Nathan Baker joined the Imps on loan from Aston Villa early in October and went on to form a half decent partnership with Adam Watts, although I think that was more down to Watts than Baker. Hailed as the next "John Terry" Baker proved very injury prone and only played 18 games in an Imps shirt.

When I heard we had signed what many people at Aston Villa consider to be the best young defender in the country, I was quite excited. I am less convinced after seeing him for nearly a whole season that he's the best young defender in the country when he struggled to even keep the ball in play in League Two.

The ball would fall to him and he would look up the pitch and just aimlessly boot it anywhere, even if there were no attackers anywhere near him. It was just so incredibly frustrating to watch and as harsh as it may sound, I personally think that our better performances came when he wasn't in the side.

He did show signs of promise in his final few appearances for City, but if this is the best young defender in the country then I'm a bit worried. Don't get me wrong, I have seen FAR, FAR worse defenders at this club, but in my opinion he was an inferior defender to Adam Watts.

Also, nothing to do with Baker's performances but during February I went to a concert in Birmingham but had time to kill, so went on a guided tour around Villa Park. I got talking to a lot of their fans and none of them even knew Baker was on loan to us.....nearly five months after he had joined us.
