Brentford started the game well and Connell forced Duffy to tip the ball out of play. Elder then tried his luck against the young keeper but he also failed to beat Duffy. A City free kick fell to Beevers and the defender sent City's first shot well over the bar. Brown forced an effort wide for the visitors before Simon Brown saved a Dodds effort.
The game went dead for 20 minutes as neither side had a decent chance, although Heywood was booked for the visitors as he fouled Wright. Dodds then awoke the crowd as he linked up with Freck to hit the post. It was a sign of things to come though as the half was coming to an end.
Freck and Dodds linked up again and gave the ball to King on the left. He sent in a ball and it looked as though Simon Brown had easily dealth with it. All of a sudden though and Brown had deflected it into his own net over his head when it looked as though it was almost impossible to do it. It gave the Imps a 1-0 lead and was credited to Gary King, although that is a very generous credit to say the least.
Wright obviously saw Brown's cock-up and tried his own luck from a narrow angle, this effort failed though before Dodds fired wide. Then Brentford scored out of nothing as Elder got in behind the defence and popped it past Duffy to give the Bees a rather undeserved equaliser. The ref blew for half-time soon after.
Shakes replaced Brown at half time for the visitors but it was the Imps who almost scored within a minute of the restart. Dodds sent in a cross and it just managed to miss the head of the onrushing King. Poole broke in behind the Imps defence but Duffy was able to smoother the ball at his feet.
Several injuries later and the Imps had a free kick. Green was booked for trying to take it quickly before then sending it straight at a Brentford defender. A very controversial moment came next though as Jamie Forrester found himself through before being brought to the ground by Heywood. The referee indicated it was outside of the box but still failed to give a red card to Heywood, that despite him being the last man. It made no difference to Forrester though as he stepped up and scored the free kick with a powerful striker.
Brentford were barely looking interested and Freck almost made it 3 as he latched onto a Moses ball. Reid replaced Connell for the visitors before Pembleton was replaced by Clarke and it was 3-1 within about 20 seconds. Green sent a cross into the box and Frecklington had an easy job of heading past Brown, the goalkeeper making no effort to get to it at all.
Forrester was replaced by Stallard before Dodds came on for Warlow. Heywood yet again avoided a red card as he sythed King down.
The Imps held on for a victory.
