He famously rejected the chance to join Nottingham Forest as a player and he went on to play for Hull City, Walsall, Dunfermline Athletic, Lincoln City, Northampton Town, Instant-Dict, Eastern AA, Hamilton Academical and he ended his long career at Berwick Rangers.
After retirement as a player, McParland did return to Nottingham, taking up a coaching role at Nottingham Forest. He spent 10 seasons as the reserve team coach. However, he did become caretaker manager along with Frank Barlow in the 2005/6 season. The two were a success and pushed Forest from a midtable position to a possible Playoff Push.
The pair oversaw six straight wins towards the end of the season but they would eventually miss out on the Playoffs. McParland and Barlow returned to the coaching staff after Colin Calderwood was appointed manager.
It wasn't long before McParland was made redundant and he was quickly announced as the new manager at Notts County, replacing Steve Thompson. His appointment quickly saw Notts' form seriously starting to falter and they were quickly storming down the table at an alarming rate.
There was a spell during the season where the Notts County fans were saying that there was more chance of the Trent having a Tsunami than there was of Notts County scoring a goal. However, Notts County survived thanks to two wins in their final four games. They were part of just 9 wins achieved by McParland in his 37 games in charge of the Magpies, losing 15 and drawing 13.
His overall record at management has seen him win exactly 34% of his 50 games in charge, drawing 34% and losing 32%.
