The Press Association are reporting that Greater Manchester Police are investigating an allegation of common assault against Jose Mourinho as his team were boarding the team coach after last night's Champions League match between Manchester United and Inter Milan.

"Shortly before midnight last night a man reported that he had been punched in the face outside Old Trafford," according to a police statement. 

"We are investigating an allegation of common assault." 

Manchester United have been contacted by Police requesting CCTV footage of the area where the team coach was waiting. 

The ex-Chelsea manager was said to be in a good mood and had even sportingly shaking hands with Man Utd fans on his way to the bench before the game and later had his usual post-match chat and bottle of wine with Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Italian media however, are understood to have been very bitter and quite vitriolic in their criticism of Mourinho´s team’s performance.  At one point Mourinho was not prepared to accept any more such attacks and issued a warning: 

"If anyone wishes to criticise my team, they will have to fight me!" he said according to reports. 

Manchester United are making no comment and we await further reports for more information. 

Presumably if the Police want to interview Mourinho h would have to be interviewed on British soil. 

Update: 

Another Press Association report claims that Mourinho hit a taunting Man Utd fan: 

Angry Jose Mourinho allegedly thumped a Manchester United fan after his team was beaten at Old Trafford last night. 

The Inter Milan manager punched the United supporter who had goaded him as he left the stadium with the defeated team, it is claimed. The fan is alleged to have chanted "you're going home, you're going home" before the former Chelsea manager, whose team had just been dumped out of the Champions League, hit him. 

The fan, who has not been named, later went into Stretford police station, close to Old Trafford, to report the alleged attack.

So maybe it was a case of a fan gobbing off and then running to the Police afterwards?  

Violence is not the answer, but it does seem a bit lame to report this to the Police after possible deliberate provocation. 

Still, he would get his name in the papers, a possible tidy sum to boot and life-time bragging rights down the pub.

We now await to find out which report is correct.

I'd understand if Jose hit outAccording to eye- witnesses, the song that provoked Jose Mourinho, the Inter Milan manager, allegedly to strike a fan after Wednesday's defeat at Manchester United was: 'Go home, Mourinho.'

It was chanted repeatedly by a large group while he was trying to conduct a television interview. (The fan was from Cambridge, so no Mancunians were hurt in the making of this story.) Isn't that wonderful, though? 'Go home, Mourinho.'

A good job these cherubs were not employing a phrase that is a little, shall we say, stronger. A compound verb beginning with the letter F, perhaps. No, perish the thought. Fans never sing songs like that. They always tell unpopular personalities simply to go home.

Like that other song they sing: 'The referee's a rascal.' 'We thought he was going to sign autographs,' said witness Steven Mace, unemployed, from Doncaster, when Mourinho marched over to the crowd with a face like thunder. What an astute observer of human behaviour. After all, who wouldn't be filled with love for his fellow man at that moment?

You're the manager of Inter Milan, your team has just been knocked out of the tournament you were employed to win, you have done 15 rounds with the Italian press who all want you sacked and then you have conducted a live television interview with a mob in the background telling you to f*** off (sorry, to go home).

Who wouldn't then be bounding over with a cry of: 'Good evening to you all gentlemen, now form an orderly line, who should I make the first one out to?' And I abhor violence, too. So I am not saying that, whatever the circumstances, Mourinho should have slapped anybody. I'm just saying I'd understand if he has.
