"It was a very calm meeting because they had to understand what I wanted. Only one change, only one man but in tactical terms, it was a big difference." as Jose continued.

Jose then revealed his tactical genius, "The question was which defender to take off. Del Horno is the left-footed one, he could bring something in the build-up, but at the same time, I know Ricardo and Gallas are the fastest ones and when you play three at the back, I prefer faster players."

"Didier was a bit lonely in the middle. Duff and Robben are different to Cole and Shaun who play more wide. Duff and Robben play more inside. Today I was looking for a lot of spaces surrounding Didier and I thought Gudjohnsen could be the man to give them a different situation," the Portuguese manager continued.

"It was not a problem for us to cope with three against three but after the third goal, I thought it was enough and I brought Paulo in to make the back four and control the game easily."

So what did Bolton's Sam Allardyce say about it all?

"We knew that they would come out with a little bit more tempo about them and try and move the ball forward quicker with the quality they’ve got but I expected my players to cope with that a little bit better than they did."
