Pathetic City concede four to relegated Wrexham
By Nathan Jackson May 3 2008
City's final game of the season saw the Imps gain their 24th defeat of the season. We pathetically allowed an already relegated Wrexham side to complete a double against us again. It was the 10th time in the 2007/8 season that City conceded 4 or more goals and it's not a bad thing that most of the starting XI probably won't be here next season.
City kicked off the game but the visitors were the first on the attack when Llewellyn dragged a shot wide. Forrester hit the side netting following a corner but it wasn't long before Wrexham were in the lead. Paul Green, the newly crowned Player of the Year, fouled Marc Williams and Wrexham had an early free kick. It was swung in and Mackin headed past Duffy, who didn't exactly make the best effort to get to the ball.

Ben Wright forced Evans to clear off the line before Baynes was denied a run on goal thanks to a good tackle from Hone. Freck and King both saw efforts clear before the former was injured in the build up to another chance. He was taken off and Shane Clarke replaced him.

Wrexham won a free kick on the half hour when Gary Croft handled a yard from the edge of the box. Baynes stepped up and smashed it under a City wall and Duffy again failed to make an effort to get to the shot. This was greeted by several City fans walking out and many others booing the players.

Wrexham came close on one or two occasions to making it 3-0 before a long ball forward saw Evans try and head back to Ward. However, the header was too powerful and it sailed into the net to give City a rather undeserved goal. It got the home fans singing for the first time in the game.

Croft almost scored his first City goal in what will probably turn out to be his final game in an Imps shirt, his left footed effort going just over the bar. That was the final incident of a frustrating first half for the Imps.

It was almost 3-0 within 35 seconds of the second half when Tremarco found himself one-on-one with Duffy. He lobbed the ball over Duffy, but it was going slightly wide before the Imps defence decided to strangely ignore that it was going out of play and almost place it straight to Baynes in front of goal.

Scott Kerr shot over from the left before Forrester forced Ward into a brilliant save from a free kick. Kerr sent an effort across goal following good work from King and Dodds, unfortunately neither Wright or Forrester could connect with the ball and foce it into the net.

Wright's shot was cleared off of the line before Owain Warlow was brought on for Gary Croft. Fleming also replaced Murtagh for the visitors before Ward saved from Wright. Dodds was replaced by N'Guessan with 15 minutes to go before two Wrexham players went down injured.

Shane Clarke sent a shot straight at Ward following a good pass from King. Clarke fouled Llewellyn on the edge of the box and Baynes scored his second of the game when Duffy's positions made it easy for him.

Wright equalised within 2 minutes when he was put through. He ran forward and sent a powerful shot past Ward and became the top scorer for the season. Beevers headed against the post following a corner before Wright and Forrester both conspired to fail to score from 6 yards out. Wrexham counter attacked from this and Llewellyn chipped over a reactionless Duffy.

There we no other note-worthy incidents in the game.

Duffy questionable for the first 2, but I don't think he could do much about the 3rd from where I was (other end of the pitch at the bottom of the stacey west), he stood up and stayed big, was a good finish by their player I thought.

The third was the free kick. He was stood as far over the left as he could get. He positioned the wall to cover the middle of the goal and Baynes had a really easy task of smashing it in.
