Charisteas started his professional career at Aris Thessaloniki where he scored 19 goals in 87 appearances, he had a brief loan spell at Athinaikos where he scored 1 goal in 7 games, he moved to Germany in 2002 where he won the Bundesliga and the German Cup with Werder Bremen but he was never a regular in the Bremen side but still managed to score 18 goals in 66 appearances ahead of his move to Dutch giants Ajax in January 2005 for a fee reported to be around £3.5 million, despite a good start to his Ajax career he soon found himself down the pecking order after 18 months at Ajax he had scored 12 goals in 31 games before moving to Feyenoord in August 2006, after just one season at De Kuip he joined Bundesliga side FC Nuremberg but his goals have not stopped them being relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga and because of his high wages it is reported that Nuremberg want to off-load him.
Since before his move to Ajax Charisteas has been keen on playing in England, he cost Nuremberg around €2.5 million and its being reported Town are willing to spend £2.5 million to bring the 6ft 4in 28-year-old striker to Portman Road.
