Russian media claim Zhirkov has signed for Chelsea

The Russian media claim that Chelsea have already signed Yury Zhirkov from CSKA Moscow. The “Russian Ronaldinho” has been a long term target for Chelsea and has apparently signed a four-year contract.

Zhirkov is extremely adaptable on the left-hand side – he can play defensively, in midfield or as an out an out winger.  His presence will serve to keep Malouda on his toes and should also work extremely well with Ashley Cole.

The report claims that we have paid around £18.6m for the Russian.

"Yury [Zhirkov] has signed the contract with Chelsea just a day or two ago," the media claim.

"He will join his new team this summer."

The Mirror have printed a “Ten things you should know about Zhirkov” with a couple of videos:

Zhirkov unaware of any offer but interested:

And Zhirkov insisted his move to Chelsea was not a done deal, adding:

'I can say now that, if it was my decision, I would choose Barcelona, but this does not mean I would automatically decline Chelsea's offer. They are a great club and it would be a dream for anyone to play for them.'

Zhirkov had already warned he would not join Chelsea if he was just considered a squad player to cover for Ashley Cole and Florent Malouda, but he clarified:

'There is a difference between "playing" and "sitting on the bench". Even at Barcelona, I wouldn't want to do the latter.'

So how do we read this? Is he saying “I prefer Barcelona full stop” or “I prefer Barcelona because I may end up on the bench at Chelsea” ???

And there´s some mischief about Malouda being offered to Barcelona....

I would have thought not - but the was something
Hiddink said a few weeks before the end of the season "There will be a few players sold - and there are some that have chosen to perform only towards the end of the season" (something like that) which made me think of Malouda.

Would be a shame though - unless its a strategy to leave the way clear for us with Zhirkov?
