Wolves have inexplicably been hit with a £25,000 Premier League fine for fielding a 10 man changed weakened team which saw Man Utd gratefully lap-up the three points and a 3-0 win at Old Trafford in December. The fine is suspended but the possibility of Mick McCarthy repeating the move when they face Chelsea this weekend would appear to be nil.

"The Premier League Board has issued Wolverhampton Wanderers FC with a suspended £25,000 fine after deciding that the team fielded in their league fixture against Manchester United on 15 December 2009 was not full strength and therefore in breach of Rule E20. 

"The board also deemed that the club had failed to fulfil its obligations to the league and other clubs in the utmost good faith and was therefore in breach of Rule B13.  

"The board considered submissions from Wolverhampton Wanderers FC and had sympathy for the explanation submitted by the club in relation to similar cases from previous seasons.  

"However, the board ruled that this case could be differentiated from the other matches cited and that disciplinary action was warranted."

“Differentiated from the other matches cited…” because these clubs have larger squads of generally better players.  But it´s not Wolves fault that they cannot afford a large squad of more expensive players - and they have to use their resources as they see fit surley?  And what about impartiality of opinion by Scudamore?  He is allowed to actually say that some clubs have weaker players than others?

So Man Utd get away with an easy 3 points whilst we will have to face a battling, relegation placed side – presumably at full strength. 

"In coming to this decision the board also wants to put clubs on notice that any future rule breach of this nature would be subject to a disciplinary commission that would have available a full range of sanctions,” continued the Premier League statement.   

A bit late in the day for that isn’t it?!  Liverpool received no punishment or warning for making 9 changes to their normal squad whilst playing Fulham a few seasons ago as they had a Champions League match coming up (against us!) and so did Man Utd themselves when facing Hull City in their last game of the previous season – a match that could have affected the final relegation places – as they had the CL final to play. 

It would seem that if you are an established member of the old-guard such as Liverpool or Man Utd then you can get away with it – and the timing of the fine also ensures that we will not get the same luxury afforded to Man Utd by Wolves – a point that directly affects the race for the title. 

All clubs are equal – but some are more equal than others.

I wonder how many rows McCarthy had with the players he dropped for that game.

As far as i am aware if a club registers a squad of professional players it is free to play any 11 from those registered how can Wolves be penalised for fielding players which the Premier League allowed them to register. In future the League can dictate to clubs which players meet the standard required to turn out in matches and they might as well pick the teams for the managers. As for United however much they may be despised they can only beat whoever is put in front of them therefore how can they be penalised for that.

Of course, Man Utd shouldn´t be penalised - but the PL have effectively given them an advantage in the title race this season by announcing the fine now. It would have been fairer to make this announcement at the end of the season.

regarding the quote attributed to slimey Pete: is he talking about Ciddy? He's wrong because there has only been one kid on the block for the past 18 years apart from a couple of times when United's domination was rudely and briefly interupted by Blackburn, l'@#$%& and the Chav$.

Is it McCarthy's fault that the fixture list didn't suit Chelsea? Is it the FA's fault for not punishing Wolves at the end of the season to suit Chav$ki? Perhaps next time Drogba has one of his tantrums we should ban him at the end of the season and then he won't miss any games. Brilliant. Never been done before but if it helps Chav$ki to a desperately covetted title it should be done.

It´s the PL´s fault for favouring the likes of certain bigger clubs by refusing to take action against them. The punishment of Wolves has ensured that McCarthy won´t play a such a weak team again as he did against Man Utd - but the Man Utd match (obviously) has already been played with a nice comfortable 3-0 win.

If you cannot see that therefore the PL have handed Man Utd an advantage in the title race then I don´t really know what to say to you...

It is very likely that ManUre would have beaten Wolves had McCarthy played his strongest team - McCarthy's decision just ensured the victory!!!

I feel sorry for those Wolves fans that travelled to OT that night - the West Midlands like the rest of the country is struggling economically and those Wolves fans should have got more value for their hard earned!!!

Sure - but they won 3-0. Imagine we lose the title on goal difference?
