The media report that Chelsea are maintaining interest in hit-man David Villa and may make “an official bid” for the player. Barcelona and Real Madrid are also trying to obtain the signature of the Valencia forward.

The words “official bid” are a bit misleading.  According to the press we have already had a bid of €43 million (£37.5m) turned down – was this an “unofficial” bid then?!  And if it was unofficial then it couldn’t be formally accepted?  Still, maybe I’m being too pedantic.  I suppose the offer could have been during “informal” conversations and we were told that an amount of that nature would not be accepted.

After Spanish journalist Guillem Balague claimed that we had this first offer turned down, Abramovich is now supposedly mulling over making an offer of €45.7 million (£40m) for Villa.

Valencia need to offload a couple of key players in Villa and Silva due to huge debts accrued after the unfortunate timing of the beginning of construction of their new stadium during the economic crisis.  “Los Che” currently have debts of around £400m.

I don’t feel particularly optimistic that we will acquire 27 year-old Villa.  He and his family want to remain in Spain and the idea of having a player – no matter how good he is – playing in London whilst his family are miserable isn’t a mutually beneficial mixture.  Remember what happened with Crespo?

It looks as if we may be signing Sturridge – if so, he along with Anelka and Di Santo should be enough to cover for the period during the African Nations etc when Drogba will be away.

If we are to make a “marquee” signing then it could be a player in another area of the pitch.  Ribery seems to be on the radar but the media seem to think he’ll end up at Real Madrid - ditto Kaka.  Zhirkov appears to be on his way to the Bridge and at around 18m that’s hardly cheap.

If the “big” player signings are just too ridiculously expensive or not viable then save the money – signings like Zhirkov are more than enough to strengthen the side.  The question is, from Ancelotti´s point of view, is it imperative that we do sign a Kaka, Pato, Ribery etc to form his vision of football?  According to his autobiography, this would seem to be the case.

David Villa, Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo have already joined Real Madrid, just a matter of time until its all announced. Fed up of little clubs like chelsea and villareal thinking they can compete with us. Champions League: Real Madrid - 9 chelsea - 0. League Championship: Real Madrid - 31 chelsea -3.
