Midfielder : Shane Clarke

Shane Clarke is a rarity in the Imps squad these days, a former youth player making regular appearances. Although he'll never be a world-class player by any stretch of the imagination, Clarke is one of those footballers that gets all the basics right.

Shane Clarke joined the Imps as a youngster and progressed through the youth system, eventually becoming the captain of the reserves and winning the ShaneClarke1Pontins Holiday League Cup, beating Hartlepool United in the final after beating sides such as Blackburn Rovers on the way.

When Peter Jackson was appointed manager, he vowed to bring youth into the side and Shane Clarke made his first team debut against Rochdale in January 2008, he was sent off a week later against Rotherham. He continued to make appearances throughout the season and even forced his way into the first team starting line up for a time.

However, he wasn't overly popular with fans as he did the basics and nothing more, fans grew frustrated at his making simple side passes when through-balls were on that could have produced a goal.

Clarke has never been a player who would be capable of playing a lot of games during the season, and is similar in many ways to Matt Bloomer, doing the basics but inevitably nothing more than a squad player making 20 or so appearances (mainly from the bench) a season.

I like Clarke, a good player to have in a squad, gives an option if we need to protect a lead.
