Reaction to Ben Wright's 2007/8
By Nathan Jackson May 18 2008
Ben Wright joined the Imps last summer and became our leading goalscorer for the season, not bad considering he didn't play for the first 1/4 of it. 15 goals in 38 appearances is a very respectable figure and he scored on a more regular basis than anyone else during the season.

Ben's first season in the red and white will certainly go down as a success. A goal every 3 shots (rounded up) is an extremely impressive record and it is easily the best shots:goals ratio this club has had in a long time. An average of a goal every 2 games (taking into account the 5 minutes of added on time in each game - 10 minutes overall to make 190 minutes) is a record that no-one in the recent past can match.

Ben's arrival in the side corresponded with the upturn in form. He has played in the vast majority of games since Schofield and Deehan left and his goals won us a vital 6 points this season. However, there have been quite a few occasions where he goals have made no impact on the result except for a bit of restored pride.

My main concern with Ben is that in those games where he hasn't scored, he doesn't actually seem to do a lot. He is very similar to Louis Dodds in that respect, both having long spells where you would barely notice they were on the pitch.

I think that 2008/9 could be a big year for Ben. He could easily surpass the 20 goal mark and will spearhead our push for promotion.

Not sure why you're adding that injury time on - the reason it's there is because it was dead time during the match, ie. time during which noone, not even Ben Wright, could've scored.

Well because the added on time isn't an exact science. There could only be a minute's worth of stoppages and yet 3 minutes are given from somewhere.

Then of course there's the chance that he could score in one of the 5 minutes of added on time. A goal in the 93rd minute is still a goal, that's why I'm using it.

benny wright wright wright!

can be a frustrating player at times, scores ones from tight angles etc but then misses easy sitters.

still a good return in his first year back in football.

There could also be 10 minutes of stoppages with only 3 given as injury time.

And re. your second paragraph, I go back to my original point - if he scores in the 94th minute of 95, he has actually scored in the 89th of the 90 minutes in which it was possible for him to score.

Anyway, guess I'm being pedantic. Good on you for giving us all the stats etc.

I think he's a great striker but a bit weak at times.
next season he will be the real deal.

The lad's done well, but I remain unconvinced which may sound a strange thing to say about our top scorer. Possibly because, as others have pointed out, he doesn't seem to try for the whole game. But he's obviously benefited from a regular place in the team. Make or break for him next season methinks.

I've criticised him during the course of the season, but during the last month he really began to excel. Look at his record though it speaks for itself.

He missed the majority of pre-season last year, so with additonal fitness work I think we could have a real player on our hands here.

A nice lad aswell.

Having heard his end of season interview, he is obviously a good guy, but what did come across is his lack of personal confidence.
Needs to believe more in his own ability.
Ben, we believe in you, believe in yourself.

Far better than Harford & Cunningham were in their first season and look how they progressed? Granted Ben is already in his mid-20's but I for one have seen enough to think he will be a big plus for us next season.

I've said it before but its defence where the quality investement is needed if we are to compete at the right end!
