In what was the longest trip of the season for Lincoln, the loyal group of fans were certainly rewarded for their efforts with City's second haul of three goals in the space of eight days. Although still dodgy at the back, it was the brilliance of Somma up front that saw the Imps pick up the points, although some late, late Burch saves saved the day.
City got off to an excellent start with a seventh minute corner falling to Somma in the area and he wasted no time in hitting his fourth goals in five games. He had infact come close to open the scoring a few minutes earlier when his long range free kick was barely held by Bevan in the home goal.
Hughton headed wide from an Anderson header a few minutes later. Bevan claimed at the feet of Hone as City threatened to run riot against a Torquay side who could barely put two passes together. Benyon was soon booked for mouthing off to the referee and could have easily been sent off for a rash tackle a few minutes later.
Then against the run of play, Torquay gained an unlikely equaliser as Kerr mistakenly gave the ball to Carayol. He confidently ran forward and played the ball to Nicky Wroe and he put it past Burch to make it 1-1. It could have been 2-1 to the hosts within two minutes as Carayol jinked in between four City players before sending a weak effort at Burch just before half time.
The second half started slowly with only a Hughton headed wide from a corner but it wasn't long before he was the main beneficiary of yet more excellent work from Somma. The Leeds man picked up the ball about 30 yards out and ran in between several defenders before Hughton picked up the ball and smashed it home to give City a lead that their overall play of the game so far had deserved.
A mighty goal-scramble almost saw Torquay equalise but Burch saved well at the feet of Benyon and City made it 3-1 from the resulting goalkick. Burch booted it upfield and a defender slipped, leaving Somma to round the goalkeeper and slot into the goal to make it 3-1 and make him the club's joint top goalscorer of the season, not bad for a month's work.
Smith was booked for Torquay due to a foul on Hughton before Rendell's goalbound header was cleared off of the line by Green. Yet more poor defending saw a low cross somehow reach Zebrowski and he calmly placed it beyond Burch to make it 3-2. The remainder of the game was dominated by Torquay but some fabulous goalkeeping from Burch meant the victory went to the Imps.
