'Efficient' Chelsea Get to Fifty Points

On the day that 'The Special One' apologised for his 'arrogance' when he first arrived at Chelsea, Shaun Wright-Phillips being omitted from the sixteen on his first return to Eastlands...

... Frank Lampard being taken ill during the warm-up and Man Utd contriving to drop two points at Birmingham, Chelsea extended their lead at the top of the Premiership to eleven points.

The only goal of the game came in the 79th minute when Joe Cole netted after David James had parried Eider Gudjohnsen's initial shot and the ball bouncing off 'Hello Hello Hernan Crespo' before finding its way to the man in form who joyously tapped in from close range. Now if I am not mistaken and unless my eyes are deceiving me I am convinced that Crespo played the ball with his hand as it bounced up from James' parry.

In a game of few chances and in bitterly cold and freezing conditions; Barton had a shot saved by Cech's feet after good work by Sinclair, Drogba headed just wide, Barton hit the post and the ball rolled across the line, but the ref had already blown for a foul, had the game ended 0-0 its doubtful whether both camps would have complained too much.

As Stuart Pearce said, 'The game had 0-0 written all over it." Jose Mourinho said 'A point would have been a positive result.'

One note of complaint about Didier Drogba as good as a front man as he is, I do wish he cuts out the 'dramatics' after he appeared to be pulled down by James in the first-half. There was some sort of contact, but Drogs 'Oscar' winning dive didn't fool ref Uriah Rennie. In fact Drogs was lucky not to have got himself booked.
