Apology's for the lack of reviews over the last few weeks but time has been extremely tight with one thing or another. When I did find the time, it would have been too late and well out of date to publish. So there!
Where do we start with this weeks review? The Champions at The Valley? Wigan's mini unbeaten run? Owen's and Shearer's first goals for Newcastle? No!! Howabout the 'so-called' game of the weekend. Liverpool v Man United at Anfield. There has been alot written this week about 'boring' football, 4-5-1 and most of it has been written about Chelsea and some of it very critical, cutting and serious nonsense. No more was witnessed for the netural how boring the game at Anfield was. Two teams with high expectations, two teams afraid of losing. The only excitement in this drab affair was when the referee blew for full-time. The Barcodes travelled to Blackburn and were re-united with old boy Craig Bellamy. Ist goals for Alan Shearer and new signing Michael Owen gave the Barcodes a 2-0 lead before young Charles N'Zogbia added a quality third. Spare a thought for Sunderland's manager Mick McCarthy? No not really. If you can't defend a lead or increase it, then you deserve all you get. Leading 1-0 with about thirty seconds left, Hungary's skipper Zoltan Gera headed home to equalise for WBA in front of a two-thirds full Stadium of Light. New boys Wigan are on a mini-run. Another point picked up after going a goal down by Middlesbrough's Yakubu. Another ground where it was two thirds full. Two quick and early goals at Fratton Park saw Lua Lua put Portsmouth ahead in the 4th minute and then on-loan Jari Jarosik with his second goal in as many games equalised for the Birmingham boys. Bad boy Nicky Butt was sent off for Birmingham after aiming a kick in between the legs of Pompey's Dario Silva. Ouch! Man City hit the woodwork SIX times against Bolton at the very very almost full City of Manchester Stadium before falling to the sucker punch when Gary Speed scored from the penalty spot in the 90th minute. Villa got off to a good and early start when on-loan James Milner scored in the fourth minute, before sub Robbie Keane hit Tottenham's equaliser. This after Jermaine Defoe had missed a Spurs penalty. Finishing off in London. Starting in the West. West Ham continued their fine run with a 2-1 victory over Fulham with goals from Marlon Harewood (four in two) and a Tony Warner og, following a Harewood shot. Boa Morte scored Fulham's consolation. The Champions in South London put a dent into Charlton's fine 100% league record with a well deserved 2-0 at The Valley. Two class goals. The 1st from a Crespo header and the 2nd from an Arjen Robben shot gave the Champions a perfect 6 from 6 and eighteen points with twelve goals. No wonder the 'sold' out Chelsea end sang 'Thats Why We're Champions, That's Why We're Champions.' Interesting that the debate rambling on at the moment is that Chelsea have been criticised about the 'lack' of attendance during last week's European game against Anderlecht at The Bridge. Looking at the weekend's Premiership figures it seems that the only games 'sold out' were at Charlton, Fulham, Liverpool, Man City. Not knowing the attendance at tonight's Arsenal game, I can't see anything else but a sell-out, except for those 'awful' seats at the front left corner of the North Bank. Gooners know where I mean!! So come on then critics, start turning your attentions to the other members of the Premiership. Here at 50 Years over 100 Years, we shall be paying very close attention! And by the way, Arsenal won 2-0 with two set piece headed goals from Sol Campbell. So much for Arsenal's free-flowing beautiful attacking football. Still. As early as the season is, nine points in front of the Gooners and seven points in front of Man Ure is nothing to sniff at. 40 YEARS A BLUE
