The game started pretty slowly with both sides looking to set aside the embarrasement of being eliminated in the first round of the FA Cup by non-League sides. It didn't stay quiet for long when a long ball from the defence went well wide of the intended Walker, the former Northampton striker then chased it and appeared to swing an arm at the ever improving Danny Hone. Referee Scott had no hesitation and he sent off the Shrewsbury striker, the second time in seven days City have played against 10 men.
McIntyre headed wide, denying Graham Coughlan a near certain goal before a Stefan Oakes free kick went straight into the arms of Matt Gilks, the goalkeeper making his debut on loan from Blackpool. Danny Hone was certainly getting a battering, suffering a gashed leg from Humphrey and then a tussle with Holt. Humphrey took time out from battering Hone and he chipped Burch, only to see the Imps goalkeeper palm it over.
Frecklington shot wide for City before Oakes tried to score in what would turn into a near one-man crusade for scoring outside the box. Beevers' brilliant interception denied Holt a free run on goal before N'Guessan cut inside and fired wide from about 20 yards.
Scott Kerr, a man who can rarely be accused of troubling the score board, forced Gilks into a low save before Burch had to be on his toes to keep out a deflected free kick. Neither side managed a decent scoring opportunity before the half time interval and the Imps were holding their lofty opponents.
Oakes yet again tried his luck from distance before Humphrey had an effort deflected. Janos Kovacs' surge into the box failed to pay off when his header was cleared before Oakes' umpteenth long ranger was easily held by Gilks. Leslie and White replaced Murray and Humphrey for the visitors, surprising given the latter had been impressive.
It wasn't long before the Imps were making their own subs when Ben Wright and David Graham replaced Aaron Brown and the ever-sloppy John-Lewis. Frecklington almost pounced followung good work from Kerr and Graham before the Scot somehow missed twice from five yards in a matter of seconds.
Wright missed two golden opportunities before Frecklington fired wide. City couldn't find that elusive opener and the game ended 0-0.
