The exclusive credit card payment system in place for fans wanting to buy tickets for the 2006 World Cup, is set to become the subject of an investigation by the European Union. It has emerged that certain fans are paying up to a 60% mark up due to the deal between MasterCard, FIFA and the German Football Association.

MasterCard sponsored the tournament to the tune of 15 million pounds and for that money they got exclusive rights to credit card sales, forcing holders of other credit cards to pay a hefty surcharge.

MasterCard deny any wrong doing.
