Crazy Sending Off

Christmas came early for Roma in the Olimpico Stadium tonight and Mikel Obi played the chief role of Santa Claus as Chelsea re-opened up their registered charity shop 10203021. I thought days of helping out teams in trouble were over when we lost to Barnsley in the FA Cup quarter-final earlier on in the year, but after tonight's performance obviously not.

The thing is, Chelsea for thirty minutes dominated the game and played Roma off the park, just like we did two weeks ago at the Bridge.

The tide turned when Father Christmas Obi played a 'stupid' ball back to Deco who gave away a foul and was booked for his troubles.

Roma from the free-kick played the ball out to the right and from the cross, ex-Chelsea player Panucci ghosted in to put Roma 1-0 up.

Where was Terry, where was Alex and the rest of the defence?

Scolari tried to do a 'Mourinho' at half-time at it backfired big-time. Off went Malouda and Joey Cole and on came Drogba and Belletti and within three minutes Roma went 2-0 up as Vucinic blasted one in after a Roma break.

Ten minutes later Santa Obi got caught in possession deep into Roma's half when Vucinic got the ball.

Off he turned and ran straight into Chelsea's area with Santa Obi trailing in his wake and that was it Roma 3-0 up. Who would have thought that scoreline at kick-off time?

Chelsea peppered Roma's goal in those first thirty minutes, Doni saving from Super Frank and Deco on more than one occasion and it took Chelsea 75 minutes for Chelsea to score when captain JT popped up with a goal, that had it been disallowed, no-one would have complained, and that just sums up Chelsea's night especially what happened after those first thirty minutes.

JT scores v Roma

Ten minutes from time, Deco was shown a 2nd yellow card for taking a free-kick too early, and was subsequently shown a red card. Deco now misses the Bordeaux away game in three weeks time and with Bordeaux beating Cluj, our group is really really wide open.

Someone do me a favour, someone tell Big Phil to shut his mouth.

Twice his mouth in the press has caused us embarrassment: Liverpool: "We can become invincibles," and Roma: "I have booked this hotel for next May."

Yep! We definitely have a problem breaking down "park the bus" sides.

What´s the solution? 4-4-2 and launch balls into the box...or sit back more and try and draw them out to leave speaces behind? Would be a boring game like that but...

Drogba wasn´t fit enough unfortunately and mae little difference once he came on.

I get the feeling that the teams excellent run since the start of the season has gone to their heads - a VERY big wake up call in Rome last night and fortunately for us the result doesn´t have the damaging effect it could have done at a later stage of the CL.

You´re right about Scolari mouthing off - I was on the verge of doing a piece on it yesterday....

..and I don´t want to take anything away from Roma or Spalletti. People forget that they are a decent outfit (albeit suffering from various problems at the moment). They were only minutes away from becoming Serie A champions last season.

John Terry:

"If we are going to perform like that we are going to get nowhere near the Champions League Final. That's a simple fact.

“The final back in Rome is a big target and we want to come back here in May, but with that kind of performance and work-rate we have no chance.

“Overall it was disappointing that we didn't even fight. Even after going 1-0 and 2-0 down we didn't show the fight and desire that has got us here over the last few years.

“We just sort of strolled and came here thinking we were better than them, when clearly we're not. It was a terrible night for us really. We didn't get going. We knew they had been struggling for results the last few months and that the pressure was all on them.

“In the first five minutes you could see the tension in their team, but we didn't get out of first gear all night, which is really disappointing.

“Of late we have been getting results and performances because we have been working hard for each other and the movement has been there for each other.

“We have been getting the goals and destroying teams, but we came here thinking we can do it individually when we can't. Maybe this is the kick up the backside we needed.”

Typical JT admission. A man's man and a captain of all.

Can't imagine Carragher coming out with something similar, like how lucky the bin dippers were last night and not for the first time!!

Their luck will run out. As far as I´m concerned it´s the mancs we have to keep looking over our shoulder for.
