Torres: Chelsea Insist with Formal Offer

FERNANDO TORRES

By dixon9
June 11 2008

Today, Spanish football radio station Radio Marca have reported that Roman Abramovich has directed a formal offer of 62M euros (50M quid) for Fernando Torres to both custodians of Liverpool Football Club, Hicks and Gillett. This is a story that wont go away and will have Chelsea fans wondering who out of Drogba, Eto and Torres will be spearheading the attack at the Bridge next season.

The news of the Torres offer will no doubt hit the British press this evening/tomorrow morning.

.

Could the sale of Drogba/transfer of Etoó hold the key to the Torres deal given that Kenyon is apparently prepared to sell our Ivorian hitman to Milan providing that they withdraw their interest in Etoó?

Eto celebrates scoring his third goal

Would Drogba be prepared to sign for Milan given that he really wants to join Mourinho´s Inter (ouch!)?  If he did than that would put us up against Milan for Etoó…Or if Chelsea aren’t prepared to sell Drogba to Inter, could Drogba stay, electing to play Champions League football with Chelsea next season and new partner sought for him in either Torres or Etoó?

Benitez has already publicly stated that there is no way Liverpool will consider selling their star striker, however, Radio Marca report that one of Hicks and Gillett (Liverpool fans can probably guess which one!) DOES want to sell Torres, no doubt eyeing a 100% net profit on the deal.

What was also interesting is that Torres agents have been in touch with Benitez to ask if the Spaniard will definitely continue at Anfield next season - which must obviously confirm that Torres continuance at Liverpool depends on his manager.  You could argue that the two are linked anyway – if Torres left for Chelsea, this would almost certainly be “the straw that broke the camel’s back” for a manager that has taken a bit of a pounding already on his dignity since the arrival of the American owners.

The sale of Torres would also provoke the wrath of the Anfield faithful who have had just about enough of Hicks and Gillett.

They welcomed the takeover at first, affirming that “It’s been done in the right way!” “They will respect our traditions and our history!” (I often wondered what that would exactly involve from the American duo!), hurriedly drawing a contrast from the notorious Glazer takeover of Man Utd that had caused Liverpool fans such amusement previously.

Shortly afterwards they had to put up with unfortunate comments from Hicks and Gillett such as “We’ll do with Liverpool what we did with Weetabix” (referring to a business model) and “Chelsea! My God! They are the best in the world!”  but understanding the naivity of the American duo on our sacred sport, they let that go.

However, constant promises of transfer funding needed to give the Merseysiders the injection required to become a title challenging side have largely been broken and the purchase of Torres, which earned Hicks and Gillett brief respite, was apparently funded by a loan and not an investment from the owner’s pockets.

The sale of Torres must still be in the “unlikely” category but a moment of stupidity from the owners in selling Torres may not only cause the exodus of their manager.

So its true, Roman is owner AND manager. No wonder not even Spalleti will sniff at the "coaches" job at Stamford Bridge.

Still, the Chavs can dream of having a striker of Torres' ability and dignity if they want. Ain't going to happen like.

You could be right - by committee is the continental way....OR...the new manager has ALREADY agreed a shopping list with Chelsea.

And quite a few have had "qualms" about going to Liverpool havent they?

In fact, you could say the same about virtually any club on the planet - although presumably in the world you live in nobody can refuse Liverpool?

Even current players such as Gerrard (and possibly soon Torres?) have been making noises about lack of ambition for a while now havent they?

Ive said elsewhere that I beleive Torres future at Liverpool is tied to Benitez (therefore NOT necessarily Liverpool) - if H&G push Benitez one more time hell be off - with Torres in hot pursuit.

I didn't say we could get any player.

You're the one who said he'd have no qualms about playing for a team that's challenging. FFS, you get thicker by the day.

Steven Gerrard has been at this club for 20 years, I'm sure there are times when he feels the need of a new challenge. He realised Chelsea wasn't the club to give him it in the end though, and knocked you back.

I also said, Rafa has committed his future to Liverpool and it remains to be seen, should that situation change, where Torres would go or stay. I doubt very much that a lad like him would choose Chelsea.

Oh dear! Foot in mouth AGAIN eh Kate?!

Oh I think that IF Torres signed for Chelsea hed never look back.

As for Rafa, one more false move from Waldorf and Stadtler and hes off. Wouldnt be surprised if the only thing thats keeping him at Liverpool at the moment is that he doesnt want to miss out on a pay off by resigning.

Bless em.

The sad thing is the poor Chelsea boys think this is even slightly true. You cant attract a half decent manager to your club and you're bombing out the bes striker you've EVER had after bombing out the best manager you've EVER had.

No doubt these yanks are in Liverpool to make money. The shame is, if they were here to do it from selling players then Gerrard would have been sold already. They want this ground built, so the price of the club effectively instantly doubles. A 30 million profit on one player is pocket change to the sorts of money they're wanting, unfortunately.

So offer 50 million if it'll make your sad, pathetic fans believe that good players want to go there. Then maybe they wont be quite so disillusioned when you sign another Shevchenko smiling smiley

Peace out.

dixon9
12/06/2008 01:06
So, let me get this straight; good players dont want to go to Chelsea?

As for the Shevchenko comment its a bit rich coming from a fan whose club presided over spending around 110M under Houlier (how much would that equate to by todays standards?) on players that Benitez couldnt wait to get rid of.

How much would it equate to?!?! Erm 110 million maybe? In 6 years I dont think thats bad going to be honest. Thats, what, less than 20 million a season? You spent half of that on Shevchenko and Wright-Phillips alone!! No, I think I'm quite happy with the 'value for money' thing thanks very much (Sm154)

And no, good players dont want to go to you now. Sure, they did. They saw a fresh, young manager, albeit a bit arrogant, winning a lot of trophies. Unfortunately, they didnt see straight away that you're a rich mans plaything. And right now he's REALLY playing. Lets see, the last two players you signed were Anelka for 5 million less than Torres (good signing no?) and here's one I didnt know. Apparently in January, you signed some 10 million defender who hasnt played for you once!!!! So yeah, I think I'll stick to the you cant sign good players thing as well. Prove you can, and I'd happily retract that. Until then, naaaah. (Sm102)

You'd think you boys would have learnt by now. First you spend two summers trying to sign Steven Gerrard, and end up heartbroken (like a certain crying, spitting captain *cough*). Dont spend another summer trying to sign a player who you just cant. Go for Ronaldinho, hear he wants a move. And you'd only have Man City as a rival....oh wait, you wanted Mark Hughes didnt you. Okay erm.....Darren Bent?

Apologies in advance for proverbially 'pi**ing on your bonfire'. But Scolari. He's a very good international manager. No arguments. Never managed in European club football, doesnt speak a word of English and is 60 years old.

He arrives at a club that bombed out their greatest ever managed under a year ago, weeks after a guy was bombed out for taking them to their first ever Champions League Final (AHAHAHAHAHA on that from, to Vital Chelsea, from Nozzy (Sm126)). He arrives after they were turned down by Mark Hughes in favour of Manchester City. After Carlos Ancelotti, a man who just led the great Milan to FIFTH in Serie A, turned them down. After hopeless attempts to unsettle 'Tubby' Benitez. And god knows how many other managers have turned you down.

He doesnt tick a single box for a club aiming to be the best in Europe. So yeah, sorry for @#$%& on your bonfire.

Oh and just a quick heads up. No matter how often you're linked with Cristiano Ronaldo in the next few weeks (and it WILL happen), he wont go there either. (Sm102)

As for Scolari he's a proven International manager granted but he has very little experience in domestic football and absolutely no experience in English football. He was the "right choice" after Hughes, Ancelotti, Spaletti, Hiddink, Eriksson and various others had said "no thanks". Chelsea Fans you are the Real Madrid of 10 years ago, it started last season with the purchase of Sheva, overpriced and over-rated. Get ready for the new influx of "galacticos" and your marketing gimmick of a football club gets more like the Harlem Globe Trotters every season.

Oh dear! Good players dont want to come to us? And because we are a rich mans play thing? The previous summer there was a curb on spending so we only signed free transfers and then in January we signed Anelka (to cover for Drogba) and Ivanovic - we DIDNT NEED any more than that - not a case of players not wanting to come.

Ivanovic was purchased during the Russian pre-season and so was not fit. Whilst getting fit he got injured in training and didnt recover until when the season was about to finish.

Now if you really believe we are a rich mans play thing - then what impression do you think possible Liverpool players might have of Hicks and Gillett and what they are doing with Liverpool?!!!!! Even Benitez surely knows in his heart the clubs a shambles at the moment?

Your club did untold damage to english football through your support in Europe - and even then, in typical scouse Liverpool style you tried to blame somebody else (in that case CHELSEA). Now karma is taking its course and football is winning the day!

As for Gerrard it doesnt surprise me that hes kind in his autobiography - its the kind of bloke he is. Im sure deep down he wanted to go - but apart from the pressure from some sick fans he felt guilty ...and hed stayed with you out of loyalty, guilt....but even he must have a breaking point.

"Through the Darkness of Despair"

On arrival at Anfield he found a run down ground, where the wind rattled through the corrugated roof of all parts of the ground

He approached the board for money to buy a young Jackie Charlton, but was unsuccessful. He approached the board for money to buy the Scottish midfield dynamo Dave MacKay, but was unsuccessful. Shankly had been assured by the board that they were as ambitious as he was to improve the clubs standing, but this was not proving to be true.

Coming third in the second division was a fate so cruel it often brought tears to the eyes of fans, who wondered how long The Darkness of Despair would last. Shankly was already showing signs of desperation, he needed a benefactor who would not run away from signing cheques, they didnt need to fill them out, Bill could do that, all they had to do was SIGN THEM!

Fortunately for Bill, that time was not that far away. Eric Sawyer an accountant with Littlewood Pools had been nominated by John Moores (WHILST CHAIRMAN OF EVERTON!!!) for a place on the board and if Eric had one skill that Liverpool needed, it was his ability to sign his name. The Liverpool boss could now spend the summer of 1961 looking for the ammunition that would fire Liverpool back to the top league,

Liverpool History artcle on Liverpool web by a life-time Liverpool fan

At Liverpool the fans are monumentally sentimental, but they know their history and understand that money talks. The Shankly reawakening came only with the help of some Moores' money in the 1960s. Liverpool was one of the few clubs originally formed as a commercial venture.

Eh? Who's frothing at the mouth because some dickhead of a fan spouts rubbish? Instead of spending so much time flattering yourself, try looking for facts and figures to back up your allegations.

Gerrard had no need to lie, he rarely does, sometimes to the detriment of himself. He toyed with the idea of playing for Chelsea and then realised how hollow it would feel to win medals with a club he has no feeling for. Live with it, it's how most players feel about Chelsea.

'Your club did untold damage to english football through your support in Europe'

And yours was one of the main reasons all clubs got banned hypocrite.

Where you're concerned, the high moral ground is so easy to take. You are a liar who throws in a mountain of red herrings instead of the REAL proof to back up what you say like FACTS AND FIGURES, just to hide the fact that you got it wrong in the first place.

If anyone lives in a dream world it's you, and you lie and cheat your way through threads just to maintain that dreamworld. No-one is fooled Dixon, you're a prefect product of your shiiitty little club.

At least Blueblood had the guts and honesty to state it as it was when he said to me once, he didn't care how Chelsea won trophies, he'd followed them for so long without winning the big trophies he was just made up to see them win the title.

Well Blueblood probably felt the same as you then - I mean, you dont care about how your lot had the Moores money pumped into your club for 50 years? I mean look at you - you actually seem to be proud of it!

As for me being a "perfect product" of our "schitty little club" - at least we arent murderers like your lot (which I have to say, its exactly the type of club Id imagine some sour old vinegary soak like you supporting).

Heres a "few facts and figures" by the way (and keep on FROTHING AND FOAMING! LOL!

Moores Family being one of the richest familes in Britain - earnt with Littlewoods Pools - same family bankrolling your club EVEN when Moores was chairman of Everton(!!!!).

Moores putting his chief acountant from Littlewoods Pools, on the Liverpool board in 1961.

I can understand that a product of a shiiity little club like Chelsea would have no sense when it comes to facts and figures so here's how it works.

Me: Chelsea have bought their trophies since being taken over by a sugar daddy.

Dixon: Liverpool bought their trophies by Shankly being given 2 million quid by their Moores chairman, that's how Liverpool got their trophies.

Me: Moores has only been chairman since the 90's.

If Shanks was given 2 million, could you tell us what it was spent on? Which players we bought with it, which clubs did we massively outspend plastic Chelsea style?
In reality Shanks only spent 600,000 net over 13 years, could you explain your figures please?

Dixon: And Shanks was criticised because he was buying players in and not playing locals.

Me: That is complete and utter bollix. These local players were part of Shanks first title winning squad.

Cally
Hunt
Byrne
Lawler
Smith
Ferns
Jones
Moran
A'Court
Lewis
Melia
Morrisey
Wheeler
Banks
Carlin

Now could you explain where the 2 million went. Which players were bought. Which clubs we massively outspent?

Dixon:

This is where you back up that Shanks was given 2 million by showing us where it went. Not who said what. Not what fans or pundits were saiying/said. That's all immaterial.

FACTS AND FIGURES ARE THE ONLY TRUTH. NOW SHOW SOME GUTS YOU SPINELESS IDIOT.

You're a completely spineless nobody Dixon who runs away from his own statements time and time again. Not just on Liverpool but Arsenal and United fans have sent you running away with your tail between your legs lots of time......but anyway, if you can't offer the proof of facts and figures your claims have no basis and Chelsea are a sugar daddy run club who buy their trophies.

Torres.

Who exactly is it that knows he's not happy in Liverpool? Certainly not the lad himself who has spoken many times of his enjoyment of life here. Certainly not the Spanish press who interviewed him on a weekly basis during the season and asked him questions our sad journos haven't got the guts to and each times he speaks glowingly of his move to Liverpool and how he loves where he lives.

Looking at the article we see it's from the mail and a journo who knows sleazebag Kenyon enough to know when he's back from holiday and a good proportion of his articles are about Chelsea. This certainly sounds like a sleazebag fed, word for word, article because the lad himself has always spoken very highly of the place he left Spain for.

Only last night....

Question- The English press have published that Chelsea will offer 60m for you. You don't see yourself leaving for London now, do ya?

FT- No, no. Not at all. I hope that we can take that small leap forward next season. We were a step away from reaching the CL final this season and I think that with a few improvements we will be able to achieve it.

From Spanish interviews with actual quotes instead of sleazebag make ups.....Oops, making things up, that rings a bell.

If you came back to Spanish football and to one of the big clubs, which one would you choose?

- To be honest, I dont plan on going back to Spanish football, although things can always change in the future. I would love to stay in Liverpool for many years. Whats clear to me is that I wouldnt like to go to R.Madrid, I would never join them. My idea is that if I ever had the chance to join Real Madrid then I would also have the option to join some other great club and I would always choose those over them.

And why did you choose Liverpool?

- There were many offers from big clubs. Some didnt get any more serious than a passing interest, but we knew this was a serious one from the go and that we would go through with it. I was told about it and Rafa called me personally and I decided to accept the offer. My Spanish team-mates spoke marvels of this team, the club, the city. Its a club where everyone works together and challenge to win silverware. They hold the same values I was interested in, and thats why Im very comfortable here.

Is the daily life very different compared to Madrid?

- Here, people respect you in the street, you cant even compare that. People greet you from the distance as if they knew you from the neighborhood your whole life, but they rarely approach you. Theyre much more respectful than people in Spain and you can have a social life without any worries, nobody bothers you. Its one of the things that the players here always highlight as an advantage, life is much calmer. And its true.

Anfield is amazing

- The acoustics are fearsome. Its the typical English ground, it looks bland from the outside, but its very enclosed and the acoustics are fantastic. That puts a magnificent pressure on you to play well. Its also very special because of all the history. Now the capacity is too small and theyre going to build a new stadium. But Anfield is so special that theyre not going to tear it down, theyll build a path to the new stadium

Liverpool is a religion

- More than a business its a sentiment. People care much more about the history of success and misfortunes at the club than about money or the market.

In that aspect it is similar to Atleti

- Yes, I think both peoples have a lot of things in common. The pride of supporting your team, win or lose, always. Feeling proud and taking it to the limit.

Are you familiar now with the famous quotes from Bill Shankly?

- Yes, I know that hes very important in the history of Liverpool. He said that no player should feel more important than the team because the club is above all. And thats how it is. Their most important players and managers past and present are very grateful of having worn the red shirt. And whether they were better or worse, people always greet them like they were family.

The box was filled with former players the other day

- The former players have a close relationship with the supporters. People are very friendly, very warm, humorous and very helpful, and it doesnt matter if youre a legend or a newcomer. When you walk around the city you get to know everyone. People try to speak Spanish to me.

How are your parents dealing with their sons exile?

- Theyre fine now, at first not so well, I was leaving home. Now they have visited me, gotten to know the city, and theyve seen that Im well and theyre happy for me. Liverpool is close for them. They can come any time they want in an instant.

Do you read the English press?

- Not much. The tabloids are not given any importance, theyre not very trustworthy. Ill read them, more than anything, for the language. And youd rather not read them, that way you can live in reality.
Its a lot calmer here for me. I also have more time and a better structure. Im in a city where I can go out to a coffee shop and people dont overwhelm me, I dont feel pressured. I can take a walk without being reminded that Im a footballer every step of the way. That allows me perform better on the pitch and enjoy it more. I also perceive that Im on a team that the opponents respect. Just like the Atleti teams I used to follow as a kid, who would go out to win no matter the opposition or the scenario, they were respected and fearedthings that I never felt there as a player unfortunately. I feel that here.

But the owners are not the supporters

- But the whole thing doesnt exist. Its all a lie. Benitez is not going to leave and they wont sack him. Results aside, I dont see it happening. I cant even imagine it. I dont think English football has lost its patience like it seems. And the newspapers here are not very trustworthy. Thats why they have less effect. Ive seen interviews being published that Ive never done. They just make them up.
Liverpool are the English club with the most titles, with more mystic, but it wouldnt seem like it. I didnt know they were so big before I got here. Perhaps they havent been able to sell themselves so well. Or perhaps its not in the interest of some people in England that it is known. Because England is London and thats it.

How many times have you said to yourself: Why did I leave?

- Not once.

I think you'll find that was aimed at your owner who has eyed us with envy every time he's come to Anfield.
