Janos Kovacs is a Hungarian who became one of Peter Jackson's first purchases of the 2008/9 season. The defender signed from Chesterfield after several weeks of the clubs debating over the price and it was eventually agreed he'd move to Sincil Bank for £17,500, although £10,000 also went to his agent.

Janos Kovacs' first impact at Sincil Bank came in the colours of Chesterfield. He was part of the Spirites side that won 4-2 at Sincil Bank in the winter of 2007, scoring Chesterfield's fourth in Peter Jackson's second home game in charge. Skip forward about 8 months and Jackson revealed that he wanted to bring the defender to Sincil Bank.

However, things weren't as easy as they might have sounded. City offered was is believed to be in the region of £10,000 for the Hungarian but Chesterfield wanted an alledged £25,000. A tribunial later and City paid Chesterfield £17,500 and put a 20% sell on clause onto the deal, but Janos was a City player. It was later revealed that Janos' agent had also claimed £10,000 from City.

The whole process was very similar to Jamie McCombe's transfer to City in 2004 and the comparison doesn't end there. He's a similar height to McCombe and his early performances have shown that he is very similar in terms of style of play, but he was nowhere near McCombe's standards.

Kovacs continued as a regular under Peter Jackson but he was dropped extremely quickly after the arrival of Chris Sutton and was allowed to leave for Luton.
