Tottingham 1-0 Chelsea; Its A Shocker at The Lane

SHOCKING

What a terrible week it has been for all at Chelsea Football Club in games at various levels against Tottingham. Last Monday the reserves were trounced 4-0. Yesterday morning at Cobham the Academy were beaten 5-0 (although the U16s won 3-1) and yesterday afternoon the first team succumbed 1-0. Not a good day, not a good week.

I wrote in the match preview that the title was out of Chelsea's reach. After yesterday's shocker at The Lane, even with the Ure being beaten and having two players sent-off, our chance, one of many wasted this season to catch-up, the big trophy has finally disappeared over the horizon.

Jason Cundy

Not having a ticket for yesterday's game, I decided to spend the afternoon in the company of the lovely Gigi Salmon and Chelsea Legends Tommy Langley and Jason Cundy on Chelsea TV (giving up for one afternoon the company of Jeff Stelling and the boys).

Even though Jason Cundy's career included a stint at The Lane, he is Chelsea through and through. His enthusiasm for the club at all levels is unconditional and to see him squirm at the opportunities that Chelsea failed to take yesterday, he is 100% US.

Tommy Langley is the same. He was as agitated as Cundy and fidgeted in his chair and had Chelsea scored in the last seconds when Alex's header hit the bar, poor Gigi would have had to scrape Cundy and Langley off the ceiling after scraping herself off first no doubt!.

Hiddink's reaction, "The team had not appreciated enough the need to extinguish the fire when they felt the kitchen was hot."

He said, "We talked about it at half-time, that they would come from the start, and we emphasised on this.

"But it was very sloppy defending for the goal, and then the team woke up and we took over. But we told them to get through the tough period in the first 10 minutes before half-time, and then we could get through the game. But we didn't and that is very disappointing."

Tottingham: Gomes, Corluka, Woodgate, King (c), Assou-Ekotto (Lennon 90+3), Zokora, Jenas, Palacios, Modric (O'Hara 86), Bent, Keane (c)

Scorer: Modric (50)
Booked: Palacios, Modric

Chelsea: Cech, Bosingwa, Alex, Terry (c), A Cole, Essien (Malouda 75), Ballack, Lampard, Belletti (Quaresma 60), Drogba, Anelka

Booked: Belletti, Ballack

Sickening to lose to them. The trouble is you hardly ever hear from them UNLESS they win and then they all start crowing!

Not enough urgency in the first half - very unlucky in the second with some great opportunities (Terry, Alex, Drogba...and the agonising Malouda at the end) spurned or very well saved by Gomes. Also a pen shout from Lampard´s header.

First loss under Guus. Don´t want to be too critical but I would say that he got it wrong putting Belletti out wide when Quaresma was sitting there. As soon as Quaresma came on they had to double-up on him (or even 3 watching him sometimes). I hope we sign him in the summer.

Spurs did defend very well though and its typical of them in recent seasons to really raise their game for us (watch them lose to a mid to lower placed club very soon).

Bollix!
