If the story (slashed bonuses) in a certain red-top rag yesterday had any element of truth, then the players didn't show it as they took newly promoted WBA apart with six goals, setting a new Premier League record for the highest opening day result.

There maybe some element of truth in the story after Chairman Bruce Buck said, "It is a confidential matter, but the new rules from UEFA require a club to balance its books. Every club has to look at its expenses and adjust."

That wasn't the only thing that Buck spoke about.

In his programme notes he said that Joe Cole 'had joined a smallish club somewhere north of the M25' and Yossi had joined Chelsea 'from that smallish club north of the M25' creating lots of mirth and merryment amongst Chelsea fans.

Also I may have been privy to further cost-cutting measures as I witnessed most of the team arriving separately in their own cars, gathering in the Millenium Hotel for their pre-match meal and then walking across (through the gauntlet of eager fans) to the players entrance to prepare for the afternoon massacre.

In recent years the team have arrived together in a VIP coach from Cobham or an overnight hotel which would pull up right outside the players entrance.

I admit I was a little nervous about yesterday's game after our bad pre-season but once Malouda had given Chelsea an early lead with assistance from Scott Carson and Dids scoring right on half-time, the nerves settled.

Further goals in the second-half from Didier (2), Super Frank and Malouda gave Chelsea their emphatic win, following on from their title winning 8-0 battering of Wigan on the final day of last season and Wigan are Chelsea's next opponents at the DW next Saturday.

I am sure they are relishing our visit after their first day mauling by Blackpool......... NOT!!!
