Here We Go Again

I suspect that a 'few' angry punters will be plotting this morning to turn up at Robert Green's house on his return from South Africa demanding refunds on their losing bets after his catastrophic howler against USA in Rustenberg last night.

From a simple shot from Fulham's Clint Dempsey, Green allowed it to pass from his hands and squirm over the line five minutes from half-time, and I wonder if Dempsey had a few bucks on the next drawing of the New York Powerball lotttery.

Well after all, Dempsey's luck was in last night.

Think of all the different bets that went up the swannee last night: England win 1-0, England 1-0 with Gerrard the 1st goal-scorer, England win etc etc etc. The 'bookies' must be in heaven this morning.

Just after Gerrard's goal, ITV's commentator said, "Well this could be fun." How right he was, but for all the wrong reasons!!

The omens are good though.

In 1966, England drew their first game against Uruguay 0-0 and went on to lift the trophy!! Pah Pah Pah!!

Yet again, we have all been 'suckered' into the hype, frenzy, euphoria and excitement of England's challenge and we have come crashing down to earth faster than a lead balloon.

We are flying our flags from our houses, our cars, we have raised our bunting over our castles, spent loads on beer and food and the other day I saw a 6ft high inflatable England footballer standing proud on the top of the roof of a living room bay window.

I EVEN bought a Vuvuzela - Red and White, complete with a Cross of St George flag.

The irony of last night though is that England didn't play that bad.

England just lacked the cutting edge converting the many half-chances that were created and to be fair to Green, he DID save us from complete embarrassment with a wonderful reflex save from Altidore's shot in the second-half.

In the other games played.

South Korea beat Greece 2-0, Sung and Park scoring the goals and Argentina beat Nigeria 1-0, Heinze scoring early on and Maradona was caught many times prancing around his technical area, looking like a hairy hobbit from The Lord of the Rings.
