Premiership new boys Burnley visit Hartlepool in the second round of the Carling Cup in the middle of a run of fixtures which can probably be classified as the toughest in the Lancashire club’s recent history. Under boss Owen Coyle they know they are facing a difficult season in the top grade, but August is going to be a real test for them.
They play Pools on a date yet to be fixed in week beginning August 24, after a Sunday home game against Everton. That Premiership match comes just four days after playing champions Manchester United at Turf Moor.
And to complete a busy first month in the Premiership Burnley go to Chelsea on Saturday August 29. So perhaps they won’t be regarding the trip to the Vic as their most difficult test of the month. The chances are that they will play an under-strength team, even against a Pools side that sent Premiership West Brom and Stoke tumbling from cup competitions last season. It looks like being another great chance of a giant-killing.
Capacity only about 7,000 ... just under 1,000 for away fans.
But I bet it's going to be on the telly - it's bound to be on Wed, with Burnley having a Sunday game the weekend before.
I couldn't say for sure but I doubt Owen Coyle will play an understrength side. He'll want to win the cup not get knocked out. Hartlepool represent a very tricky tie for us and if we take it lightly we'll get knocked out.
