Sunderland 1-3 Chelsea:Its Christmas and We DO Have a Plan B

On Matchday Live, Neil Barnett (the man you love to hate) announced in his usual pompous manner, that Chelsea were planning a switch in tactics but he couldn't say what the switch was in case anybody connected with Sunderland were listening in, or overhearing his telephone conversation to the studio.

As it turned out the Christmas lights were switched on and Chelsea changed from a sparkly diamond to a Christmas tree (well not exactly a sparkly diamond) but did those lights shine brightly at the Stadium of Light last night.

Chelsea dominated the play from start to finish. We dominated possession, terriority and eventually the score-line despite the fact that Sunderland took the lead with their only shot on goal.

Darren Bent scored Sunderland's goal after the ball bounced about Chelsea's area just like it did on Saturday before Hull took the lead.

Although Chelsea dominated, only Michael Ballack's effort on goal which was cleared off the line by Lee Cattermole can be considered as a definite shot on target.

Chelsea started the 2nd half as they ended the first, on top and within a few minutes of the 2nd half restarting, Ballack swooped in from close range to equalise.

Minutes later McCartney up-ended Dids and Super Frank scored from the penalty spot and then Deco wrapped up a super performance with Chelsea's third from 20 yards.

Ancelotti said that Deco wants to stay and Chelsea want him to stay. There are still fans reservations about Deco. He did start brightly last season and even after injury he faded badly, so lets not carried away again, despite Deco being named last night's Man of the Match.

Last night's formation improved the width that we sadly lacked against Hull on Saturday, but I can see Ancelotti switching formations and sticking to them as each game comes along, as for players I read somewhere that Ancelotti has said 'I will be the 2nd Tinkerman.'

Sunderland: Fulop, Bardsley, Ferdinand, Collins (c), McCartney, Henderson, Cana, Cattermole (Leadbitter 61), Richardson (Reid 83), Bent, Jones (Campbell 61)

Goal: Bent 17
Booked: Cattermole 28

Chelsea: Cech, Bosingwa, Ivanovic, Terry (c), A Cole, Ballack, Essien, Lampard, Kalou (Malouda 75), Deco (Shevchenko 86), Drogba (Sturridge 83)

Goals: Ballack 51, Lampard (pen) 60, Deco 69
Booked: Ivanovic 54, Drogba 74

Chelsea were awesome! In my 13 years as a STH at the SOL i have never seen a better performance from a team. Totally dominant for 90 mins, fair play. Think chelsea have what it takes to win the prem this year. SAFC Fan. FTM.

"It is born out of hypocrisy and fundamental insecurity. There have been two kids on the block for the past 12 years. Suddenly, there is a third and that one is threatening to be more successful than the others and they don’t like it." P Kenyon.

Well I was restricted to snatches of the match on a dodgy stop-start internet stream - but from what I could see it was indeed an impressive perfomance.

(Very good report by the way Since 66).
