Chelsea 1-1 Barcelona: Travesty, Injustice, Disgraceful!!!

HAPPY ARE YER???

May 7 2009

As Chelsea fans come to terms with the travesty at The Bridge last night, you can visualise the smug contented expression on the face of a certain Michel Platini - UEFA President - the same self-centered one who publicly announced that HE didn't want another All English Champions League final.

Platini. You got your wish, but at what cost? How much did last night's appointment of a WEAK referee from Norway (who was smuggled out of the country last night) cost UEFA the respect of the World's Footballing Associations?

Mr Norway

At the moment UEFA's stock is laughable. We all know since Mr Abramovich took over at The Bridge and Chelsea's first qualification to Europe's Premier Cup competition, UEFA have done everything in their power to STOP Chelsea claiming the top prize...... and last night was no exception.

I can't condone Drogba's and Ballacks actions last night, but I firmly understand their frustrations.

Angry Dids

FOUR clear penalties denied - Malouda and Drogba in the first-half and in the second-half, the two handballs by Pique and Eto'o - but I defy ANYBODY to say that they wouldn't have had done the same thing in under the same circumstances.

Not only did Mr Norway get it wrong for the penalty shouts, he also got it wrong when he sent off Barca's Abidal after Anelka tripped over his own feet.

In his defence (only slightly) it was the Assistant on the East Stand side of Stamford Bridge who flagged for the offence and from my view in the Shed End Lower, I was watching him waiting for him to indicate a penalty, because I couldn't tell whether the foul was inside or outside the area.

As it turned out it was outside the area and the free-kick was wasted along with other Chelsea chances.

I can understand Chelsea's frustration, they were the better team last night but again they chose to defend when they really should have finished Barca off, negative tactics yet again even with a man up!

I disagree those 2 handballs were pens, just because you hit the hand does not mean its a pen. The ref has to calls the ones where he feels the player intentionally played the ball with his hands. Go watch the replay of the 2 handballs, Pique nor Eto did not swing their arms to the ball...the ball hit their arms that were already out. There are LOT of those types of handballs that do not get called and sometimes unjustly they do.

Moulda's and Drogba's pens were legit pens I think. Again however I will point out that Henry's jersey got pulled as well in the box in the first leg that was not called. Just because there were calls for pens does not mean all the damn calls were pens!

Chelsea paid a price for negative football and a bad ref but so did we in the first leg!

Good piece sir!

Unfortunately, we will receive little support from the usual suspects - The laws of the game being correctly applied as a principle will be cast aside as their natural unadulterated hate for Chelsea will overcome this.

What happened last night was an absolute disgrace, We know that it should be us running out onto the turf in Rome and not Barcelona, but European Football was made a joke last night.

A piece of football as a true sport died last night and as I mentioned elsewhere, a piece of my love and respect for the game has died also. At this moment in time I don´t feel any anticipation or excitement for our match against Arsenal at the weekend, the FA Cup Final or any other game this season.

Negative tactics and we still should have won by three clear goals.

What we should probably do in the future is just dispense with the idea of the referees applying the laws of the game to this supposed "Sport" we call modern European football.

Let´s just have a vote at the beginning of the season among the baying plebian masses on who their favourite team is or who they feel plays the most attractive football - we could even slip in a "team you most hate" category to eliminate those clubs for ease of collation.

Whichever two sides have the most votes could contest the "final" and the majority would be happy.

It wouldn´t be football the sport of course - but who cares anyway? Certainly not Platini or Blatter...nor many others.

No mate. This one will take a long time to heal. I certainly won´t have the same interest in European football for quite some time - there needs to be a clear out in UEFA and this rediculous influence that the old guard of European football clubs have over UEFA and UEFA over the referees committee.

you mention "respect" dixon in an earlier post.

From the pictures i watched on the box last night i didn't see too many chelsea players showing "respect" either.

As i've said earlier, ya ye were hard done by on 1 or 2 occasions but Barca had a player sent off for F*ck All and he will mis the Final over it. If anyone had a right to bit*h at ref last night it was him.

Its hard enough for any Chelsea fan watching the game on TV to take - being there was even worse.

In all my many many years watching Chelsea SINCE 66, last night was THE worse ref performance I have ever seen and there have been many.

You could just see the goal coming no matter how late it was, you just knew that Barca were going to score. For a so called super team, Barca were rubbish.

ONE shot (i know thats all it takes) on target ALL night.

Utd should rinse 'em

hang on 66 lad, i wanna take issue with that shots on target thing,

the fact barca only had 1 shot was down to chelseas superb battling performance in defence and there 8/9 defenders, any team would struggle to breach that, the work ethic cfc showed was great and and tired legs cost you(and ref)

remember my team v spurs, 2 late goals to break our hearts, our players dead on there feet.
i dont think you can take much from the fact they had one shot tbh, even though a few more should have hit the target.(Sm160)

Excellent post from another blog on last nights travesty:

Prior to last night, and as a neutral, I would have agreed with your 'dream final'. But as sports fans, in any context, above all else we crave legitimacy. None of us will know what the result would have been last night had the officials got any of the key decisions right. But my gut instinct is that Chelsea would have won, Barcelona not coming back from at least a 2-0 deficit.

It is all very well people stating that Barcalona played the 'better' football over 180 minutes, but when they impede Chelsea's progress four times in the penalty area, unpunished, then we have to conclude that it was probably not Iniesta's fabulous late strike that decided the result, but the disastrous performance of the officials, self confessed after the match according to your paper.

The sad result is simply that, for many neutrals, Mr. Ovrebo and his colleagues have stripped the legitimacy from the final in Rome, rendering it a potentially 'fraudulent' event. Whatever the result, we will ask the question "who would have won if Chelsea had been here?". And that is sad for all football fans, including Barcelona's.

Were you robbed? No you should have had 2 maybe 3 pens but Barca shouldn.t have had Adidal sent off and should have had a penulty at Nou camp it was 2 @#$%& refs not 1 and as you spent 90mins in barca kicking there players and got away with your anti-football you got what you deserved. Harsh but true

Like you, I felt that the Abidal red was wrong – but then he admitted that he had fouled Anelka:

“I was defending against Nico [Anelka], but as I was the last defender and the referee thought I fouled him, dismissing me is normal,” Abidal said.

“If I let Nico run towards goal then he scores the second one and it is over, so we can say it is a good foul. I sacrificed myself. It is always disappointing to reach the final without being able to feature.”

So I watched it again. What happens is that he catches Anelka who then running past him can’t keep his balance for a few paces and then actually trips himself.

The linesman flagged for the offence by the way – the ref then gave it.

Fair enough Dixon9 i can't argue with the player if he admits himself. I thought both refs were awfull i didn't think it was as 1 way (against chelsea) as it's made out to be. What annoys me most is no matter which english team are playing the press seem to forget anything that goes for them but crucify any decision against.

dixon9
09/05/2009 17:01
The press have pretty much crucified and gone against us before and after the match (with the exception of Winter and Samuels). They´ve got what they wanted - a Man Utd Barca final and they don´t care how they got it.
