It wasn't until Patulea came on that we actually looked like we would score. Up until that and I don't think we had a meaningful and/or realistic shot on target. It makes you wonder if we would have actually managed to score yesterday if Bury hadn't scored the own goal. It's becoming a very worrying trend that we need to stop. There hasn't been one game so far where you can say that we looked like we were capable of scoring a hatful.
The problem is that we've been the dominant force in the majority of our games and yet we've very rarely looked like scoring. It all started with Rotherham, we could have easily scored 5/6 that day if we had just had a bit more lucky. Even against Barnet we were poor going forward. That was a game we truly dominated and yet we only scored twice.
Another concern of mine is that Jacko doesn't react very quickly. He waited until we were 3-1 down on Saturday before he even contemplated making substitutions, again that is becoming a very common trend. The exact same thing happened against Dagenham, dominating the game, concede three quickfire goals and only then do the subs start warming up. If you're going to make substitutions, at least make them when they are going to potentially change the game, there's no point making substitutions with five/six minutes to go when we've already lost the game.
However, my main concern is the lack of a solid defence. I find it no coincidence that the only team who have failed to score against us are the only side who didn't have any shots. Dagenham scored against us and they were god awful, Grimsby were dross and now we have Bury. Bury's three goals came from identical situations and it just shows that this defence doesn't learn from it's mistakes. The first two goals were both played into the back post, neither time was it dealt with and then Ben Wright gives away a penalty for shirt pulling just seconds after he was warned against it by the referee.
Jackson has been in charge at Sincil Bank for nearly a year now and he has yet to sort out the problems that brought to an end his predecessor's reign. We still look extremely vulnerable and if we can't defend simply corners, then we are screwed, pure and simple. We can't afford to relax just because Luton and Bournemouth are still miles behind. Luton have picked up 10 points so far, a record that would see them around the edge of the Playoffs, if they keep that form up then it won't be long before they are into a positive points total. If we don't act now then we really will be in a relegation battle.
So, are there actually any positives? I'm struggling to be honest. The aforementioned Patulea looked very keen (as Efe Sodje will be able to tell you) but other than that, there was very, very little else to get excited about. Jackson has hinted about one or two changes to the starting line up next Saturday, but will only one or two be enough against a very good Brentford side?
THEIMPS.TK UNOFFICIAL PLAYER RATINGS FOR THE GAME AGAINST WYCOMBE WANDERERS | ||
PLAYER | RATING | COMMENTS |
1 - ROB BURCH | 3 | Can't recall him actually making a save. He is seriously not strong from corners and not the most vocal keeper that we've had in recent seasons. |
2 - PAUL GREEN | 4 | Part of a defence that conceded three goals from only four shots on target, can't really give anything above four....and even that's being generous. |
4 - JANOS KOVACS | 4 | See Paul Green |
5 - LEE BEEVERS | 4 | See Paul Green |
6 - FRANK SINCLAIR | 4 | See Paul Green |
7 - STEFAN OAKES | 5 | Had a decent free kick saved but didn't really do a lot else. Misplaced a lot of passes and it's arguably his worst performance for the Imps so far. |
8 - LEE FRECKLINGTON | 5 | Uninspiring yet again. If anything his performances are bland. |
9 - KEVIN GALL | 4 | It was about time he was dropped and he showed little in his small cameo appearance that was worthy of giving him his place back against Brentford. |
11 - SCOTT KERR | 6 | It's a bit worrying that Jackson is not taking the team captain off of the pitch on a regular basis. It's not even as if Kerr played badly either, especially clearing a goalbound effort off of the line. |
12 - DANY N'GUESSAN | 4 | It was almost inevitable that N'Guessan would put in a poor performance after an excellent display against Barnet. He was described during the game by a City fan as being a "relevation" since joining City.....someone needs some new glasses. |
14 - LENELL JOHN-LEWIS | 4 | Another player who played well last week but didn't really do a lot against Bury. It wasn't a bad performance from Lenny but he was a bit anonymous. |
15 - BEN WRIGHT | 2 | Actually won a header, did NOTHING else. |
23 - ADRIAN PATULEA | 6 | Came on and seemed to be one of the few that cared. Didn't really do anything but at least showed that he cared. |
