Bye Bye WC2010

I have to admit once Ghana got knocked out of WC2010 by Uruguay in the quarters, my interest in the competition had completely waned. When England and Italy went very early, it was left to Ghana who, during the Uruguay game, had me on the edge of my seat and more animated than I had been since Chelsea won the League and Cup double last season. Not even England could produce this emotion. Even today I still feel extremely sorry for Asamoah Gyan who missed the last-gasp penalty and I still wonder how much more powerful Ghana could have been had they had Michael Essien available.

Ghana for me were the team of the competition and the Vuvuzela's were the noise of the competition.

Holland surprisingly turned out to be the 'thugs' of the tournament after Sunday's final. De Jong being the main protaginist with a high kung-fu kick into the chest of Spanish midfielder, Alonso.

So much for 'Total Football.'

Ex-Chelsea winger, Arjen Robben, missed two glorious one-on-one's to seal the win for the Dutch.

Fabregas missed a similar opportunity after coming on as a substitute and it was left to Iniesta (remember him?.... May 6th 2009 at The Bridge) to seal the victory for the Spanish after a bruising and physical encounter, to give Spain the World Cup adding to the European title Spain won two years before.

So we bid farewell to South Africa and we start to look forward to the coming Premiership season.

Chelsea reported back last Monday with the exception of the England misfits, Didier, Sal, Deco, Ferreira, Carvalho, Branislav etc etc and Chelsea kick-off their pre-season campaign with an interesting friendly against 'reprieved' Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
