Super, Super Frank

Chelsea fans in the Matthew Harding Stand had slighty more reason to celebrate than most at Stamford Bridge yesterday. On fifteen minutes, Michael Ballack put the Blues ahead, and it was the first Chelsea goal scored at that end since December 9th when Drogba scored Chelsea's winner against Cluj.

Chelsea set-off like a train.

They threatened to de-rail Ipswich's cup hopes quickly as they created and spurned a whole host of chances.

Malouda forced Wright into a smart save in the first minute, Super Frank was wayward with a couple of shots and Ballack was the same too.

Super Frank chipped a pass into Ashley Cole, who played a low cross back into the box and Ballack was on hand to sweep the ball into the net. This you thought would set the catalyst for more first-half goals. But NO.

In true Chelsea style, the Blues took their foot of the pedal and allowed the Championship side back into the game.

It was a first-half of two halves. First Chelsea dominated and then Ipswich took over and on thirty-four minutes Ipswich equalised.

Chelsea showed their defensive frailities again as the ball was played into the box, as the ball pinged around the area, nobody in Blue took control and Alex Bruce was on hand to stab the ball into the net.

Scolari had been criticised by the fans and media alike for continually playing Deco when he wasn't contributing anything to the team, after his fine start to the season.

The criticism will gather pace I fear, not for playing Deco this time, but by continually playing Florent Malouda.

Malouda gave nothing to the game yesterday, except for the 1st minute effort. After that he just sauntered round the pitch. He didn't track back, he didn't tackle and when he got the ball, he either misplaced his passes or was tackled easily.

I have already said on numerous occasions that Malouda is too lighthweight and if Scolari had seen the error of his ways early, then Stochie boy would have terrorised Ipswich with his pace and tremendous skill.

Eventually Malouda was taken off and Didier came on. Still no Miroslav!!

Chelsea regained the lead from a wonderful Michael Ballack free-kick after Anelka was brought down. Ballack curled the ball up and over the wall into the net to Richard Wright's right-hand side.

Five minutes from time, Super Frank stepped up and lashed a spectacular free-kick into the same corner, from 35 yards or so.

Chelsea: Cech, Bosingwa, Alex, Carvalho (Ivanovic 69), A Cole, Ballack (Deco 79), Belletti, Lampard (c), Kalou, Anelka, Malouda (Drogba 57).

Goals: Ballack 15, 58, Lampard 84

Ipswich Town: R Wright, Bruce, McAuley (c), Balkestein, D Wright, Haynes (Lisbie 58), Miller (Quinn 81), Garvan, Norris, Walters (Stead 70), Counago.

Booked: Bruce 18, McAuley 55, Miller 84

Goal: Bruce 32

Good result.

Two great free-kicks - Lampard´s was an absolute screamer.

Looking at the curse of the set-pieces; I got the feeling that in this case Carvalho was unlucky that his clearance richoshaded (sp?) back off Alex (or maybe he didn´t get a call from Cech?).

Boro the next test....and then of course Liverpool away.
