After sixty-six minutes with Chelsea 4-0 up, naturally HUSS wants to save the legs of Super Frank and Super Dids, scorers of three of Chelsea's goals. On came Anelka and Deco and twenty four minutes later Chelsea won the game 4-3 by the skin of their teeth and Bolton could have equalised with the last kick off the game.
Lampard's departure meant Chelsea lost the midfield and with Dids departure, Chelsea lost the 'physical' presence although Anelka did have a shot cleared off the line, albeit a weak one.
On Saturday 14th October 1978 Chelsea played Bolton at The Bridge and Bolton were leading 3-0 with fifteen minutes to go. If my memory serves me right a certain Sam Allardyce was playing that day for Bolton. Chelsea sent on Clive Walker as sub and within fifteen minutes Chelsea had won the game 4-3.
Chelsea took the lead five minutes from half-time through Ballack and this was after Bolton caused Chelsea some concern. Within fifteen minutes of the second-half resuming Chelsea were four goals to the good, with Drogba scoring two and Lampard scoring a penalty.
Then came the start of Bolton’s fightback – credit to them – they never gave up and O’Brien poked home from close range, Basham hooked in one right on the line and with Terry and Carvalho absent without leave Taylor headed over a stranded Cech.
The last twelve minutes were fraught and had plenty of heart attack moments especially with the last kick of the game when Bolton almost equalised. Cech flapped around like a shot seagull and no doubt Liverpool will take encouragement that if Bolton can score three at The Bridge, why can’t they?
Tuesday will be one interesting night!!!
Hiddink’s reaction, “It’s a typical English game leading 4-0 and waiting for the fifth because we were playing on one goal, but all of a sudden we got very sloppy and were not winning any balls defensively, the midfield and front players as well, and conceded three goals in nine minutes.
“Of course I tried to think about my own activities as well but if you are 4-0 up with 20 minutes to go, and not in defensively key positions making the substitution, then I don’t think it is the cause – we were too relaxed.”
