The on loan Fulham man was one of the least mentioned players during the 2009/10 season. His two loan spells were both successful but he rarely got mentioned in either the newspapers or message boards, but he did score one hell of a goal against Hereford.

I've seen some excellent goals down the years. There's the 40 yard Butcher goal at Mansfield in 2003, there's the 45 yard Keates free kick at Bury in 2005, but neither had the pure skill and technique involved in the Matt Saunders goal against Hereford United.

It was just one of those goals that was in as soon as it left the player's boot. It was just unbelieveable. I personally thought it was going miles over but the last minute dip on it was absolutely amazing. It was at that moment I was convinced this guy had a future in football.

Saunders was probably the most under-rated member of the squad during 2009/10. His two loan spells both saw impressive displays, but it was strange to see that virtually no-one was talking about him. He just got on with his job as Chris Herd and Davide Somma stood in the spotlight.

I would love to keep Saunders for next season, but I genuinely think that he has a future at at least Championship level, and on a technical ability basis, was one of the better players we had during 2009/10.

I agree Nathan, but I hear he is homesick.

Could be one of those bits of trivia when he is a superstar, that he once played for us (Sm100)
