Top 20 Players : 8th - Rob Burch

By Nathan Jackson
December 12 2009

Lincoln City's current goalkeeper has made it into the Top 20 Players of the 2000-2010 period. He is the highest ranked current player at Sincil Bank and has recently been linked with moves to Premier teams such as Everton and Burnley, so chances are he won't be an Imp much longer.

Many say that Burch is the best signing that Peter Jackson made, getting the goalkeeper to join the Imps despite rumours of interest from teams from the Championship. Burch automatically had to win over some fans who weren't RobBurch1happy with Jackson getting rid of Alan Marriott, a tough task given that Marriott was the only player to have played in every single one of Lincoln City's Playoff games.

The first signs that Burch was an excellent addition came in a League Cup match at Derby County. A keenly contested game between the Imps and Derby had seen Ben Wright give the Imps a lead and Burch had produced many excellent saves throughout the match before eventually being beaten 3 times from 3 excellent strikes by Nathan Ellington.

Burch would continue to impress for most of the season but then January 2009 came and Burch's only weakness came into view. Rochdale and Accrington had already scored long range goals against Burch, neither of which he could have done anything about. Then came Chester and Bournemouth, both of whom scored from 35 yards out. Position was an issue for Burch, but he has worked on that and hasn't conceded a long range goal (anything around 30 yards or more) since that game against Bournemouth.

He saw out the season and under the coaching eyes of the experienced Paul Musselwhite, Burch went from strength to strength and found himself being linked with teams such as Everton, Burnley and Doncaster Rovers, however, at the end of the 2009/10 season he would go to Notts County following a spell of 25 games without keeping a clean sheet.
