If someone had offered me a point before the game at Brentford then I would have taken it before the game, but I am deeply disappointed to only leave with a point. Despite a Brentford fan's claims outside the ground, there was only team going for the draw after we had equalised and it wasn't us. Brentford may have had more shots than us but we had the better chances, including missing one or two open goals.
That's where my main gripe is to be honest, even though Patulea is launching a one-man mission to score goals for is, the other strikers simply aren't performing. Granted, a 4-5-1 formation was never going to be likely to produce many goals, but we could have easily had three or four on any other day.
I also recently mentioned that we have these long spells of passing the ball without actually going anywhere. This time that move came on the edge of the Brentford box. There was a 15-pass spell where City were in a shooting chance on three or four occasions but the players instead passed the ball. We'll never get anywhere if we constantly take this attitude. What's the point of your team-mates working you into a goalscoring position if you're not even going to shoot?
However, this isn't going to be a completely negative reaction, infact, this is the first that I've been able to write for a while which has more positives than negatives. Let's start with the obvious that a draw is better than a defeat, we're on a mini run of one defeat in four and we've got a lot of winnable League games coming up in the next few weeks, especially Saturday's home game against Morecambe, one point and place above us. If we win that then we will start moving up the table (well, at least one place anyway) and that will start inspiring confidence.
In terms of actual players, only LJL had a bad game, everyone else did a fairly decent job for the majority of the game. The stand out man had to be Adrian Patulea, capping off a great performance with a goal. He has the energy of Kevin Gall but most importantly, has the ability to score a goal, something that his play-a-like doesn't. Much like I predicted when he signed, Patulea is having the same impact that Gary (Taylor) Fletcher did when he joined from Leyton Orient in 2003.
No other player particularly stood out, although Rob Burch did palm the ball off successful several times with striker's lurking behind him, but whether he can play again for a while is another matter and it seems almost strange that Ayden Duffy could play the next two League games, bringing his total up to seven League games for City and only four different opponents played.
THEIMPS.TK UNOFFICIAL PLAYER RATINGS FOR THE GAME AGAINST BRENTFORD | ||
PLAYER | RATING | COMMENTS |
1 - ROB BURCH | 7 | Couldn't do anything at all about the goal, made some good claims from corners before being forced off injured. |
2 - PAUL GREEN | 6 | Yet another coming from Paul Green's side of the defence, could have been worse but he is out of position quite a lot. |
4 - JANOS KOVACS | 6 | How he didn't get sent off is anyone's guess. He loves his little bicycle-kick but there's no messing his defending, hoof, hoof and then a bit more hoofing just to make absolutely sure. |
5 - LEE BEEVERS | 6 | No real complaints about Beevers. He seems strangely at home in the left back position considering he's right footed. |
6 - FRANK SINCLAIR | 6 | Almost gifted Brentford a goal within the first minute, but he was pretty solid after that |
8 - LEE FRECKLINGTON | 6 | Unspectacular but did show signs every now and then of his old self. |
11 - SCOTT KERR | 6 | Much like Freck, he was a bit unspectacular to be honest. Did his job which is all you can ask of a captain, but other than that was largely anonymous. |
12 - DANY N'GUESSAN | 6 | Dany put some dangerous balls into the box but should have done far better with his last minute one-on-one, oh well, at least it was better than his performance against Bury. |
13 - AYDEN DUFFY | 5 | He didn't really have a save to make, although he was lucky not to concede when a Brentford shot was cleared off the line. |
14 - LENELL JOHN-LEWIS | 3 | Quite possibly his worst performance in a City shirt. Didn't look even slightly dangerous and other than a random flick on to create the goal, he contributed nothing towards the game. |
15 - BEN WRIGHT | 5 | Only on the pitch for about 8 minutes overall but he still managed not to win headers against defenders about 3 inches shorter than him. |
16 - DANIEL HONE | 7 | Came on as a substitute and showed exactly what we've been missing, a relaxed head at the back. He surely is due a start? |
23 - ADRIAN PATULEA | 8 - MOTM | Excellent finish for the goal and his commitment levels are still fantastic. |
