Crewe Alexandra hold the unenviable title of being the last team that City beat in any form of knock out competition, a 5-1 win in 2005 and Crewe have been a club on the slide ever since, joining League Two after an horrendous run of form took them into the drop zone in the final two weeks last year. For most of the back-end of last season it appeared that Crewe were safe. They had started the season badly and were bottom for quite some time but some fine form from January onwards saw Crewe pull away from the drop  zone and more importantly, they were beating teams around them at the bottom of the table and safety appeared in the bag, but a win against Colchester on March 14^th was the last time they picked up three points.

After that win they were 5 points clear of the drop-zone with ten to play, obviously not a safe gap but one that could have kept them safe with one or two more wins. Goals dried up pretty quickly, and so did goals. With two games to go they were suddenly in a dangerous position. The gap to the drop zone was now down to a point and every single team below them had games in hand. A 4-3 defeat at Stockport left them in the drop zone, but results during the following week meant that they had to beat Leicester, the newly crowned League One Champions, and hope that results went their way.  A 3-0 defeat later meant that Crewe were back in the fourth tier after a lengthy absence.

Gudjon Thordarson currently sits in the hot-seat at Gresty Road and much like the last team he managed at this level, he has lost more games in charge than he has won. His record as Crewe manager currently stands at 8 wins, 7 draws and 10 defeats from his 25 games in charge and he has a record of falling out with some of Crewe's better players. He allowed Michael O'Connor and Anthony Elding to join City on loan last season and both heavily criticised Thordarson. Elding returned to Crewe and appears to want to fight for his first team place, whereas O'Connor left for Scunthorpe United for a total of £250,000.

10 players have left Gresty Road in the summer and out of the ones that weren't released, only two left for a team that aren't in a division higher than Crewe, a worrying sign that Crewe have potentially got rid of a lot of decent players. However, they have replaced them with Mat Mitchcell-King and Patrick Ada, both joining from Histon.

Their start to the season could be vital as they face a varied mixture of teams, ranging from those who will be challenging for promotion to those right at the other end and this could be vital in defining their season.

Looking at their squad they certainly don't have one of the best squads in the division, it's alright but it's not fantastic and I don't think it's one capable of challenging for promotion for at least another season. Infact, I think that they can only really push on when they get rid of Thordarson as he appears to upset a lot of players and his record suggests that he won't be much good at this level.

i think they could push playoffs, i think elding will have a really good season for them aswell.
