they touch so many aspects of a team’s performance.

He averaged a combined 3.8 tackles and interceptions per game with a key pass per game last season, completing 88 percent of his passes. That Pep Guardiola is willing to retreat from a £105m battle for Declan Rice’s signature suggests he is still confident of beating Mikel Arteta in the longer war of the 2023-24 title race.
Arsenal are now in pole position to sign the West Ham midfielder after Manchester City withdrew their interest. With Mateo Kovacic having replaced the outgoing Ilkay Gundogan and amidst hope that Rodri will stay in spite of interest from Barcelona, Guardiola’s need was never so great as Arteta’s.
Yet the north Londoners are on the verge of fixing a long-standing issue that risked deepening with the imminent departures of Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey.
Arteta did his best to turn Xhaka into a box-to-box midfielder, with some – though not total – success. The Swiss midfielder’s Arsenal career was salvaged to such an extent that he now heads for Bayer Leverkusen the subject of redemptive praise, not ire, as was once the case in his strained relationship with the club’s fans. Partey, meanwhile, is believed to be attracting interest from Italy and Saudi Arabia.
Replacing Partey is the bigger ask for Rice, not least because he was perhaps the Arsenal midfielder with the most defined role. The incoming West Ham legend – and he will be remembered as such after bowing out – steps in neatly to compensate for Arteta losing Partey’s defensive solidity.

That speaks of his evolution from a right-sided centre-back as a youngster. Indeed a move of this significance might well have happened sooner in his career had he not taken so long to shake off that notion of a defender experimenting in midfield in his early years.
At 24 years of age, his attacking output has improved too. Four goals and two assists in 2022-23 was his career best tally even as West Ham struggled domestically. The midfielder was by far their standout performer and was Gareth Southgate’s first choice at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, averaging more passes per game than any other England midfielder.
Exactly how he operates as a deep-lying playmaker could depend on the personnel around him, with Arteta expected to maintain a 4-3-3 system. Jorginho has announced he will stay despite speculation linking him with a transfer away just five months after his arrival, but Mohamed Elneny and Albert Sambi Lokonga are among a long list who could be move on.
Romeo Lavia has also been targeted, the 19-year-old Southampton midfielder who models himself on Fernandinho, but with Liverpool and Newcastle also monitoring the teenager Arsenal are thought to be reluctant to engage in a bidding war. West Ham skipper Rice is set to make the cross-town switch after a prolonged race for his signature that saw rivals Manchester City enter the fray, only to pull out at the final round of bidding.
Arsenal had a number of bids rejected before their latest £105m offer met the Hammers' approval, although discussions are still ongoing over how that fee will be paid.
The proposed deal will see the Gunners fork out £100m for the player, followed by another £5m in bonuses in order to prise the Hammers skipper from the London Stadium, with the fee spread across multiple seasons.
According to Mail Sport, the fee was initially proposed to be paid across four years.
However, West Ham want the guaranteed part of the fee to be paid by the end of next year.
As Mail Sport's Sami Mokbel reported, a fee was agreed in principle on Wednesday afternoon, from which point the deal was formally believed to be ‘done’.
Personal terms with the player are not thought to be an issue, and indeed are considered to be a formality.
The 24-year-old is set to pen terms on a long-term deal at the Emirates worth around £250,000-a-week.

If the Rice deal does not go thru because of Sullivan's insistence on payment within 18 months, will Tchouaméni be a good enough alternative? Tchouaméni will be cheaper than Rice but lacks the EPL experience.

Lawyers involved as West Ham United wait for Arsenal on £105m Declan Rice transfer - Sky Sports
West Ham are now “ready” to sign off on the sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal but are waiting on lawyers at the Emirates, Sky Sports reports.
The £105million total package has been agreed, with the payment structure on the guaranteed £100m expected to see the money arrive in three lots by summer 2025.
Arsenal overcame Manchester City in the race for the Irons captain back on 28 June and now, almost a fortnight later, the final announcement is almost here.
According to the update from Sky Sports on Monday night (10 July): “West Ham are ready to sign the contracts for Declan Rice to become an Arsenal player.
“The Hammers are waiting for Arsenal’s lawyers to approve the final wording of the deal and, once that is done, they will sign and Rice will complete his move to north London.
“Arsenal are hopeful of completing the signing of Rice before the squad flies to the USA for their pre-season tour on Sunday.”
Wait goes on
It sounds like everything will finally be tied up this week which should come as a relief to all involved, since delaying the inevitable is only backing up other work.
Despite late suggestions that the Irons were prepared to abandon the deal over the payment discussions it always seemed too high-stakes for the move to fall through once the £105m fee was accepted.
And with the haggling over the details now done it is surely just a day or two now before Rice is unveiled as an Arsenal player.
That won’t come as any great joy to West Ham supporters, but since it has been on the cards for months now it is time for the club to look forward and bring in replacements.
James Ward-Prowse, Denis Zakaria and Tyler Adams are all in the Irons’ sights for a new-look midfield, with deals for other areas of the side on the cards as well.
So once Rice’s exit is signed off and the first payment from the Gunners arrives it should give the Hammers more room to start putting money on the table for incoming business.

Lawyers involved as West Ham United wait for Arsenal on £105m Declan Rice transfer - Sky Sports
West Ham are now “ready” to sign off on the sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal but are waiting on lawyers at the Emirates, Sky Sports reports.
The £105million total package has been agreed, with the payment structure on the guaranteed £100m expected to see the money arrive in three lots by summer 2025.
Arsenal overcame Manchester City in the race for the Irons captain back on 28 June and now, almost a fortnight later, the final announcement is almost here.
According to the update from Sky Sports on Monday night (10 July): “West Ham are ready to sign the contracts for Declan Rice to become an Arsenal player.
“The Hammers are waiting for Arsenal’s lawyers to approve the final wording of the deal and, once that is done, they will sign and Rice will complete his move to north London.
“Arsenal are hopeful of completing the signing of Rice before the squad flies to the USA for their pre-season tour on Sunday.”
Wait goes on
It sounds like everything will finally be tied up this week which should come as a relief to all involved, since delaying the inevitable is only backing up other work.
Despite late suggestions that the Irons were prepared to abandon the deal over the payment discussions it always seemed too high-stakes for the move to fall through once the £105m fee was accepted.
And with the haggling over the details now done it is surely just a day or two now before Rice is unveiled as an Arsenal player.
That won’t come as any great joy to West Ham supporters, but since it has been on the cards for months now it is time for the club to look forward and bring in replacements.
James Ward-Prowse, Denis Zakaria and Tyler Adams are all in the Irons’ sights for a new-look midfield, with deals for other areas of the side on the cards as well.
So once Rice’s exit is signed off and the first payment from the Gunners arrives it should give the Hammers more room to start putting money on the table for incoming business.

I know I've said numerous times now, I get it's a huge deal, but we seem to be the only club on earth who takes forever on their signings.

Arsenal fans are frustrated that their club haven’t announced the signing of Declan Rice yet – David Ornstein has now shared the latest on the situation.
The Gunners went into the market with three key targets – Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and of course, Rice. The German has been unveiled but the two others are still said to be waiting on the wings.
Arsenal fans are far from pleased and there are some concerns that the deal may be in doubt now. Ornstein, however, put all the fears to rest on Sky Sports last night (July 12, 10:51 pm).

Arsenal have never been ones to announce transfers very fast, but they really are taking their own sweet time with the Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber deals, aren’t they?
Reports have claimed for well over a week now that the Gunners have agreed everything to sign the two players. Both of them have even reportedly completed their medicals.
An official announcement, however, is nowhere to be found, and reports have emerged that West Ham are not too pleased with the delay.
Arsenal fans have been really worried since, but Ornstein has told all of them to sit back and relax because this deal is done!
He said: “My understanding is pretty much everything is done and dusted. For Arsenal fans, there’s nothing to be concerned about, they’re committing a record fee – £100 million plus £5 million in add-ons – the announcement can take time on a deal of this magnitude.
“There’s a lot to work through on various sides of the deal, but to my knowledge, it is on track and they’ll get the final stages done, then everyone will get this announcement they’ve been waiting for in due course!”

Ornstein has spoken and Arsenal fans can breathe a sigh of relief now.
It always did feel like a done deal, but the delay is just unusual and Gooners had every reason to be concerned about what could possibly happen.
Thankfully for them, everything is in place, and it will likely be announced at some point before the end of this week.
If all goes to plan, Rice should be involved when Arsenal take on the MLS All-Stars in the United States next week.
