Chester City's Deva Stadium

By Kate Jackson

The Saunders Honda Stadium is one of those grounds that I really don't enjoy visiting at all. It's not a nice ground, is in the middle of nowhere, and has a farm right next to it which isn't nice to say the least when farming's actually taking place.

Please note that this review is based on my experiences whilst visiting the ground when the club were known as Chester City. I have yet to visit it since they have reformed as Chester FC.

Having never visited Chester before, I was quite excited about this personally, although I was a little sceptical because of noticing Chester's ground on the TV and various football websites, the ground is very small and I thought the view wasn't going to be very good. Anyway, on our way through Chester, after passing Stoke's Brittania Stadium on the way, we all of a sudden started noticing thousands upon thousands of chavs. So welcome to Chavster, like Chester but only chavier.

THE APC OVERNIGHT STAND - THE AWAY END.....SOMETIMES

THIS STAND IS NOW AN ALL SEATED STAND

Chester 1

Anyway, we were still curious as to where the ground was as no-one could see any floodlights after quite a while of travelling quite far within Chester. Out of nowhere, we were there and as with Bristol Rovers and Wycombe, it was in the middle of nowhere. All that was around was the ground, nothing else for hundreds of metres except the Welsh border half way down the stadium.

I drove there for our final visit and got there a bit earlier than I had anticipated and therefore decided to have a look around to see what there actually was around the ground......warehouses and factories.....lots of them. In terms of grounds with activites to do around them, Chester is pretty far down there on the list.

There's a ridiculously small club shop that sells nothing of major interest and as far as I recall, there's not a bar at the ground that could venture into, although I could easily be incorrect in that request.

LIVERSEDGE WEST STAND

This stand was used as the away end during our last visit, with the left hand side of the picture below being for away fans.

Chester 2

The away terrace was quite small, although it was slightly bigger than I had anticipated but it still didn't produce an awe-inspiring view of the action. Standing on the top of the terrace only barely brought your head above the crossbar....obviously depending on your height, and the view of the other end was extremely limited as the pitch was quite large. This stand later became all seated and because you were forced to sit down, it had an even worse view of the action that the terrace had.

The other away end was a small seated section of the stand to the left, the Liversedge Stand. This stand was quite small and couldn't have been more than 8/9 rows high, however, because you're at the side of the pitch it did offer a good view of the pitch and the ground didn't seem as big from this stand.

The opposite stand was pretty much exactly the same, although a bit taller and not too disimilar to the main stand at Kidderminster. The final stand was a terrace behind the far goal.

VAUGHN EAST STAND

Chester 3

Chester fans seemed to lack passion, although they seemed quite friendly. Only the brief chant after they had scored broke an otherwise perfectly silent crowd and this, combined with the general lack of quality of the ground, made this quite a boring day out on the four occasions I was "fortunate" enough to visit.

There is also a farm nearby that, on several visits, has produce a rare rancid sink of cow dung that has spread across into the ground. So a shite ground with the smell at shite, hardly a great day out.

I would go as far as saying this was one of my least favourite grounds to visit.
