A brief introduction to Morecambe this season
By Nathan Jackson April 23 2008
Morecambe have settled into league life rather quickly this season and even looked like claiming a playoff place for long parts of the season. Sammy McIlory is certainly no stranger to bringing teams into the Football League and consolidating, and in my opinion should win Manager of the Season because he's done a brilliant job at Christie Park this year.

Morecambe have certainly made a good start to Football League life. I must say I am personally very impressed with how well they've done this season and Sammy McIlroy arguably deserves the Manager of the Season more than Ince, Fergie Jr, et al. Being 10th with two games to go is an excellent achievement for a side that had to come from behind to win their playoff final last season.

Morecambe have an average record at home, winning 9 of their 22 games at Christie Park. 7 defeats and 6 draws complete their home record. They've scored 32 and conceded 30 at home. They are on a winless run through having not won in 4 games and only 2 wins in their last 8. Their last win was a 5-1 thrashing of Rotherham at home.

There are often turn-arounds in Morecambe's games. They have conceded the first goal on 23 occasions in their 44 games so far, 4 of those saw them come from behind to win and another 4 were turned into draws. One of those draws came at Sincil Bank when they barely managed a shot on goal, yet they left Lincoln with a point following an own goal from Lee Beevers.

However, they are far from infallible when scoring first. On the 20 occasions when they have scored first, 2 have seen the opponents win and a further 6 have seen the game end as a draw. They have kept 7 clean sheets this season but have failed to score on 13 occasions.

Morecambe have had just two 0-0 scorelines all season. One was against Grimsby in the Johnstone's Paint Northern Final 2nd Leg, the other was at home to Barnet on the very first day of the season. They've scored 5 goals twice so far this season, those coming against Chester and Rotherham.

Only two teams have taken maximum points off of Morecambe so far this season. Wycombe did it with a 1-0 win at Christie Park and a 2-0 win at Adams Park. Accrington were the other side with a 1-0 win at CP before winning the Fraser Eagle game 3-2. MK Dons can also accomplish this feet on the final day of the season. Morecambe have taken maximum points off of Brentford, Chester and Mansfield.

Morecambe's biggest exploits have come in the cups though. They reached the northern final of the JP Trophy. They beat Tranmere, Port Vale, Hartlepool and Bury before being eliminated by Grimsby. They also faced Port Vale in the FA Cup but they went out to two first half goals. Their Carling Cup run took them to round 3. They lost 5-0 at Sheffield United after creditable victories over Preston and Wolves.

The team that represented Morecambe in their last game was Davies, Yates, Bentley, McStay, Adams, Curtis, Stanley, Hunter, Allen, Baker and Blinkhorn.
