Serge Mafoko's signing and contribution to Grimsby Town's season has been berated by John Fenty, Grimsby's chairman. Mafoko has been on trial at Lincoln over the last month or so and has impressed in his appearances for the now defunct reserves side, scoring a brilliant individual goal in one game recently.
Mafoko joined Grimsby from Kettering last summer and was given a three year contract, something that is rarely heard of these days in the lower leagues. However, John Fenty has publicly blasted Mafoko and fellow summer signings Rob Duffy and Charles Ademeno, singling the three out after a season of midtable mediocrity in the Blue Square Premier.
Serge has been on trial at Sincil Bank recently and has impressed, potentially earning himself a full time contract, that despite City's relegation to the Blue Square Premier.
Speaking to the Grimsby Telegraph, Fenty said "Looking back in hindsight, the signing of Serge on a three-year deal was a disaster. It comes down to homework and we got it wrong. When you look back, we paid fees for Serge, Rob Duffy and Charles Ademeno. It's not really worked out."
Serge was signed by previous manager Neil Woods, the manager who relegated Grimsby and failed to mount any sort of promotion challenge in the Blue Square Premier, a fact that saw him eventually sacked by Fenty. They have since appointed Rob Scott and Paul Hurst as manager.
Grimsby are being tipped as one of the teams likely to challenge for the Playoffs next season, that despite winning just two of their last twelve games.
