We expected and deserved nothing less after the weekend’s embarrassment up in Yorkshire against Barnsley. This 6-1 demolition of strugglers Derby orchestrated largely by Joe Cole and Lampard now puts us five points behind the Woolwich with a game in hand and just as importantly, our goal difference has been given a much needed boost.

Lampard will probably get most of the headlines tomorrow due to his four goal haul although for me the man of the match would be “He’s here!  He’s there!  He’s every f—king where!  Joe Cole! Joe Cole!”

The England midfielder (or is it winger?) scampered over nearly every blade of the Stamford Bridge grass and caused general havoc in the packed out Derby defence.

Ashley Cole looked excellent, Carvalho and Terry solid as usual and the subs in Drogba, Shevchenko and Essien all seemed anxious to make their mark  - although the latter seems uncomfortable when given the holding role and was unfortunate to play a role in the only goal conceded.

Besides the result, the refreshing aspect of this performance was the attitude of togetherness amongst the squad and the fighting spirit displayed on the pitch when they could have easily took the foot of the pedal just after the start of the 2^nd half. 

Lampard scored the first from the spot after what looked like a fortunate penalty and from there on, the Derby players appeared to have fallen into instant resignation – losing is a habit and sickness which is so difficult to get out of when it is so firmly entrenched in the psyche.

Just before the end of the 1^st half Kalou inevitably made it 2-0 when Carroll and a Derby defender performed their own mini version of the Keystone Cops after panicking in Anelka´s onrushing presence.  Carroll slid the ball out to clear and Kalou reacted instantly by planting the ball into an unguarded net from 25 yards.

In the 2^nd half, on 57 mins Joe Cole did his stuff and crossed for Lampard to make it 3-0 for Lampard´s second and after neat work between Anelka and himself.

Soon Anelka was through on goal, his placed albeit slightly tame shot was well saved by Carroll but Joe Cole was on hand to stroke home the rebound.

Lampard got the 5^th and his hatrick after some slaloming on the edge of the box, and planting his shot low to the corner leaving Carroll wrong footed.

Then Lampard again bagged his 4^th to make it 6-0 with another shot after a deep run.

Derby were to score though!  Miller attempted to thread through for the Derby forwards and his pass was helped on by Essien which gave the ball enough deflection to fall perfectly in the path of Jones who finished with aplomb.

The travelling Derby fans celebrated with exaggerated and ironic enthusiasm such is their plight and Chelsea supporters applauded them – nice touch.

The result serves to keep any chance we might have of grabbing a 3^rd league title in four years – a win away at Sunderland would make the match against Arsenal at home even more intriguing.

Had we scored ten Paul Jewell wouldn't had minded - he said

"Chelsea are a terrific team it was like a heavyweight champion against an amateur lightweight."

We should have scored ten and 10 would not have flattered Chelsea and Frank became the first midfield player to score FOUR goals in a match.

In the first five minutes we could have been three up and Frank's goals averaged one every ten minutes, between the 28th and 72nd minute

Goal difference isn´t that bad now - need to try and get a couple at least away to Sunderland which will be difficult as they wil fight to the last.

Interesting to see how that Kenwyn Jones plays against us - reminds of a young, not the finished article, Drogba.
