By We Are Gonna Win the Cup

Tomorrow is Carling Cup Final day - Chelsea v Liverpool.
This final will be Chelsea's fourth appearance and for Liverpool it is number ten. Chelsea have won two finals and Liverpool have won seven. So statistically Liverpool should be favourites.
The bookies have Chelsea at odds on and the whole country apart from Chelsea fans want a Liverpool victory. Why not indeed? After all everybody loves to see a team doing well get beat. Chelsea's first League Cup success came in 1965 when the final was played over two legs. Chelsea beat Leicester City 3-2 on aggregate. The main highlight of the two legs was Eddie McCreadie, Chelsea's left back, running a full eighty yards before joyfully planting the ball in the back of the net. Chelsea's next League Cup final appearance was in 1972 and was played at Wembley against Stoke City. The final was renamed by the media as the 'George Eastham Final' after the former at some ripe old age of 39 scored the winner in defeating Chelsea 2-1. The result was considered a shock as Chelsea in the previous two seasons had won the FA Cup and the now defunct European Cup Winners Cup and notwithstanding Stoke City was a Division Two team. In 1998 Chelsea's second triumph in the competition again at Wembley, came against Middlesbrough with the Blues winning the Final 2-0 after extra-time. The goals were scored by Frank Sinclair, now at Burnley and Robbie Di Matteo. Di Matteo if you remember scored the fastest ever FA Cup final goal the previous year also against Middlesbrough. Di Matteo unfortunately had his career ruined after a horror injury whilst playing for Chelsea in the UEFA Cup against St Gallen. Because of the reconstruction work going on at Wembley, tomorrow's final is being held at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. But what do you know about Cardiff? Famous Cardiff folk: Charlotte Church, Craig Bellamy, Tom Jones, Colin Jackson, Sian Lloyd TV Weather presenter. Cardiff History: AD43 Romans Invade, naming the place 'Fort of Didius' AD400 Romans quietly leave. Enter the Vikings who hang about for a bit until twenty years after the Battle of Hastings (1066) when the Normans get in on the act down Wales way. Vikings bow out. 1091 Robert Fitzhamon begins work on Cardiff Castle, creating a small settlement. 1404 Owain Glyndwr destroys Cardiff and therefore becoming an instant hero. Something to do with the Welsh hating the English. (Nothing has changed there then!) Then came the Elizabethans. Cardiff became a lawless, pirate-infested port and remains a sleepy backwater of 1,500 people straggling around the decaying castle for a few hundred years. In the 1790s because of the Industrial Revolution, with its canals, docks, trade and of course money, Cardiff hits the big time. 1905 the year Chelsea was formed, Cardiff became a city and in 1955 the year Chelsea won their only league title, Cardiff became the capital of Wales. How coincidental!!! Are the Gods going to be kind to the Blues (especially after the week that has gone before???) In 1857, General Tom Thumb (the smallest man ever to live, at 31 inches and weighing 25lb) visited Cardiff's Town Hall. It cost sixpence to see him. If you are driving. The stadium is easy to locate. It might have something to do with the fact that there are lots of huge flashing signs along the M4 MILLENNIUM STADIUM - THIS WAY!!! Don't forget to take some extra cash to cross the Severn Bridge. Cars are £4.60, vans £9.30 and coaches £13.90. Charges only apply to get into Wales. They don't charge you to leave. WOW!! How did Liverpool get to the FInal. Well both Chelsea and Liverpool did not start playing in the competition until the third round, because of Champions League commitments. Liverpool beat Millwall 3-0, Middlesbrough 2-0, Spurs 4-3 after penalties when the game ended 1-1 and in the semi-final overcame Chelsea Old Boy Ray Lewington's Watford 2-0 on aggregate. Chelsea beat West Ham 1-0, Newcastle Utd 2-0 after extra time, Fulham 2-1 and Man Utd 2-1 on aggregate in the semi final after the first leg ended 0-0. Incidentally Damien Duff scoring the winner at Old Trafford with five minutes to go. Chelsea and Liverpool have faced each other twice this season. Both games ending in 1-0 victories to Chelsea, with both goals scored by Joe Cole after coming on as a substitute in both games. In previous finals, Liverpool have scored a total of fourteen goals and conceded eight. Chelsea have scored six and conceded four. This season' s competition sees that Baros, Gerrard and Mellor have scored two goals each for Liverpool and Duff and Lampard have scored two each for Chelsea. COME ON CHELSEA!!
