Imps won't spend big in January

Despite being in desperate need of players that are actually half decent, it has been revealed in the Echo today that City won't spend big to try and avoid relegation to the Blue Square Premier, although the Imps have been heavy linked with Norwich's Jamie Cureton.
Bob Dorrian revealed in the Echo today that although there is money available, that City fans shouldn't expect Sutton to be able to spend a lot in January, possibly only being able to bring in one or two players.
"There is not £100,000 available to buy a player. Effectively we would have to go to the bank to borrow the money if that was the case," said Dorrian. "It's a big, big risk. As things stand, fans are getting quite concerned but we are pretty confident that we will work our way out of the situation we are in."
City's top goalscorer remains Rene Howe, who left the Imps a few weeks ago after his loan spell was cut short. Other than that, it's been lean pickings for the Imps frontline. Jamie Clarke has only managed one League goal, Chris Fagan hasn't scored a League goal since September 12th, Delroy Facey hasn't scored and Paul Connor has been injured near enough all season.
Norwich's Jamie Cureton has been mentioned as a possible solution to the problem. He has been out of favour at Carrow Road and has been reportedly training with the Imps, although it isn't the first time that has happened in recent years.
The one thing that is for definite is that we need someone up front who can stick away chances, mainly because the last time a striker that's at the club currently scored from open play in the League was the aforementioned Fagan effort on September 12th.

Is anyone really surprised at this. i lost faith in the board a long time ago. they have placed all their faith in an inexperienced manager and will not it seems under any circumstances invest in the team and give him some help. I really want Sutton to get it right but working for this mob his hands are definately tied. They say they are confident we can get out of the mire but it seems to me the only posative thing they will be doing will be keeping their fingers crossed. No doubt they will be in the echo in a few weeks asking for support when the attendances are still dropping. For the sake of every fellow Imp who stands in the freezing cold every week come what may I hope I am wrong but the current board in my opinion are a bigger threat to this club than any I have known. All I hope is Sutton and the players find something from some where to get us out of this mess, Up the Imps
No-one said they wouldn't invest in the team, just that we wouldn't be spending £100,000 on one player.
Like Dorrian said we could have easily spent £150,000 on Howe!
The last thing you want when negotiating for any player is for the club to be advertising the fact you have money to spend.
If City do bring in 2 players and one of them turns out to be Cureton I'll be pleased.

I'd be quite pleased with Cureton. He's scored consistently at levels above this throughout his career.

that ok bringing in Cureton but if he doesnt get the service where will the goals come from. i would also like to know if the board take a share out of the money the club has and if so what % do they take.
The board need to go, and as I have stated before what Qualifies. Dorrian and Wright to run a FL club.
If the board cannot see that we are screaming out for a bit of quality at the top end of the pitch then they are in the wrong Job in my opinion. This is the worst City Squad, possibly, in History and the board are saying we won't be spending big. Well with people like this in charge I for one won't be attending matches until they either show some ambition or go.
On current form I would suggest we are the 2nd worst team in the FL, yet Dorrian thinks we will survive, based on what Bob, your astute appointments of Sutton, Peaarce and Lindsey.
Then he states supporters quote Lefondre who scored 2 against us, what about the other x amount he has banged in in l2.
But best of all I constantly read on other boards about signing on fees, wages, Transfer fee's etc etc and we don't know the ins and outs about the club so lets wait ans see?? But Aren't we a community club?.

2. I cannot emphasise enough the importance of a cup run, we do not budget for it at all and anything made will go into the Managers budget for January... " lots of Gate reciepts, TV revenue and away at a PL club on a Saturday, what more can you ask for??

In my opinion spending money on transfers is not the way to build a team, it's paying the right wages that gets better players.
I think Wright and Dorrion would gladly stand down if there were others with more money to invest banging on the door. But there isn't!
To your first post Skeggyimp, that isn't the case if players are in contract or under a ceratin age.. And usually better players are in contract, unless of course your Lincoln and let contracts run down to save money and then end up with tremendous assets going for free, I can't be arsed to quote them but there are many - So that does slightly make your point a tad weaker.
As for the second point you make there have been people willing to invest in Lincoln before and again I am not going into that either so that also slightly damages your assumption that Wright and Co will accept cash.
I do however like the way you only ever pick a point or 2 out of my posts.

If you mean Trew and Roe, if their offer/plc business plan had been accepted, I'm quite confident, given the subsequent economic climate, that this club would not now exist.
I'm now worried about the constant mixed messages coming from the board, but reading the source article, it has been cherry-picked for worst interpetation by the Echo. As several posts have pointed out, its wages which will attract the players.
Does Sutton have the contacts and negotiating skills to attract the right ones within his budget and needs. I'll tell you at the end of January, there is no other game in town. Results so far are better than Graham Taylor's first few weeks.

Unlike you I just don't know the ins and outs of how the club operate so I just comment on the things I know about.

I am not too sure that the PLC would not have worked out,we will never know but when they were running things didn't they try to get Parkin in?
It would have depended on alot of factors but we can't say for sure that we would not have had a club left.
If it were not for the transfer monies our debt would not have been 63k but around 600k.
I can't understand for the life of me why the Trust have not stepped up to the mark and raised some funds,this is not Trust bashing it just my opinion.
We have just bought some shares in the club and hopefully more will follow.

We would have more scope to spend some money on quality if the squad size was smaller.Ideally I'd like 2-3 quality players and let about 7-8 go.Easier said than done because of contractual obligations,but you could start with some of the loan players that are underperforming.
Of course there is a risk that spending £k 75- £k 100 on a quality player will not work out-nothing can be guaranteed in football.But you ask to ask yourself where is the current masterplan taking us.
Attracting new investment gives you more leeway to acheive the above.Increased efforts need to be made to do this rather than worrying that the Trust 25% shareholding will fall as a consequence.

Like you Harry I worry about where the present policy is taking us but I do believe that to spend too much now would leave us very vulnerable to problems in the future.
I want to see us succeed but when it happens I want to see us able to stay at that level and not just fall back because of money problems.
The future has to be building a team and not buying one, but how ling will fans wait?
